Welcome to our MailChimp tutorial for beginners
0:02
So in today's video, we're going to create a new account, upload some of our existing contacts
0:07
send our first email, create a form, and add the form to our website
0:11
create a landing page, and set up an automated email to be sent out to new subscribers
0:15
Let's get started. Okay, so here we are at MailChimp.com. To get started, just click on Sign Up For Free
0:21
in the top right corner. Obviously, if you wanted to, from the very beginning, get started with a paid plan, you're very welcome to do that
0:27
but what we're gonna do today is go through everything you can do with a free MailChimp account
0:32
So first, enter your email. Okay, and then go to your email
0:45
So here in your email, you're able to then activate your MailChimp account by clicking here
0:50
I am not a robot. Okay, now it wants to know which plan I want
0:54
Let's just get started with the free plan. You can use up to 2,000 contacts and send 10,000 emails
1:02
Let's set up your account with your information, GIF, and then continue
1:09
Add in our address. Tell us about your contacts. Do you have a list of contacts
1:14
I'll show you how you can upload these later. I'm gonna say no for right now
1:18
What do you plan to offer? Original content, and then continue. Tell us where you set up to shop
1:27
We have our own website, continue. Stay on the loop about MailChimp
1:32
Do you wanna get emails from them? Okay, and then so a lot of this stuff we're not gonna run through right now
1:38
So if you, along the side here, you can click on audience
1:42
and see, okay, there's one contact and one subscriber, so I imagine that's probably me
1:50
Okay, so I'm going to message myself, I guess. And then from here, so if I have other contacts
1:54
I wanna add, what I could do is add contacts. So you could obviously add one person at a time
2:00
If I clicked here and go to add subscriber, I can add that one specific person
2:05
If I have a bunch of contacts that I want to import right now, I can do it like this
2:09
So upload a CSV file. And then what I can do here is
2:15
let's see if I can just drag and drop it. Okay, so we have this CSV file with two contacts
2:21
See if I can drag and drop. No, it didn't like that, so let's browse
2:27
MailChimp tutorial, upload CSV file. Okay, here we go, and then continue to organize
2:33
So the status of these contacts will be subscribed. And then if you had, some of these were already
2:39
within MailChimp, you could then go to update any existing contacts, but these are all new
2:45
so continue to tag. And then so, you know, if I wanted to create a tag
2:50
for if these were my customers, this was for 2021, if this was best customers ever
2:58
I could create a tag for best customers ever, and then continue to match
3:03
And then here, so we have two contacts, and so we have the first name in the CSV file
3:09
and email address, and so here are the two names, here are the email addresses, and then finalize to import
3:17
And then here we can go to complete import. And we're good to go with that
3:26
So I can exit out of this or view imported contacts. So we now have a couple contacts within MailChimp
3:32
The next thing I wanted to do is show you how to send your first email
3:36
So you're gonna do that within the campaigns tab. So if you click on campaigns right here
3:40
and then there's gonna be a couple of different options. And so what we'll do here is view by type
3:47
So we want an email campaign. And then so what we can do here is try it out
3:53
And so do we want regular automated plain text? Let's go with a regular campaign
3:58
So first campaign, begin. And then so here you can choose who you wanna send it to
4:03
So we could send it to everyone, the three people we have subscribed
4:07
We could also go in here and edit this and send it to, for example, our best customers ever
4:13
which is just two people. Or, and then we go down. So don't forget to save that if you make any updates
4:19
From there, you can change who the email is being sent from. So obviously this is gonna be our info email
4:24
You wanna add a subject to your email. So best email ever for best clients
4:32
And then the preview text is basically the first couple of characters of the email
4:36
If you leave this blank, it's basically just gonna pull in the very beginning text of your email
4:41
If you want to say something differently, you can add that right here
4:44
So this email is a promotion. And so it's gonna say this subject line
4:50
and then within the email, it's gonna show them this before you click on and open the email
4:55
Click save. And then from here, we want to go and start designing the email
5:02
So they have, so we'll just start with the classic builder for right now so you can get familiar with that
5:06
They're apparently creating something new. Depending on the type of business that you have
5:10
if you're looking to add, like obviously this looks like more of an e-commerce business
5:14
where you're gonna have a lot of images. What we end up doing is creating emails
5:18
that more look like a one-on-one email. So I am sending you an email as if we were friends
5:23
but on a massive scale. And so we want that not to be super designed
5:28
but just using simple text. So we can just go with the simple text style like this
5:32
Okay, so here we are with our first email. So there's a lot that we can do here. So we can go in and add different things
5:37
by basically dragging and dropping into the email builder like so. If we want to add an image as a block section like this
5:45
and then we could just go browse or add emails here or add an image here
5:50
I'm just gonna delete that for right now though. So for example, this section with the larger font and bold
5:55
I don't really want right now, so I can just delete that. And then to edit this section
6:00
you can click on this right here. And then what it's gonna do is along the right-hand side
6:03
you don't actually edit the text on the left here. You're gonna edit the text that you want
6:08
in your email along over here. So. So I'm gonna go in and add a link to this
6:11
So I'm gonna go in and add a link to this. Click here, click here, click here. And so if I wanna add a link to this
6:16
I could just highlight the text and then add a link like so
6:21
And then maybe this is just sending people to our homepage. Also, if I wanna insert an image
6:29
into the middle of this text, I could do so by clicking here
6:32
If I wanted to add say a numbered list I could say, you know, I could add something like so
6:40
There's a lot of options within here. And then also I wanna show you how you can add
6:44
some personalizations adding their name. So hello. And then by clicking the merge tags
6:51
it should come up with, so here we go for first name. And then so basically now it's gonna change this
6:57
for basically pulling the name from the context. If you're gonna use this you wanna make sure
7:01
that you're actually collecting the information. And so we have that. And then this for the email
7:06
obviously you can do a whole lot more with design and things like that. This part down below is going to pull in your company name
7:13
the year to say this is copyrighted. And also you wanna make sure to leave all this stuff
7:18
that allows someone to unsubscribe or update their preferences. So don't change the stuff down at the bottom
7:24
Some other stuff you might want to do. So after you've done editing the text here
7:29
you know, for example, you could add the buttons for social follow. So I could drag those in and add that block right here
7:36
Obviously I need to go in and add all of the actual accounts
7:40
for our business, our website, and everything else if I was gonna use this
7:44
So I'm gonna actually go now and get rid of it because we don't need that just yet
7:51
And then here, so if I were finished and this email's good to go, I could click continue
7:58
So we have, this is gonna be sent to our best customers ever
8:03
It's gonna come from our info email. We chose the subject. We added the content
8:11
And that's really all there is to sending an email. And so the next thing obviously is you could finish later
8:17
you can schedule, or you could send right now. So to send right now, add a from
8:22
So maybe I haven't confirmed that yet. So okay, from JJ at the Figco
8:28
Save, I cannot use that, so at, save. Does that work? Okay
8:36
And so now you can see this is not grayed out anymore, so I can send my first email in MailChimp
8:42
So send, and then send now, and there we go. Email sent to two people with MailChimp
8:50
Okay, so there's a bunch more that you can do, and what I wanted to do next
8:54
so one of the most common ways to collect emails is a form on your website
8:59
And so to do that, if we go to create, so you'll see a lot of the different things
9:04
that you might wanna create are gonna be just by clicking on that icon right there
9:08
So you can see email, customer journey, email templates. So you can design different templates
9:13
and then just pull in the template, fill in the information, and have it ready to send
9:17
This will speed up your process, especially if you have very designed emails that you're creating
9:22
You can create a landing page, surveys, ads, social posts, and signup form
9:27
So I wanted to show you the signup forms, because this is something that you could then embed on your website
9:31
So an embedded form, a pop-up form, and so let's just go with the embedded form
9:37
Okay, so here's the form that we could embed. So we have the email address, first name
9:41
last name, and birthday. And then here's the code that you would add
9:45
to your website. The thing is with this form right now, though, is it asks for a lot of information
9:50
And so the more information you ask somebody for, the less likely they are to sign up
9:54
And so if you need all of this information, by all means, ask for it. But if your goal is to get more signups
9:59
the less you ask for it, the better. And so what you can do here is if you go to signup forms
10:06
and then go to form builder, basically you can edit this information
10:10
And so for the signup form, you can see all of this. And so just a couple things
10:14
One, I would probably ask for a first name before the email. The last name, I don't really think is all that important
10:21
especially right away, so I'm gonna hide this. And then down below you can see save field
10:28
And then you can see now this is hidden. So you can still collect this information if you want to
10:32
but these forms don't actually need to collect it. The same thing with birthday
10:37
So let's hide the birthday and then click save field. Okay, so now if we go back to
10:45
so if you go to signup forms right here with an audience, and then go back to embed forms like so
10:54
And then you can see now it's just asking for first name and email
10:58
And so you can also adjust if something is required or not
11:02
So right now we're only requiring their email address and not even their first name
11:06
But if we're okay with this, we can just scroll down here and take all of this text and copy it
11:12
And so what we're gonna do here, so we build all of our websites in Squarespace
11:16
So if you wanna see how to build a website in Squarespace, I'll link to a tutorial up above
11:21
So if we go to edit this page, this pop-up is built with ConvertKit
11:25
We have a ConvertKit tutorial too if you're interested. But let's say we want to add the form right along here
11:33
So what we could do is, it's not giving me what I want to use
11:41
The, right here, okay. And so what we wanna do is add a code section like so
11:46
And then here we basically just copy, or we paste everything that we got from MailChimp
11:53
and then click apply. So here we are, this whole form right here
11:57
I could click save. And then if we go to our homepage now
12:03
you should see down at the very bottom, here's our form from MailChimp
12:10
So, you know, in just a matter of minutes, we can edit what we're actually collecting
12:15
as far as our forms, and copy and paste the code onto our website
12:19
Another great way to collect emails are through landing pages. So it's actually a one-page website
12:25
that the only purpose is collecting someone's email. And a lot of times what you'll do is give something away
12:29
for free in exchange for their email. So you may create a guide or something
12:34
that you'll give somebody if they give you their email address. So it's one of the best ways to grow your email list
12:39
is through landing pages and actually giving something away. So say a guide or some type of training
12:44
And so use a landing page that talks about what you're gonna be giving away for free
12:48
in exchange for someone's email. We have a whole bunch of information as far as getting started with email marketing
12:53
I'll link to that video up above right here. But so to create the landing page
12:57
what we're gonna do now is we click on create again, and then we can scroll down to landing page right here
13:05
give it a name, so best landing page ever. Begin. Okay, their templates use stock images
13:15
All right, and so what you're gonna see here, you have a couple of different options. So you have ones that are meant for lead generation
13:19
so that's to collect someone's email, and they have some that are meant for payments as well
13:24
And so what we're gonna do today is choose one of them that's for collecting email
13:29
So grow your list like this one. And then you're gonna see everything with MailChimp
13:33
has a fairly similar layout and design and how it all works. And so you'll see all the blocks along the side here
13:40
If you wanna add additional sections or whatever. And so what you'll see here right now
13:43
it's only asking for email address. If, for example, I wanna also ask for first name
13:49
you can see, like so, you can add that. You could ask for phone number, birthday
13:53
you know, some of the stuff that you saw earlier. This is what we wanted to do, and we wanted to
13:59
let's say we wanna just delete this. And then we could, this could just be
14:05
you know, if we didn't wanna enter our logo, we could say the Figco. You know, we can adjust the text to be
14:12
you know, aligned right, to be centered like it was. And you know, if we wanna edit this section
14:24
Something like that. And so obviously we could add other images and make this look a lot better
14:28
but you kind of get the idea how this would work. If I'm done with that section, save and close
14:33
And then I can save and close this right here. So we have the title, this is the URL
14:39
And then one of the other things that's really important that's gonna get into how to segment your audience
14:44
are by using tags. So if you had a bunch of these landing pages
14:47
so we have a personal branding course, we have a YouTube masterclass, we have a guide to Instagram
14:53
we have all these different things and different landing pages. And we want to be able to segment our audience
14:57
to know, hey, what did they sign up for? What are they interested in? So if this was for our personal branding course
15:04
we could edit the audience like so, and then we may want to add a tag
15:08
We could choose a tag that already exists like this one or type in a new one, personal branding course, like so
15:18
And then again, don't forget to click save. So now what's gonna happen is whenever someone signs up
15:24
for this landing page, they're gonna have the tag added, personal branding course
15:30
And then if we're all set with that, we can click publish
15:34
And if we wanna see what the landing page looks like, we can open it right here
15:39
So now someone can sign up with their email and first name on this landing page
15:43
So now I wanna show you how to actually set up the automation so that we can send them an email
15:47
as soon as they sign up for this form. So click on create, and then email
15:53
and then not a regular email. So that's one that you either send immediately
15:57
or you can say send on Friday at 2 p.m. But what we want now is an automated email
16:04
And so there's a couple of different things you could do here. So everyone that signs up for your email list
16:08
you could say welcome new subscribers and set up an email to send to everyone
16:13
This is what we're doing now is we're segmenting it so you send out an email to differently
16:18
depending on what they actually signed up for. And so here you see email subscribers when they're tagged
16:23
And so when someone signs up for that landing page, we added the personal branding tag
16:28
And so let's begin this. One of the things that's important with the free plan of MailChimp
16:33
is you can only send one automated email. If you have a paid plan, it's the same thing
16:37
with ConvertKit and other email marketing softwares. They'll let you send the first automated email
16:42
but if you wanna send a sequence like the seven-day personal branding course
16:46
you need to actually upgrade to add email. So you can see that right here. It's gonna let me send one email right now
16:51
And so trigger one day after a tag is added. So what we can do here is if we edit this
16:57
we don't want it to be one day after, we want it to be immediately
17:00
And so if someone signs up, they're gonna get email one right away
17:05
So personal branding course. So when this tag is added, immediately send email update trigger
17:12
Okay, and then now we want to design the email. And you're gonna see this is gonna be the same thing
17:17
as what we just did a little while ago. So this is day one from me
17:24
from this email, and then next. Okay, again, choose the template. We're just gonna use the simple text
17:31
Again, let's get rid of this huge text at the top. Then let's edit this text
17:38
And so obviously, there's a whole bunch of stuff you can do if we wanna change the style
17:42
if we want to change the font that we're using. So if we wanna use Georgia, we can change it here
17:50
Let's delete all of this and say hi. Then let's add their first name in the merge tag
17:55
So first name. And then so I could obviously, I could go to our YouTube channel
18:06
And then if I wanted to send, let's say, why build a personal brand
18:10
So yeah, I had a beard for a little while. When all the lockdown started last year
18:15
I think I went a month or two without shaving. Okay, anyways, back to MailChimp
18:21
And so here, if I wanted to send that video, I could then add a link
18:28
Paste, insert. You know, I could do the same thing if I inserted an image of, say, the video thumbnail
18:34
and then create a link if someone clicks on the picture as well. Okay, so something like that
18:42
And then click save and close. And then click save and continue
18:46
Okay, so you can see now, so we have tag to contact
18:50
Immediately after a tag is added, the personal branding course tag. Send it every day, all day, post action
18:59
Okay, so that's all good to go. And then if I click next, okay, this audience
19:05
this tracking, tag to contact, start sending. You're about to start this workflow
19:11
which contains one email to start sending. Okay, so now what I can do is so if we go
19:18
if we actually go to the landing page that I created and I put in my email and my name
19:25
and then I sign up. And so success, you've been added to the audience
19:31
And so now what should happen is if I now go back
19:36
to audience, it may take a second for all this to go through
19:43
And so here is me just signing up. Here's my first name
19:47
And you can see the tag for personal branding was added. And let's see if the automated email was sent
19:53
Okay, so here we are, day one personal branding course. So you can see that maybe 30 seconds or so
19:59
after I signed up for the landing page that the automated first email was sent out
20:07
So that's really the basics of, we ran through, getting the account set up, adding some existing contacts
20:13
sending an email, adding a form, creating a landing page, and sending out an automated email
20:19
If you wanna send out actually the seven day course like what we were talking about here
20:24
you would need to upgrade to a paid plan for MailChimp. So how'd it go? Did you get everything set up in MailChimp
20:29
If you're just getting started with email marketing, definitely check out our email marketing for beginners video
20:33
I'll link to that above right here. Also, if you wanna see how we went from having no subscribers
20:38
to over 25,000 subscribers in one year using YouTube, check out the video below
20:43
Hope to see you in those and future videos. Bye bye
