Coffee over ice doesn't taste remotely like cold brew, as any coffee fan will tell you. The big difference is time: You can make a cup of coffee and pour it over ice in a minute or two, but good cold brew takes 24 hours. Or does it? That's the point of the Dripo cold brew coffee maker: Using the Japanese drip system, it lets you make delicious cold brew coffee in about 2 1/2 hours. Does it work, and how does it taste? Tech expert and coffee fan Dave Taylor of https://www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ takes a break from tech gadgets to give the Dripo coffee maker a whirl. And the result is... Dave Taylor here and this time I'm in my
0:02
kitchen because we're going to play Mad
0:04
Scientist we're going to try out the
0:06
dripo travel iced drip coffee maker and
0:10
the idea is that it's going to make us
0:12
cold brew coffee in only 2 and 1/2 hours
0:15
sounds like a long time but if people
0:17
that actually understand and appreciate
0:19
coffee know that cold brew is typically
0:23
24 hours and the idea is it takes some
0:25
of the edge out of coffee sure you can
0:27
make it you can grind the beans and put
0:29
it to a or something or do a cake C or
0:31
something but doing a cold brew is a
0:34
slow process and it makes it just taste
0:37
a lot better so the question is can you
0:39
really do that in just a couple hours
0:41
let's find out so we're going to try the
0:44
dripo and it's basically you have a
0:46
container you have a thing to put your
0:48
coffee in you have a thing to put your
0:50
water in you put them all together and
0:52
boom it just sits and runs and you go
0:54
and do something else for a couple hours
0:56
so to start I'm going to take my coffee
1:00
and I'm going to actually grind the
1:01
beans our goal is to create a/4 cup of
1:04
ground coffee
1:06
so we will do
1:09
that with my little coffee grinder
1:12
because we want this to be as fresh as
1:16
possible and I just grind it probably
1:18
longer than I need to but I just wait
1:22
until I don't hear anything so we can
1:25
assume that it's a pretty good well
1:27
ground coffee Okay so we have it ground
1:31
now I'm going to go ahead and get 1/4
1:33
cup of coffee out of this and it's
1:37
ground beans of course and I'm going to
1:40
use a little spoon make it a little
1:42
easier and perhaps a bit less of a
1:45
mess and oh I might be slightly generous
1:49
with my 1/4 cup of coffee but here's a
1:52
really important step is I want to
1:55
actually get it wet because the key to
1:58
success with this device is to have the
2:02
coffee a little moist so that boy it's
2:07
making a mess so that it the water
2:10
spreads more evenly along the coffee as
2:13
it brw so this is sort of a huge mess
2:17
we'll just sort of roll with it and I'm
2:19
going to put it all in
2:26
here and then you can see I sort of
2:30
left a bit of a mess we'll just cover
2:32
that up and who knows maybe someday
2:35
that'll magically fix itself but I'm
2:36
going to put a drop more water in even
2:39
though I know this is also going to just
2:40
make a little bit more of a mess but
2:43
really really important you want to have
2:46
the water as it flows through the system
2:48
go through as much of the coffee as
2:50
possible so just a little drop or two
2:56
and now we're pretty much ready to roll
2:59
you want to spread it around and Tamp it
3:02
down so it's nice and
3:05
even and I think we're good to go we get
3:10
this coffee that's on the spoon cuz we
3:13
want nice strong coffee so we don't want
3:15
to lose too much of our coffee grounds
3:18
in this
3:19
process now the next step is the system
3:24
includes these little filters now you
3:26
can use any coffee filter and just cut
3:28
it to size but this just makes it easy
3:31
and they recommend you just put it on
3:33
top and the idea is that it's supposed
3:34
to help spread the water around so we're
3:38
basically ready to roll so this goes in
3:41
here and then this screws on
3:49
top uh supposed to screw on top some we
3:52
are having minor technical issues here
3:55
so
3:57
standby there we go Okay so so now you
4:00
can see we have the container the coffee
4:02
the filter and this top unit is a drip
4:05
unit but since we're making iced coffee
4:08
we want to
4:09
start with ice so that's easy enough so
4:12
I'm going to drop a bunch of ice in here
4:14
and then fill it up with
4:22
water and we're done I'm going to go
4:25
ahead and just put the lid
4:28
on
4:30
and you can see here in the middle it's
4:33
starting to drip so now we need to wait
4:36
2 and 1/2 hours so I'll clean up this
4:38
mess and in 2 and 1/2 hours I'll come
4:40
right back and tell you a little bit
4:41
more about the dripo coffee
4:43
system okay so about 2 and 1/2 hours
4:46
have passed and as you can see we've
4:48
gone from an empty lower container to
4:51
nice thick dark coffee I hope it's going
4:54
to taste good we're basically done you
4:57
never quite get rid of everything on the
4:58
top but I'm just going to call it and
5:01
I'm going to unscrew this and I can take
5:04
all the pieces apart later I just want
5:06
to get to the coffee so I'll just move
5:08
this over to here put it out of the
5:13
way smells like some pretty serious
5:16
coffee let's add a little bit of
5:18
cream just kind of like having cream in
5:21
my coffee so I'll pour a little bit
5:25
in that's looking like coffee I could
5:28
add some ice cubes heck I could add
5:29
those ice cubes but let's just give it a
5:31
swirl and a
5:35
taste M it's really good it's smoother
5:39
than if I would have just made straight
5:41
coffee these are still pretty aggressive
5:43
beans if you know what I mean so it's
5:45
still a really strong bite to it but
5:47
that's those beans that's what I used so
5:50
different coffee is going to give you
5:51
very different results but 2 and 1/2
5:54
hours not bad and that's not a huge
5:57
amount of coffee but it's definitely
5:58
plenty to keep me going for a couple
6:00
hours now having done all this and
6:03
having spent all this time on this
6:05
device let's talk about it so this is
6:09
all these pieces are the dripo travel
6:12
cold brew iced drip coffee maker and the
6:15
intention of is that you could actually
6:17
use it in a hotel room pretty easily
6:19
especially if you planned ahead and you
6:21
packed some ground coffee and maybe even
6:23
measured it out and had it in a couple
6:25
of Ziplocs it's going to be way better
6:27
than that $4 single Curry cup that
6:30
you're going to get from the hotel
6:32
coffee maker um it is known as Dutch or
6:35
Japanese style drip coffee the entire
6:38
unit is about 1.2 lb so it's not like it
6:41
weighs very much it's really high
6:44
quality plastic it's not glass um and
6:47
the unit itself it's a 20 oz tumbler and
6:50
it's a 10 oz uh 10 oz IC drip coffee
6:54
maker so their intention is that you're
6:56
going to end up making about 10 oz of
6:59
coffee little less than a can of soda
7:01
but that's okay why would you want a can
7:03
of soda when you can have fresh coffee
7:05
now I love the container it's a
7:07
Kickstarter campaign but the whole thing
7:09
looks like this huge milk container
7:11
really fun packaging and the filters it
7:15
comes in a pack of 50 you get like 20 of
7:17
them or something with the container
7:18
when you buy it but it's really pretty
7:21
ridiculously inexpensive this 50 filters
7:24
only runs you
7:26
$4.95 off of their website and this unit
7:30
excuse me this unit you can get for
7:33
$34.95 off of the get dripo decom site
7:38
but with a little bit of hunting I think
7:40
you could find it online for even less
7:42
than that so I'm sold this is a really
7:45
fun and easy way to make drip and cold
7:48
brew coffee and something where I
7:50
certainly can imagine like first thing
7:52
in the morning crack a dawn I get up I
7:55
get this thing rolling and then you know
7:57
a couple hours later I'm like midm
7:59
morning I'm ready to go and I got some
8:02
nice cold brew coffee ready to drink so
8:05
this is Dave Taylor this is the dripo
8:08
coffee maker and I'm ready to continue
8:11
drinking this fantastic coffee and I'll
8:13
catch you in my next
