More than a million people died of starvation and disease between 1845 and 1850, in what is now increasingly referred to as the Irish Holocaust. With millions destitute and thousands dying each day, the usual burial practices were suspended. The respectful wakes and religious ceremonies were set aside…and the dead were often dumped into mass graves alongside dozens of other nameless victims. During these mass burials there were reports of people being buried alive. Such incidents happened when people collapsed due to hunger or disease. In their weakened state they could appear to be dead. One of the most famous instances involved a boy called Tom Guerin. He was only three years old when he was buried alive in a mass grave in Abbeystrewry near Skibbereen. Watch the video for the full story. Thank you for watching.
