0:00
there's an industry right now that is using freeze dryers to completely transform the way they process their
0:05
product and I'm going to tell you about that through an interview that I had with the CEO of Holland Green science in
0:12
this interview you're going to better understand the Cannabis industry as well as how freeze dryers are being used to
0:19
completely revolutionize processing their products and it's really taking off in this particular industry now the
0:26
CEO is Michael and he's a fantastic guy who has a a lot of information and knowledge about this industry this is a
0:32
really fascinating topic for me because I really don't know much about the Cannabis side I don't use cannabis
0:38
myself but I also don't freeze dry cannabis but I know that the industry is booming there and I wanted to talk to
0:45
someone who has knowledge of that and actually makes freeze dryers and the application of their freeze dryers
0:51
actually has a lot to do with what we're all doing in the candy side fruit and other types of products this video is
0:57
going to only contain the audio portion of the interview speaking of audio if you just want to enjoy the content that
1:03
I'm producing via listening with your ears through podcast I've uploaded every interview that I've done for freeze
1:10
drying entrepreneurs as well as manufacturers under this frozen assets interview series and that is through the
1:16
frozen assets podcast you can get this right now on Apple podcast as well as Spotify any rating or review that you
1:23
submit will really help in the algorithm on these podcast platforms so that the interviews and the episodes go up up
1:30
more and more for people who are searching for freeze drying or entrepreneurship things like that so I'd
1:35
really appreciate it thanks a lot now let's get to the interview with Michael the CEO of Holland Green science I hope
1:41
you enjoy all right so uh again my background David is in traditional scientific equipment instruments freeze
1:48
dryers being a a big part of that so you know I I had been in this space where I
1:54
saw the scientific and uh uh scientific and pharmaceutical applications for
1:59
freeze drying yeah in machines that were extremely sophisticated and also at the
2:05
same time very expensive and out of the price point of what I would call other applications outside of again research
2:13
scientific uh stuff and then pharmaceutical production obviously right and uh then again my other
2:21
lifelong passion has been cannabis in what we call Hash making and for many
2:26
years what people did was that they made their own what we call bubble hash by
2:32
using just frozen water and silk screen bags to get what we call bubble hash
2:37
which is really just the separated Tri chromes from the biomass of cannabis the
2:42
problem then is to dry this material which again we call Hash hashish and so
2:48
what we used to do back in the olden days was uh just let it air dry and you
2:54
cross your fingers you pray to your gods that it comes out okay and doesn't go
2:59
moldy you know and um often that wasn't the case depending especially on your
3:05
climate and location then all of a sudden we started to see the first
3:10
commercial food grade freeze dryers at a price point that a
3:16
consumer and consumer but also a hash maker could afford and this was our
3:21
primary competition today and this company came on to the scene like Gang
3:26
Busters with a product that I tip my hat to was revolutionary again to bring the
3:33
the freeze drying technology that had been outside into this scientific pharmaceutical space into the hands of
3:39
regular people and letting their imaginations go with whatever they could do with it whether it was making hash or
3:44
doing food prep or you name it and we're learning every day the the new applications that people think of so at
3:51
about that time a lot of these hash makers moved into using our competitors
3:57
machines and uh that's when we started to notice some issues which were
4:02
primarily they use a what we call an autotune functionality what they call that's what they have trademarked and it
4:09
uses an algorithm that works with some stuff but not everything and it's especially doesn't work with cannabis
4:16
because the algorithm is much too aggressive and really kind of destroys your your product okay this was one
4:23
problem the other problem we started to see in labs in the Cannabis space is things emerged legal bigger production
4:30
facilities and that in a lot of these hashm facilities you have anywhere between 6 to 12 um uh uh freeze dryers
4:39
operating simultaneously pumping product out so what we started to see were some
4:44
safety issues fires being started uh little electroc electrocutions in that
4:50
so uh there were some issues safety wise uh the product wasn't coming out the way
4:56
we wanted it and then again to have a machine now that wasn't for uh someone
5:02
who was making maybe some food products a couple times a year or bringing it out once a month kind of like a bread maker
5:09
but this was their bread maker in Revenue it was now a machine that was
5:15
directly tied to making profits for people and now you need machines that can operate you know 24 hours in some
5:23
case a day in some day cases seven days a week and be able to stand up to that
5:28
kind of commercial IED application and our competitors machines didn't stand up
5:34
to it so that's when I started to really look at what I could do to solve these
5:40
problems for the Cannabis Market at that same time I was still trying to get something that was a really a home unit
5:47
freeze dryer that was a food grade machine I launched my first freeze dryer in the US market which we call our zeros
5:54
2 which is a it's really kind of a little bit of a trim trimed up
6:00
pharmaceutical it is a pharmag grade machine pilot scale very big does a lot of biomass and the customers using this
6:08
were primarily uh people who wanted to freeze dry cannabis flour as opposed to making hash so it was much more
6:15
sensitive to different moisture contents the variations between varieties there's a lot of varieties in cannabis just like
6:22
you have in potatoes or corn or whatever each one has different moisture cont uh
6:28
uh content different attributes and nuances that make you have to dial in
6:34
your settings your recipes so it needs to be fully programmable you need sterility uh uh a sterile envir
6:41
environment so everything's stainless steel again a pharmag grade machine and
6:47
uh so what we did was started to introduce this and into the Cannabis Market but this other piece still wasn't
6:53
there the smaller one for the concentrates the hash and then finally
6:58
in the midst of covid and everything else that hit us we were able to launch our what we call our zeros micro a
7:05
couple years ago it's been a little uh about two years now since we launched it okay and um we focused on the Cannabis
7:14
application and that's what we started to sell into and we had a machine that solved all these problems first of all
7:20
our machine is UL rated okay uh in the US but CE in Europe there's no risk for
7:27
Fires for electrical issues in that uh that was Paramount for us safety we also
7:33
have what's called a vacuum control valve which our competitors don't have that allows you to have much more
7:39
control over your vacuum okay and that's where we in the hash making business
7:45
worry about what we call tarpine preservation Tarpin are not a cannaboid
7:50
but are very important as we're learning more and more every day on the overall effects of a particular type of cannabis
7:57
and you want to preserve them this is where you get the smell the essence tpin are other things like lemons you have
8:02
that same turpine and lemons that you have in some cannabis strains and that you want to preserve that flavor Aroma
8:09
taste and also the chemical activity that goes on is the way it works with the other cannaboids so uh what we can
8:17
do with our machines is a very high level of tarpine preservation okay and
8:22
the other thing is our machines are very uh flexible adjustable uh you have a lot
8:28
more versatility so our standard food grade benchtop unit which is the zeros
8:34
micro comes in a nine tray configuration which is ideal for making bubble hash
8:41
and then even other applications like making candies freeze-dried candies or some other types of foods but it's a
8:47
very minimal uh tolerance between shelves so things that are larger you can't fit in so with our machine you can
8:55
pull out that nine shelf assembly it literally takes 30 seconds seconds there's a plugin back that comes out and
9:02
then you can slide in one of our accessory sets which is three seven or
9:07
uh uh five shelves now you've got a lot more opportunities you can do all different kinds of sized Foods fruits
9:15
vegetables but also you could do flowers from Cannabis and that so customers really like that a lot more versatility
9:22
those shelf assemblies they're easy to pull out that but you're going to notice one thing when you pull them out from our competitors they're heavy why are
9:29
they heavy stainless steel stainless steel is a decision we made that added weight and cost to our machines however
9:36
it's crucial when you're doing cannabis production because tpin are actually
9:42
corrosive uh with aluminum so you don't you want to avoid that especially over time that be becomes an issue but also
9:49
when you're talking about things like again cleanliness ability to clean good and that stainless steel is better than
9:55
aluminum which starts to get into some of the pharmaceutical scientific uh
10:01
applications so you know we we did a lot of things you know we we enhanced our components our vacuum sensors all of our
10:08
wire assemblies uh solid state relays uh you know again we we did a lot we have
10:15
20% more ice capacity for example than our competitor equivalent model we did a
10:21
lot of things really uh to enhance the the performance and overall quality of our machine that what ended up happening
10:28
was we started to bleed into those spec spec specifications for scientific
10:34
freeze dryers and as a result we now have customers that are in biotech
10:40
higher uh education research some of our customers are the Smithsonian Ruckers
10:46
university University of New Mexico several biotech companies around the
10:51
country uh that was something we never anticipated and sometimes we try to convince these people hey we want to
10:57
remind you this is a food grade machine we're not a pharmag grade machine I'll give them a list to people here this is
11:03
who I'd buy from and they're like no we're confident your machine's going to meet our expectations for our
11:09
application and they've had a lot of Success With It uh the other thing we have found now to is the food people are
11:16
starting to come our way because what we're finding in particular with the candy Market which is really booming now
11:23
uh you can go online free strike candy there are so many options uh our nine tray configuration works great for a lot
11:30
of the most popular candies but now with the accessories they can do things that
11:35
really you know gummies things like that that really expand when they pop in the freeze dryer and with our machine and
11:42
the efficiencies and that vacuum control valve and all these other things we built in we're seeing people can do
11:47
cycle times in an hour or less okay so they are just kicking out this candy a
11:52
lot more quickly they're getting much better efficiencies with our machine which is why they like our zeros micro
11:58
as well but then again when we uh look at Food sky is the limit you're only limited by
12:05
your own imagination we just did an expo in uh Barcelona last week uh it's called
12:12
spannabis it's obviously a cannabis Centric uh show one of the biggest in the world the biggest in Europe and one
12:18
of the things we were giving away is kind of a little you know promotional item was packets of freeze-dried
12:24
gaspacho that you could go ahead add water to and you had the the famous coold Spanish soup so uh again uh our
12:32
our technician in Europe is uh our lead technician in Europe Tuan he's a foodie in addition to being a Freez drying uh
12:40
fanatic so he's always working on different applications some of our customers in Europe are Michelin star uh
12:46
restaurants and using uh again what they call uh micro Gastronomy you know where
12:53
again it's just this wild uh presentation of much more traditional things that we you know are accustomed
12:58
to but using uh things like again liquid nitrogen freeze drying you name it you know using pipet uh to dispense sauces
13:07
and that it's an elevated type of thing so uh freeze-dried breast milk is
13:13
another application we're seeing uh again to preserve mother's milk uh in a much better uh more you know for
13:19
longevity than you could under traditionally just putting it in a refrigerator or that uh so again we are
13:26
constantly amazed at the new applications that people are using our machines with and the reason for that is
13:31
again uh the versatility the quality the enhancements of our machine and then I
13:37
think what's really important is customer service and U you know our entire team is really dedicated to the
13:44
success of our customers uh because again we've got people who might be making uh type of food for their family
13:51
preserving uh their Gardens Harvest or that that's important just as important as it is for these people who are making
13:58
products for a business and uh we don't want people ruining their batches we
14:04
don't want people having downtime we don't want people not getting the full potential out of their machine so one
14:10
thing we do that our competitors don't is every machine we sell that customer
14:16
gets a one-on-one call either virtual or a phone call with one of our technicians
14:21
who help them get that machine going set up any questions help them put in the
14:27
program settings for hash which we provide our customers play around with some food settings we want people to be
14:33
comfortable with their machines and feel confident that they can now start their adventure with that machine which is to
14:40
learn about all the stuff they can do again our machines are fully programmable only your imagination your
14:46
limit there's four placeholders for your different recipes or settings so you can store recipes in there uh our machines
14:54
you also have USB connectivity too so you can get data in and out we can give you upgrades as we continue to improve
15:00
our machine U so again we think we have something really special for the market we're very passionate about our business
15:06
our customers and um that's a little bit of who we are so again I started this
15:12
company with my partners in uh Europe uh in the Netherlands that's where our International Holding Group is based and
15:19
uh also then started Holland Green science uh USA here right as covid hit
15:25
it was late 2019 in November and uh again we had a global team we have uh
15:31
again uh some of our Engineers are also in Australia and in Asia and in Europe
15:37
and in the states here and uh it was an enormous challenge uh to get everything
15:42
together and to launch these new products of ours we started uh in addition to freeze dryers we sell a lot
15:48
of what people would call traditional laboratory tools like vacuum pumps vacuum ovens you kind of see our Niche
15:54
here a little bit and um what we would call kind of lab tools and um we also
16:00
created some other products specific to the Cannabis Market to solve problems you know and that's what we're all about
16:06
looking at those bottlenecks looking at where the pain points are and that's that really leads our product
16:12
development freeze drying has been around these industrial freeze dryers these freeze dryers like even that holl and green science has they've been
16:18
around but with the new applications for food and for fruits and starting unique
16:25
businesses with the different recipes and with candy is everyone now trying try to position themselves differently
16:32
yeah you know I think that everyone's breaking out in the niches a little bit more uh but I think a few things kind of
16:38
made this whole situation what it is again there was this traditional Pharma
16:43
scientific research application also the commercialized like Pet Food Market and
16:49
MREs things like that that was out there but what happened was like I said there
16:54
was finally machines that were at a price point that smaller business and people could afford and then the other
17:01
thing was this kind of U you know do-it-yourself kind of culture that emerged where people again wanted to do
17:08
more on their own uh there was again this uh I think people became a lot more
17:13
aware of their their food chains and where stuff came from want to take more control of that uh to try to preserve
17:20
and make as much of their own food as possible which you know that that's an important Market to us as well and then
17:26
like I said the Cannabis Market coming in with this new need too so there were a lot of things that just kind of came
17:33
together to create the perfect storm for freeze dry and we're in it now so right now our main focus is to continue to
17:40
ramp up our production to meet the customer demand because it is high and uh again make sure we have quality units
17:48
and and and again when there are issues that they're solved you know and that the customer is taken care of you're
17:54
always going to have situations where machines could be damaged in Freight or just whatever situation you may have and
18:01
it happens the difference between us and some of our competitors is we pick up the phone we answer that email and
18:07
immediately get the situation resolved if it takes shipping a new machine to the customer we do it immediately even
18:14
before the other ones return uh so again that's what we're all about is is making sure that uh our machines are available
18:22
to our customers because that's a challenge now as we continue to ramp up production and uh to make sure that
18:28
they're getting a high quality machine and that their expectations are being met if I'm a current business owner of a
18:35
freeze dryer and I have multiple different machines or I'm just starting out how do I know whether I'm supposed
18:41
to look at machines like you know H green that that's what I'm looking for
18:47
instead of purchasing something that's more of that um you know that Home Free
18:52
dri absolutely so you know like I mentioned early on every business any
18:58
smart business owner who wants to sleep good at night puts safety first okay so
19:04
the first thing I would say is make sure you got machines that are safe and not going to be a problem for you and your
19:11
workers and compromise your property but most importantly the safety of your
19:16
yourself and your employees so again ours are UL rated this is very important for that then once you start to look at
19:23
regulatory issues let alone from Cannabis and all the scrutiny involved there but if you're going to expand a
19:30
mom and pop business and really grow you got to look down the road a bit and if you're starting to build out your
19:35
facility and you got to deal with Fire Marshals inspections and the codes and regulations of your particular
19:42
municipality a lot of times which will require UL uh rated equipment uh you
19:48
know think ahead that's all what I always put first and I think most business owner should the other thing is
19:54
some of the other things I mentioned are is this machine going to stand up to the use the wear and tear that a business
20:01
application a commercialized application is going to entail so again a machine
20:07
that you're going to run eight hours a day five days a week you know uh are you going to be dealing with and then again
20:13
when you're running machines that hard whether it's a little replacement part or some service part that's always going
20:20
to be needed are you going to have a company that you can call and in a timely manner get that part so you can
20:26
repair your machine to get back and going are your machines going to have warranties on them ours are two-year
20:32
warranties on our zeros micro uh that again you can stand behind for your business so these are just some of the
20:38
real easy ones that I would say that aren't even technical really um and then you start to get into you know what are
20:45
you making do you want to be known as the best in what you're doing that's our philosophy so whether you're making
20:51
freeze-dried candy or you're making again prepared meals or any anything
20:56
else that you're doing do you really want the taste tast to be there the quality to be there uh you know the
21:02
consistency of every batch you're running uh these are things that are important because that's what's going to
21:08
set you out from your competitors and enable you to be successful in the market so these are the things I would
21:13
look for and these are the things that our machine provides how much is a zero micros and like how much capacity can it
21:21
do again with our machine the it is depending a lot on what you're going to
21:26
be running in that machine so are you doing candies uh what kind of candy are
21:32
you know are you doing liquids and then that's going to really dictate Your Capacity in the machine but
21:39
uh again it's it's a uh it's a lap uh excuse me laptop it's a desktop or
21:45
benchtop unit uh but again it's about 300 lbs this is a piece of equipment it
21:50
is something that that uh really uh uh you can tell just by the quality and the
21:57
workmanship it isn't something that's going to fall apart in uh uh 6 months or something again I talked about the
22:02
stainless steel shelving units and that U it's a high quality machine and U with
22:08
that uh it's a major investment for some people I understand and uh but you've
22:13
got something that's going to endure you've got something that uh again like I said with the USB connectivity as we
22:19
uh update our software make enhancements down the road you can do that again to
22:24
upgrade your machine real time so you know there's a a an investment in
22:29
anything and like you know the old saying goes you get what you pay for in some cases right we never we never went
22:36
out to to get the cheapest uh uh unit in the market we wanted to have uh the best
22:42
value for our customers and with that being said we'll go up against our comp competitors any day on a value level on
22:48
what you pay for and get with our machine versus our competitors the actual price of our unit is
22:55
$5,999 retail $6,000 okay and then the pump com coming with that yeah and then
23:00
we have different pump options as well the vacuum pump coming from someone who owns you know one of your competitors
23:06
and and multiple machines it's like you know I'm used to doing um you know
23:12
anywhere between 12 to 16 pounds of Skittles or 12 to 16 pounds of fruit for
23:19
that type of thing and I'm not saying that the price isn't worth it because I want you know one of the things that we
23:25
find in these machines is you sometimes there's just inconsistencies and there is a throwaway rate because uh it's it's
23:34
it's not sometimes it can be unreliable but not all the time so you know like
23:39
how much capacity for let's say you know how much fruit even if you have like a four the five shelf unit yeah so what I
23:46
would say let's go to the Skittles which is very hot right now our nine shelf unit is going to accommodate Skittles
23:54
perfectly uh our director of operations who's also the Willie Wonka holen science she makes all the freeze-dried
24:01
candy for our trade shows and everything that we give out and she makes Skittles all the time and uh she'll tell you
24:07
firsthand as well is you're going to be able not only to load considerably more Skittles in one batch with our machine
24:14
because of the Shelf trade now you've got tight shelves which are perfect for Skittles and not only you're going to
24:20
run more per batch you're going to get more batch Cycles quicker again an hour at most for a batch of skills and uh so
24:28
uh that's the one thing to consider same thing for like a banana slice that nine shelf configuration is perfect for
24:34
banana so you're going to be able to get more in because of the again that versatility with the trays uh and then
24:41
let's say you want to do something uh in a five tray you know the other thing is that we're seeing with the Cannabis
24:47
flour a lot of people people use our five tray one and people are putting one
24:53
pound of uh uh cannabis flour in that b at a batch at a time so again they're
24:58
getting quite a bit of biomass in a run uh and again that those runs are considerably longer there's a longer
25:05
more complicated uh program of settings for cannabis flow that process takes 24
25:11
hours to complete traditionally when you hang and cure flour it takes weeks or
25:17
months to do so now you've done it in 24 hours versus what could have took you a month or two but the main thing with our
25:24
uh machine it's fully programmable so you know again what we do is we provide
25:30
a white paper with all of our customers too which is what we call the freeze dry uh the principles of freeze drying and
25:36
it works through it's kind of again a 101 course on freeze drying talks about
25:42
again time temperature and pressure the three main uh factors for freeze drying
25:49
and uh what each of those controls do what what really is entailed in the sublimation process and everything just
25:55
give you a little introduction some sample recipes settings per se and then
26:00
what you're going to find is with the control of our machines that you don't have in our competitors you're going to
26:05
know even within different Vari and this goes back to like cannabis the different varieties of apples let's say or even
26:12
you know not so much with bananas but other vegetables or fruits there's different varieties even different crops
26:18
are going to have different moisture content different attributes to those uh different uh uh uh again apples oranges
26:25
whatever you're using so when you can program things you can really dial in your secret sauce not just to Apple but
26:33
the apples I'm using okay uh not just again whatever fruit or vegetable or
26:39
cannabis but again the specific one that you're using so you are able to just have much more control with our machine
26:47
which gives you an experience like again one of these scientific freeze dryers that you just don't have in these
26:53
standard home units and what that means at the end of the day is better effic efficiencies higher quality and product
27:01
uh you know at the end of the day are there ways to get in like how how do you research how do you approach Hall and
27:06
green science to kind of take a look at this is it um do you consults that people can can can get from your team
27:14
yeah so uh absolutely uh anybody can reach out to us uh by uh email by phone
27:21
through our website uh we're happy to uh address any specific questions or just
27:26
give you some general information about our product uh there's a lot of ways you can go about getting our machines we
27:32
work with some Distributors and some different spaces and you can also buy direct from us as well and uh again the
27:39
we're often at different trade shows primarily has been in the Cannabis uh Market but this year we're looking at a
27:46
couple potential more food orientated shows we might be exhibiting in as well
27:51
that's a great opportunity to check out one of our machines U sometimes we can even arrange for demonstration at our
27:58
customers or or that so uh but U I think you can also just go through social
28:04
media you'll see a lot of testimonials from our end customers and the results they're getting so um but the
28:11
information is there we love talking about our equipment and uh you know again there's a lot of literature we
28:16
share too it's just it's again it's about how deep you want to go down the hole because uh again our technicians
28:22
our Engineers they can get really wonky with this stuff and really dive in do the Deep dive into the details so you
28:30
know what we want to do is strike that nice balance because some people don't want to know all that they just want to be able to run their product you know I
28:36
had a call earlier today with a candy guy and he's like Mike I want a couple more recipes I I need some more you know
28:42
so again we're working with them in that but you know he doesn't want to know the details he just wants to be able to make
28:48
his product and that's great no problem and then we got the people who really want to know all the specifics these
28:54
again are more the scientific application people and we're happy uh uh to get into that discussion as well now
29:00
you talked to a lot of different freeze drying companies and different applications like what is the most
29:05
interesting company you've encountered let's just say you know in the past year we've had uh a number of interesting
29:12
customers on the scientific end that research end one University is doing
29:19
soil samples from Antarctica I thought that was kind of neat uh the other one
29:25
is doing uh uh Fe from animals so you
29:31
got both extremes here what's the applications for those they way above my
29:36
pay grade uh this again what they're doing it's something about um uh what it
29:43
was it was a type they again they were they were freeze drying the feces to then extract I think it was like I want
29:51
to say it was like hormones or something like that and I'd have to talk to my uh technical sales guy who did that that
29:58
sale but it was something wild it was just when I heard they were doing that I was like you know there you go yeah um
30:04
when we talk about our pumps you know one of the options for the vacuum pumps that we have is our Enos uh what we call
30:10
our en dry scroll pump it's a great pump uh you know it's a it's a oiless vacuum
30:16
pump so you don't need to you know change oil to that it's so silent most of our customers can't believe it's on
30:22
they have to put a hand on it to believe us that it's on uh but we sell you know in the cannabis different scientific
30:29
applications obviously with our freeze dryer and that but uh we started getting a lot of customer sales into the quantum
30:36
computer market and I didn't even know really what a quantum computer was uh
30:42
again I mean I'm not a technical guy uh you know I just thought it was kind of like your traditional super computer
30:48
some room full of servers or something and uh our customer was kind enough to let me check out their production
30:55
facility so I could understand why how they were using our our vacuum pumps and
31:00
these things look like chandeliers I mean unbelievable just a whole different take on that Tech I started to with the
31:06
help of my nephew who's a software engineer and that I started to learn a little bit more about all of this but
31:11
yeah they need very steady uh control of temperature when they go ahead and manufacture these and that's what they
31:17
use the vacuum pumps to create that environment and it was just you know mindblowing how this is all going to
31:23
work with AI in the future and that so again it's literally all over the place you know uh but whatever it is we love
31:31
it when we see customers who are really happy so you know the big cannabis shows
31:36
what we call mjbiz uh it's at the end of the year usually in Vegas it's kind of
31:42
the the big uh big party for our Market every year uh huge show you know
31:47
anywhere between at least 20 to 50,000 attendees big big uh conferences and
31:53
that but we had a lot of customers who came to us to show us their end product
31:59
you know and show us what they were making with our competitors and now what they were making and they wanted to give
32:05
us some you know they wanted us to see they were just and what really got us was just the pride that they had in
32:11
their product and what they were able to do and then the Gratitude towards us to help them get to that level of quality
32:19
that they really were striving towards and for us that that that makes it you know awesome well thanks Michael for uh
32:27
thanks for chatting with us and filling Us in on science awesome yeah my pleasure really nice David hey it's
