Hey viewers, E36 Fanatic, Steven here

Today I'm still working on replacing my cooling system. Today I'm going to replace my thermostat
0:12
I'm not going to replace the thermostat housing unit. I'm on a time crunch here, but I'm going to replace the thermostat
0:20
You have to remove the thermostat housing unit anyways. Just a note, once you get to this point where you've pulled the radiator off and everything
0:32
this thermostat housing unit, if you've got a plastic one and you've got the time and you've
0:39
already planned this out, go ahead and replace it. It's pretty cheap and I don't trust these
0:44
plastic units. I mean they last a while but the aluminum is much better. It lasts longer and it's
0:52
less likely to crack. So anyways after that, so once you're at this point where you're at the
0:58
thermostat, you've already pulled the fan clutch and everything and the radiator, you can now take
1:04
a look at the thermostat. And there's two bolts on the top holding it in, a 10 millimeter and a 13
1:10
millimeter. And then there's two bolts also holding it underneath. I believe you also have to, you
1:16
don't have to remove this bolt, but you need to loosen it up to loosen this bracket because it
1:22
goes over it keeps the thermostat from pulling it out So I going to go ahead and remove these two top bolts here Okay so like I said this 13 millimeter bolt right here and you had
1:39
this 13 then you have three 10s. One on the top and then two on the bottom that
1:47
are pretty easy to get to. Once you've got that you might have to give it some
1:52
force to get it off. There we go. Got a little coolant leaking out of it. And this is the bracket
2:01
I was talking about that you got to loosen up up here. Once you got this bracket right here
2:07
loosened up, you can wiggle the thermostat out. Then it comes right out. As you can see
2:15
It's in fairly decent condition. I'm gonna keep it just the place that I was
2:24
looking at to get it from couldn't get it for about seven business days and I don't have the time to get a new one so we'll just have to stick to the
2:31
thermostat replacing. But if you were gonna replace that you just put the new
2:35
one in instead of this old one back in. So here's the old thermostat and once
2:41
at this part. You might have to use a screwdriver to go ahead and pull it out
2:49
because sometimes it's really stuck in there. I'll just just fiddle with it a bit
2:57
and it pop out So it took me a minute to kind of get this thermostat but because it pretty it pretty good stuck on there But what I ended up doing is I brought the screwdriver under it like this and just put
3:14
some force on it and it popped out. You can see the old thermostat. It doesn't look too bad actually
3:23
but I'm gonna go ahead and replace it I bought this car about two years ago so I
3:29
had no idea when or who replaced these parts so now I know that it's the parts
3:37
are gonna be brand new so next up is I'm gonna go ahead and put in next up I'm
3:47
gonna go ahead and put in the new thermostat once I'm done cleaning the
3:51
outer area right here and just wiping down the inside in here make sure I have
3:56
a clean surface to to start on and clean this thermostat thermostat housing
4:06
around here then I'll be ready to pop it back in so once you got your new
4:12
thermostat and the course you got a gasket that goes around it you go ahead
4:18
and position it and generally there's a little tab that it's supposed to go up so here's the tab
4:25
and it just goes up from there it's supposed to be facing up so I got a place like that and I've
4:32
cleaned it as best as I can really the thermostat housing mating surface So I going to go ahead and grab my thermostat housing unit and I actually going to put
4:46
a little bit of gasket maker around this gasket. And then I'm going to just put it right back on and put the bolts back in
4:56
And that will be it for that. So you don't want to torque these bolts too much because they are going into plastic of course
5:08
So I mean it's hard plastic but it will still break it
5:21
So I just like to get it torqued a couple of foot-pounds really
5:26
And then, that's about good. That's about done
5:38
So at this point you've got a new thermostat. You got the thermostat housing back on
5:44
Everything's tight. And I've also replaced the water pump if you want to see how to do that
5:51
It's in another video that I'll be posting. If you want to see how to reinstall the rest of these parts, I'll attach another video to see that
