Huawei revamps its smartwatch with the Watch 2 and they've done a nice job of making a comfortable, attractive and functional watch with GPS, biometrics, workouts, notifications and much more. But if you try to use it with an Apple iPhone, will it work? Does Wear OS [formerly Android Wear] work on iOS? Tech expert Dave Taylor of https://www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ checks out the Huawei Watch 2 with his iPhone X and finds there's much to like, though it's not feature-for-feature competitive with an Apple Watch, nor does Wear OS on an iPhone offer all the features of the app on an Android phone... a round SmartWatch for your iPhone let's
0:02
check this Android wear unit out Dave
0:13
Taylor here and I'm looking at
0:14
smartwatches again specifically this
0:16
this is the Huawei watch 2 so this is
0:20
their second generation Android wear
0:22
SmartWatch and this one's pretty nice it
0:25
features built-in GPS and it's designed
0:27
for sports so it is lots of sensors and
0:30
it can do real-time mapping all sorts of
0:32
cool things and it's a SmartWatch now
0:35
I've been comparing it to my Apple watch
0:37
because I work off of my iPhone and
0:40
here's what's really great is that
0:41
Google has upgraded and updated Android
0:45
wear 2.0 for iOS so it really has a lot
0:48
more functionality and it's really
0:51
pretty much a full player so it's just
0:53
about the same functionality as I would
0:55
have on the Apple watch
0:56
welcome back to that though let's talk
0:59
about the watch itself so this features
1:01
a 1.2 inch circular amo LED display with
1:05
a 390 by 390 pixel screen running at 326
1:11
pixels per inch it's bright it's
1:13
colorful looks really cool actually
1:15
and it also is using the Corning Gorilla
1:18
Glass so it's pretty tough it's gonna
1:20
actually last pretty well now inside
1:23
this fairly masculine looking watch if I
1:26
may say so is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 2100
1:30
CPU with 4 gigabytes of flash and a
1:33
modest 768 megabytes of RAM so you know
1:37
the apps that you can run on this are
1:39
gonna need to be written for the watch
1:41
but they would be anyway so that's ok
1:43
yeah
1:43
battery is very nice this is really
1:46
where this rocks compared to the Apple
1:47
watch it's a 420 milliamp hour battery
1:50
which means in just watch mode this will
1:54
run you ready for this three weeks three
1:57
weeks without charging it if you're just
1:58
using it in watch mode that is really
2:00
nice if you're using it on saving mode
2:02
and you're still getting all the
2:03
notifications and everything you'll get
2:05
about two days if you're live GPS
2:08
mapping your run you're gonna get less
2:10
battery life for that that's gonna eat
2:12
up a lot of battery but
2:14
that's how it goes androidwear 2.0 it's
2:17
supporting bluetooth 4.1 obviously ble
2:20
Bluetooth Low Energy and it supports its
2:23
own Wi-Fi connection crazy this thing
2:25
actually connects on Wi-Fi in 802 11 B
2:28
and G and n so if you have AC
2:31
exclusively you shouldn't because your
2:33
router shouldn't work that way but if
2:35
that's how it works then the watch ain't
2:36
gonna work honestly you're never gonna
2:38
see that issue that has a ceramic bezel
2:41
and it's water-resistant it's funny
2:43
actually because the company says it's
2:45
water-resistant and then they warn you
2:47
don't use this in the shower don't get
2:48
it wet if you get it wet dry it off
2:50
immediately so I feel like they're being
2:52
a little coy with their water-resistant
2:55
phrasing so I don't know what the IPX
2:57
rating is I would just be cautious and I
3:00
wouldn't wear it in the shower I
3:01
definitely not where it's swimming or
3:03
surfing although it really looks like
3:04
the kind of watch a surfer would wear if
3:06
you ask me oh well and let's see let's
3:09
talk about some functionality now so
3:12
here I'm going to switch to a couple of
3:13
screenshots that are literally photos I
3:16
took because unfortunately one of the
3:18
few downsides of the Android wear app
3:21
for iOS is it doesn't let you take
3:24
screenshots on the Android version it's
3:26
as simple as tapping and then it'll
3:28
capture whatever is on the actual screen
3:30
super nice not so much for us iPhone
3:33
users so it goes so you're gonna have to
3:36
suffer with my photos so here's the
3:39
first one above call coming in you can
3:41
actually answer a phone call on the
3:43
watch
3:49
you can also use okay Google which is
3:52
nice because that's something that a lot
3:53
of people like and in fact I said that
3:56
and can you see it's actually listening
3:58
to me now cancel my watch is listening
4:02
my phone is listening my Amazon devices
4:05
are listening I am surrounded by things
4:07
that are listening to me except my
4:09
children they're not listening to me
4:11
every parent knows what I'm talking
4:13
about now from a workout perspective
4:15
there's a lot of stuff you can do you
4:17
can do live GPS mapping it has a heart
4:20
rate monitor let's do a quick check and
4:22
see what my heart rate is okay still
4:25
alive that's reassuring
4:26
you can actually download some music and
4:29
listen to it offline if you don't want
4:31
to take your phone with you on a run and
4:32
you get a workout data report unless
4:34
you're on an iPhone in which case that
4:36
version of Android wear doesn't yet
4:38
support downloading data from the watch
4:40
kind of a drag the Android version also
4:44
gives you NFC mobile payments which is
4:46
really nice iOS doesn't let you set that
4:48
up so if you're really desperate for
4:51
that then honestly just like an Apple
4:53
watch really is gonna work better with
4:55
an iPhone then this Huawei watch 2 and
4:58
other Android wear watch is probably
5:01
gonna work better if you have an Android
5:02
phone that's the reality
5:04
I however found it to be really cool I
5:08
really like that it's round and it gives
5:11
me tons of notifications from all the
5:13
different apps I have set up on my
5:14
iPhone and you can see even in the app
5:18
it's easy to switch different watch
5:21
faces here's a list of all the watch
5:23
faces there's even more than this and
5:25
that's one of the things that I really
5:27
feel Apple is falling down on I want
5:28
hundreds of watch faces I want watch
5:31
faces from artists that Apple doesn't
5:33
even like because I like them and Apple
5:36
just doesn't do that that's not part of
5:37
how they look at things with Android
5:39
wear there's much more openness I'd
5:42
still like to see more faces than they
5:44
have here but you know I like that I can
5:46
switch it and make it look different
5:47
because why not I mean it's a screen
5:50
it's not a physical device that's been
5:52
printed and colored and actually built
5:54
to look like just one specific thing so
5:57
there's much I like about this and this
6:00
particular design
6:01
go ahead and put it on my wrist it's
6:03
quite comfortable it's a silicon band
6:06
and you can see the buttons are yellow
6:09
they're strap is yellow so this is the
6:13
sport grey with yellow buttons is the
6:15
particular design and you can get the
6:17
Huawei watch too and a couple of other
6:19
different combinations and designs
6:21
confusingly they're priced differently
6:22
based on your color choices but I'll let
6:25
you look that up however before we get
6:27
to the price go ahead and click on that
6:29
subscribe button because I really
6:31
appreciate when you subscribe oh and I
6:33
just got a notification from Facebook so
6:35
something's happening but focus I'm
6:38
focused on this video don't panic okay
6:41
now only thing left to talk about is the
6:43
price so in sport great this will set
6:46
you back two hundred and forty one
6:48
dollars and ninety nine cents this is
6:49
the Huawei watch 2 and I really like it
6:52
I think it's a really good player with
6:54
the Apple ecosystem not as good as the
6:57
Apple watch but honestly plenty good
6:59
enough and if you have any possibility
7:01
that you're gonna someday migrate over
7:03
to an Android well this is obviously
7:05
gonna be a very smooth transition for
7:07
this particular SmartWatch so I'm gonna
7:10
go and see if I can get my heart rate
7:12
going with a workout and I'll catch you
7:14
in my next video
