Mustaches are a very defining point of a beard, but also rocking a mustache on its own
0:05
means you have to know exactly where to trim and not to trim. Now you have four areas, the top, the bottom, the sides and the notch
0:13
And in this video, we're going to go over all of the tips and tricks for making sure that your mustache looks great, whether or not you're rocking it alongside a hefty or short beard
0:21
or you're just doing a mustache on its own. I tried to do the fancy one once, but I couldn't put up with the mustache's hairs in my
0:29
mouth all the time so here are all the tricks you need to know the most important line is the
0:37
bottom line the line just below or above your lip line now this is where beards can get a little bit
0:45
tricky and annoying essentially when i had a shorter beard my lip line was much higher as in you could
0:51
see my entire lip you could see my top lip bottom lip and a little bit of skin now i'm not saying
0:57
that that was the right thing to do but it was just something that that felt right at the time
1:01
And now that I've got a much bigger beard, I feel like a much thicker mustache
1:05
much longer, denser mustache is very important. Now, I waited until the top hairs here
1:11
were able to reach the entire length of my mustache all the way down
1:16
And that's what gives it that nice, big, thick fullness. Now, I went to a barber once
1:21
and they trimmed it up with some sort of clippers, and I just didn't like it
1:24
So I like a nice big full mustache, and it takes a while because these top hairs
1:28
need to grow out until they reach the bottom. But this bottom line is very important
1:33
once your hairs are long enough. Now, I use my little trimmer
1:38
So a little trimmer head is very important. I don't use my wall trimmers that I use for everywhere else
1:43
because I need a short little trimmer distance here because there's lots of angles to get right
1:48
Also, my scissors, I use those and a comb, a fine tooth comb
1:53
And so first of all, I just start off, brushing the mustache down
1:57
Now I've got a mirror just, here so I can show you exactly what I do. But on the bottom line here, all I'm looking for is a continuous sweep
2:05
Now, I can do that with my trimmers, so I just make sure that I'm always sort of like
2:11
adhering to the top of my top lip. So just taking off the smallest amount possible, because I don't want to completely reshape
2:23
my mustache at this time. But one of the most tricky areas are right in the middle
2:28
And so what I do is, to get that right, is I put on a little smile
2:33
and the little smile just flattens out that curve a little bit, so it's much easy to see where it should join and the curvature
2:38
because it's an area where I have a huge amount of difficulty
2:45
And I got some in my mouth, but that's all right. It's off, my teeth. Oh, gross. Okay
2:51
I think I've got all. So now I've trimmed up this bottom line
2:55
The one check that I always do is with my bottom lip, I run my bottom lip over this mustache line and it really sensitive and it like the easiest way to make sure that all of the hairs are where you want them to be trimmed to and you can certainly detect any kind of
3:12
hairs that poke out from that line. So I do that with my bottom lip and
3:17
overall I think I'm happy with that. I can't feel any sort of like weird lines that are out of place and
3:23
the next thing is right in the corners here. Now I try not to go too far because I don't want to cut into this mass or
3:29
of hair here, but I do find that if I don't pay particular attention to this area when it's
3:35
trimmed up, it's the first area to get annoying. So I will just trim up some of the hairs
3:42
just a little bit, just to the corner of my mouth, and I'll do that on both sides. I have this
3:49
really weird, see-through, almost sort of like transparent hair here that always gets me
3:55
So, I'll always be very careful to make sure that I get that
4:01
Once again, check in with the bottom lip to make sure that there's no hairs out of place
4:06
And overall, I think I'm happy with that. The last check I do is I actually smile
4:12
Because I don't want a super long mustache and I want it to stay out of my mouth, I smile
4:16
And I can see that there are no, sort of, I use the contrast between my teeth and my hair
4:20
and I can see that there's no hairs that are like obviously longer than the rest
4:25
And there we have it. So we're just a small, narrow-headed trimmer and some scissors
4:30
We've just tidied up the bottom line, and it already feels much better
4:35

4:51

5:02
And one thing I found is that I didn't have the patience to push through it growing into my mouth
5:07
before I could wax it to the side. So I've kept it nice and short. Now that's not to say
5:12
I can't grow the sides here. So you can see that this is relatively long. But one thing I want
5:17
it to do is I want it to sort of flow nicely into my beard. Now, this is one area where I easily
5:23
forget to trim, and then what happens is it gets like bulky on the sides. And you can see it a little
5:30
bit there when it's just sort of like poking out. It's not part of the beard. And so one thing I like
5:35
to do is just sort of like splay it out with a little bit of the beard underneath. And then I just
5:41
get the scissors and I just sort of like take off some of those longer bits. And I do that on both
5:47
sides and I don't go too crazy but you can see already that it just flows nicely into the
5:55
line of the beard without it being sort of like bulky here because here you have a lot of
6:00
competing areas of growth Mustache the cheeks and the bit under the jaw here where it just starting to grow it can really get bulky and I want mine to flow nicely Now if you going for a nice fancy mustache you need to put up with that being a bit bulky and then you sort of like can curl it up to the sides
6:18
I've got a little bit of a long hair here. So I'm just going to trim it off to make sure that I don't have any sort of like weird long hairs and
6:28
always looking for symmetry, so always checking both sides at the same time. Overall, I don't do too much to the
6:34
sides, but there we are, it's flowing nicely into my beard. And if you have a shorter beard
6:39
actually, having a longer hair here looks really kind of cool, I think. You end up with this kind of
6:44
like bulky mustache that goes into stubble, and I think that fade does look kind of cool
6:49
you know, growing a beard stash, I think it's called. But yes, having a nice big bulky mustache
6:54
if you don't want the bulk here, you can still have a nice big, beefy mustache, and the way that
6:59
flows into your stubble or your beard underneath is completely up to you. But make sure that you do
7:04
get rid of that bulk so it flows nicely. All right, the top line of the mustache. This is a place where a
7:10
lot of people just ignore. And unfortunately, it is one of the most defining points of a mustache. Now
7:16
some people like to trim it relatively low. And I'm not to say that that's good, bad, it's just not
7:22
my style. So I like a nice full mustache, but I still have some issues because I have hairs that
7:29
kind of like escapes the top line. And you can see maybe up here that there's
7:34
a little bit of like asymmetry going on because I've got hairs that stick up here
7:40
Once again, very simple. I just use my scissors. So first of all, I want to make sure that
7:45
where my hair's growing, it's growing symmetrically. So I've got some hairs up here, always checking
7:52
Okay, we just got rid of those and I think that's much better. So now I got rid of this kind
7:59
of bulk that was up here. Looking at my nose hairs, now my nose hairs. Oh, as I'm, as I, as
8:04
I'm getting older, they are getting longer, they are getting wiry, they're getting crazy, but luckily
8:09
today there's none sticking out and I do like to have a definite distinction between my nose and my
8:16
mustache because, you know, I've seen those mustaches where the nose hairs kind of like flow into the
8:21
mustache and I'm not a huge fan of that. So I'd usually like to see a light little bit of skin, even a
8:27
small slither between my nose and my mustache and it's there, no issues. If I see any nose
8:34
hair throughout the week, boom, they're instantly gone, trimmed off, done. The last little thing
8:39
I do is with my single blade safety razor is I do just make sure that there's no stray hairs
8:46
There are one or two hairs on my face that grow above the line. Now I have to be so careful
8:52
because I don't want to cut into the mustache with this. This is why a single blade safety razor
8:57
is so much better than a cartridge multi-blade thing. So I just cut away very slowly until
9:04
until I get rid of those one or two hairs that sit above the line. And that it I got it Now the thing is about these single blade safety razors is that because they a single blade I can actually feel them cut They feel like a little bit of resistance and as long as I feel like those little nicks I all good to go
9:21
And on this side I don't have too many other than one that's quite higher up
9:26
And then just one or two that sit a little bit above that line. But overall, this is my problem side with the bulkiness up here and the little bit of
9:37
one or two hairs that escaped the top line, but overall, looking at symmetry, happy with that
9:42
and no nose hairs in mustache. All right, we're ready to go. The last little place is the
9:48
mustache notch. Now, I have full growth in the middle here, so I leave it alone, but there are
9:53
some people that like to cut a little notch into their mustache. Now, I'm not to say that's good
9:58
bad, or anything other than what it is, which is a mustache notch. Now, if you don't have much
10:03
growth here, feel free to sort of like kind of thin it out with some scissors just to make sure
10:08
that you have kind of a defined start to your beard. For me, this is nice and full in the middle
10:13
I leave it well alone. Sometimes I will, because you've got that kind of cleft in the middle
10:18
I will put two little notches either side just to follow that top lip line. Tiny, tiny, tiny
10:27
amount, not much. And then in the middle, I like to get rid of that bulk a little bit because
10:32
with that cleft kind of brings hairs together and so it can get a little bit bulkier than the rest
10:37
But overall, I leave it well alone, get rid of some of the bulk, maybe follow the two little notches
10:43
but try not to overdo it. I've overdone it in the past and it just looks a little bit awkward
10:49
But overall, final checks of the mustache after doing everything is that it's nice and symmetrical
10:54
looking in the mirror, nice, nice, nice. Bottom line is good. It's not tickling my bottom lip and the lip tells me
11:02
me that it's even, there's no weird bits sticking out. Teeth check
11:08
Oh, what's that? I got something in my teeth, you didn't tell me. Alright, we're all good, so there's no hairs sticking out that I can see
11:16
which means that when I smile for photos, there isn't that kind of fuzziness over my teeth
11:21
and sides nice and flush with the beard. A bit of wax wouldn't go amiss at this point, but overall, symmetry's good
11:30
lines are nice and tidy, haven't got any. any weird sort of like hairs that are escaping
11:35
Maybe I could take off this little bit, but I've decided to leave that just a little bit
11:41
oh yeah, because I risk cutting into my mustache this side a little bit more
11:46
Overall, there is what I do every fortnight. I hope it's helped
