hi my name is Don Robinson and this is
0:02
my deep wreck diver Channel I get loads
0:04
of comments on my videos from people
0:06
amazed at the quality of some of the
0:08
Dives I'm fortunate enough to do so I
0:10
thought I'd put something together that
0:12
explains why I think Plymouth is the
0:14
best location in the UK and arguably the
0:17
world for deep technical wreck diving so
0:20
one of the great things about Plymouth
0:21
is how much diving we've got at a really
0:24
good depth for for a technical diver so
0:27
for me obviously you can dive deep in
0:29
the 100 m but you don't get very much
0:31
bottom time if you dive shallower than
0:34
60 you know arguably not really a
0:36
technical dive in my view so that sweet
0:39
spot of 60 to 100 m is kind of where you
0:41
want to be now if you look at this image
0:44
here uh you can see down the bottom that
0:46
shows the uh the depth in the English
0:49
Channel and the what the bit at the top
0:51
shows you know where it is so basically
0:53
you can see that kind of green to
0:55
darkish blue is where we want to be and
0:58
out of Plymouth there is just a whole
1:00
load of it so of course it's not just
1:02
the depth that you're interested in it's
1:04
also what you're going to go and dive
1:06
now the name of this channel deep wck
1:08
diver yeah no surprise I'm interested in
1:10
the wrecks and the great thing is about
1:13
the English Channel is that two world
1:16
wars and a whole hundreds of years of
1:20
shipping colliding into each other and
1:22
sinking in storms and everything has
1:24
just given us a ton of uh of diving now
1:28
this is the chart with Plymouth uh right
1:31
in the top in the center there and you
1:33
can see I kind of zooming out there now
1:36
the thing I'd just like you to focus on
1:38
is each of these red dots or red wreck
1:42
symbols on the uh on the chart every one
1:45
of those is a mark and the vast majority
1:47
of them are recks and that is probably
1:50
out to about 40 or 50 miles of Plymouth
1:53
you can see there is an awful lot of
1:55
them now most of them uh particularly
1:57
the further ones out May never have been
2:00
dived some of them will only have been
2:02
dived once and possibly a long time ago
2:05
which just makes for a great opportunity
2:07
to go and do loads of exploration and
2:10
finding new stuff if I tell you that in
2:13
the last four or five years I've been on
2:16
Dives where maybe 20 possibly even more
2:19
25 rex have been identified out of
2:21
Plymouth just gives you a feel for how
2:23
much uh exploration there is still to be
2:26
done so uh obviously it's not just about
2:30
the Rex it's not just about the depth
2:31
it's not just about the exporation there
2:33
other things that we need to factor in
2:35
as well so I'm going to Chuck in the
2:37
visibility now the visibility in
2:40
Plymouth not as great as say somewhere
2:42
like Malin obviously not as great as
2:44
somewhere um you know really warm you
2:46
know Tropics maybe bikini or truck or
2:48
somewhere like that but on its day can
2:51
still be pretty epic you can get 20 or
2:55
25 maybe even 30 m visibility on a great
2:58
day so this is good good what about the
3:00
water temperature I can hear loads of
3:02
people out there those of you who are
3:04
dive in Tropics or the
3:06
Mediterranean um and and you're all
3:08
going W it's rubbish isn't it you know
3:09
English Channel it's going to be
3:11
freezing cold well of course certainly
3:13
colder than uh than it is in some of the
3:16
places I mentioned but once again height
3:19
of Summer late summer we'll get 17 maybe
3:22
18 on The Deco stops so that's entirely
3:25
reasonable it's not like the Baltic uh
3:27
which is literally Baltic or or uh you
3:30
know some of the kind of Northern parts
3:31
of of Canada or uh places like that so
3:35
not really warm but certainly warm
3:37
enough that you don't need to take
3:39
extreme precautions to avoid the cold so
3:42
depth is good uh lots of wrecks warmth
3:46
is kind of okay visibility can be
3:48
outstanding on its day what else do we
3:50
need to think about well the key thing
3:52
for uh for technical diving especially
3:54
in tidal waters is you need the boats to
3:57
do it and we are absolutely blessed out
3:59
of Plymouth we've got several really
4:02
good operators who uh you know really
4:04
switched on for doing this kind of stuff
4:06
and are used to doing it so the support
4:08
is there on the surface there's also
4:10
other things as well you know gas
4:12
Logistics so no problems at all getting
4:14
helium and trimix and oxygen and nitrox
4:18
uh softener lime kit repaired you know
4:21
all those kind of stuff readily
4:22
available in Plymouth we got a whole ton
4:24
of of dive shops and dive providers so
4:27
that is uh that's awesome as well uh
4:29
what else well I guess marine life
4:31
English Channel absolutely Chalker with
4:34
it so uh loads of fish on all the recks
4:37
load if you're into sort of pink sea
4:39
fans and all that kind of stuff so loads
4:41
of kind of cold water corals uh and of
4:43
course increasingly we are starting to
4:46
see a whole load of dolphins and tuna in
4:50
the waters so uh lots and lots of marine
4:53
life for those of you who like that kind
4:54
of thing and I guess on the subject of
4:58
uh of Life the other thing of course to
5:00
remember is Plymouth is clearly one of
5:03
the uh one of The Nightlife hot spots of
5:05
the United Kingdom you want a good night
5:07
Union Street well not quite what it once
5:10
was but the barbacan is still uh a very
5:12
very uh lively place and of course we
5:16
have the very famous Dolphin Hotel
5:18
legendary drinking establishment and uh
5:21
that's always very welcoming to divers
5:23
and in fact anybody else and of course
5:26
another organization that's always very
5:28
welcoming to divers is uh the diving
5:31
diseases Research Center uh up in dford
5:34
in Plymouth which is one of the leading
5:36
uh recompression Chambers in the world
5:38
pioneered a whole load of treatments and
5:39
therefore if something does go wrong you
5:42
know you're in good hands so there you
5:44
go that's me making a case for Plymouth
5:48
uh we've got it all if you're if you're
5:50
interested uh let us know if you uh
5:54
disagree and you think that somewhere
5:55
rubbish like truck or bikini or
5:58
somewhere on the west West Coast or the
6:00
east coast of America Caribbean
6:03
Mediterranean Egypt whatever it is uh
6:06
then please I look forward to you making
6:07
your case in the comments okay thanks a
6:10
lot and I'll look forward to seeing you
