I paid three thousand five hundred
0:02
dollars to freeze dry two candies that
0:05
transformed from being chewy to crunchy
0:07
and you're gonna love it you're gonna
0:09
wanna watch this video that was a very
0:10
exciting intro let me introduce myself
0:12
my name is David I'm a freeze-dried
0:14
business owner in Idaho this channel is
0:17
for people who are freeze drying as a
0:19
business or looking into freeze drying
0:21
or maybe you're just looking to know
0:22
what all this freeze drying craze is all
0:24
about in this video I'm going to share
0:26
with you two candies that take the least
0:27
amount of time to freeze dry and are the
0:30
most popular for me they change from our
0:32
chewy state to a crunchy State and
0:34
that's caramel M Ms and your favorite
0:36
Skittles so just a little bit of
0:38
personal background about who I am you
0:40
might be wondering what's this guy
0:41
wearing a Cowboys jacket in Idaho I've
0:44
been a Cowboys fan ever since I was five
0:46
years old my grandparents sent us all
0:48
types of memorabilia and apparel while
0:50
we were growing up so I've just always
0:52
been a Cowboys fan I am not a loyalist I
0:55
love football I love the NFL I know
0:57
they're always going to lose in the
0:58
playoffs and they're probably never
0:59
going to reach to Super Bowl as long as
1:01
Jerry Jones is the owner I may be
1:02
waiting a long time for that but I'll
1:04
still be representing the Cowboys so I'm
1:06
filming today in my garage this is where
1:08
everything started because I was a
1:09
cottage food operator and I still have
1:11
this freeze dryer it's for my personal
1:13
use and also testing different things my
1:16
family and I freeze dry a lot of fruits
1:18
and vegetables and sometimes we freeze
1:19
dry candy because we have two little
1:21
kids and it's just great for food
1:23
preservation and saving a lot of food
1:25
waste this is going to be a pretty easy
1:27
video for candies because these are the
1:28
two fastest freeze drying candies that
1:30
I've found in terms of low labor to put
1:33
together and it takes the shortest
1:34
amount of time to freeze dry in the
1:36
dryer so let's get to it all right let's
1:37
get to the freeze dryer setting so if
1:39
you have version 23 or higher you have
1:43
the option to customize the candy mode
1:45
which just means you get to customize
1:46
the drying amount of time and the dry
1:49
temperature so we press customize and
1:51
what we're going to do on caramel M M's
1:54
and for Skittles I'm going to do it at
1:56
the same time we're going to go all the
1:57
way up to 140 degrees all only need
2:00
about two hours to freeze dry these
2:02
candies so press save we're going to
2:04
press start and that gives us 15 minutes
2:06
to start prepping the candy what I've
2:09
got here is I've got five trays and
2:11
that's the amount for this large freeze
2:13
dryer from Harvest right I've also got
2:15
this silicone mat because what I'm going
2:16
to do with caramel M M's is I'm going to
2:19
put each caramel m m into here it
2:21
actually ends up expanding as you'll see
2:24
after we get done with a cycle I like
2:25
having the individual caramel m m in
2:28
each one of these because it just allows
2:30
for the caramel M M's not to stick
2:33
together because I'm going to do another
2:34
tray for you to show you what it looks
2:36
like when you just throw all of them on
2:38
just like we do with Skittles so that
2:40
you can kind of compare the two and see
2:42
which one you might like to do so let's
2:44
get to putting these into here I usually
2:46
just like dumping a bunch on the
2:49
silicone mat and then I'll just take
2:51
them individually and put them into the
2:55
different molds so one thing if you're
2:56
not familiar with freeze drying or
2:59
you're not familiar with freeze drying
3:00
candy with chocolate is chocolate
3:02
doesn't really freeze dry because
3:04
there's not much moisture in it so
3:06
usually chocolate just ends up melting
3:08
and you don't have that kind of changing
3:11
texture but with the caramel m m there's
3:13
caramel inside and then the Chocolate
3:15
shell breaks apart what I do once these
3:19
break out and change their texture is I
3:21
actually let these freeze I either put
3:25
them in the freezer or I let the chamber
3:27
cool down after the cycle it gets the
3:30
chocolate kind of Frozen and that way
3:32
when I store them into the bucket
3:34
there's not a bunch of melted chocolate
3:35
in the bucket when I store these as you
3:37
can see here the silicone molds provide
3:39
a really good Organization for all the
3:41
individual caramel M Ms so now we're
3:43
going to do a tray that doesn't have
3:45
this mold all right so now we're going
3:47
to do caramel M&Ms without the mold when
3:49
you have them this close together
3:50
they're going to Clump up and you just
3:52
kind of have non-individual pieces for
3:55
your bags and the customers I I feel
3:58
like don't have like each individual
3:59
caramel m m to eat so that's why I like
4:02
having those molds because now when I
4:05
take them out of the tray and they're
4:06
done I have individual caramel M Ms
4:09
versus these are all going to stick
4:10
together which we'll show you that was
4:12
one bag of 34 ounces for caramel M M's
4:16
so that was one tray mold and then one
4:19
just scattered all in the tray so now
4:21
we're going to do Skittles and I want to
4:23
show you two different packs that I've
4:25
purchased when I go and buy Skittles one
4:28
is I buy the Skittles in these tubs
4:30
these are from Sam's Club or if you have
4:32
Costco you can get these now the total
4:35
ounces in this is three pounds six
4:38
ounces which is a total net weight of 54
4:40
ounces you can also buy now although
4:43
this is a wild berry bag you can also
4:45
buy these types of bags and I buy them
4:48
from a store that has wholesale this has
4:51
50 ounces in it and these bags right now
4:54
locally for me not the wild berry but
4:56
original is running about
4:59
10.98 they increased this past year
5:01
probably due to inflation and then these
5:04
these Skittles at Costco were running
5:06
about 9.78 they've got this seal on
5:14
we're gonna dump the skills on this tray
5:17
I'm gonna show you that this amount
5:19
right here a little bit too crowded and
5:21
the reason I know this for my me
5:24
personally is just like the caramel M Ms
5:26
they just get a little bit too bunched
5:28
up I don't like having to break apart
5:30
the Skittles after they're done freeze
5:32
drying and I don't like the clumps as
5:34
you can see with the tray that I just
5:35
did you can still see a little bit of
5:37
the tray but it's just a little bit too
5:40
full in my opinion We're Gonna Leave
5:42
This tray as is in fact I'm going to add
5:44
a little bit more to it I want to just
5:46
show you what it's like when you
5:49
overfill the Skittles like right here
5:51
this is just a single layer you might be
5:53
like well I just like maximizing the
5:54
tray I don't I don't like maximize the
5:57
tray to the point where they're all
5:59
stuck together and maybe they're double
6:01
layered it just doesn't come out right
6:03
all right so for this next tray what I'm
6:05
going to do is I'm going to do it my
6:06
style which I would recommend because
6:08
they come out and then they're just a
6:10
little bit more in individual pieces and
6:12
there's less that you have to break
6:17
so this is just the right amount and you
6:20
might be like well what's the difference
6:21
well as you can see you can see some of
6:24
the silver tray you're going to have to
6:26
kind of like eyeball it here but I like
6:28
this arrangement of the amount because
6:29
when we get it out of the freeze dryer
6:31
here soon you're going to see that they
6:33
kind of are not as bunched up together
6:35
some will be but not as much and that's
6:37
what I like better than the one we just
6:39
did so we're going to do one more tray
6:40
and then we're gonna start the cycle
6:51
okay all the trays are in the freeze
6:54
dryer but before we begin the cycle I do
6:56
want to invite you to watch a couple of
6:58
my other videos I just did a video on
7:00
bitter honey that was a really fun video
7:02
to do and it's in one of my top 20
7:04
selling freeze-dried items to freeze dry
7:07
it you can also see how I do Jolly
7:09
Ranchers and a couple other fruits so
7:12
check out other videos on my channel
7:13
alright that 15 minute waiting period is
7:15
done so all we're going to press is this
7:17
button it turns to green and says the
7:19
high temperature mode candy process is
7:22
ready to go and it's on we're gonna
7:24
close the drain valve and press continue
7:26
hey the two candies are done and I told
7:28
you it transforms them from a chewy
7:30
candy into a crunchy candy alright so
7:33
this is the caramel m m if you can see
7:35
the caramel pops and transform into a
7:38
crunchiness and then you have the
7:41
Chocolate shell out of that it's so good
7:49
brought to you from my wife keep them
7:52
refrigerated or frozen they are
7:54
fantastic they're way better than
7:55
keeping them at room temperature okay so
7:57
here are the two trays as you can see
7:59
this one right here is the tray that was
8:03
all clumped together and the reason I
8:06
said that I like using the silicone mat
8:07
or just the fact that there's just too
8:10
many on here is when you break it apart
8:13
it creates these bigger clumps as you
8:15
can see and I just prefer having little
8:18
bite sizes so that's why with this tray
8:21
with a silicone mat you get a single
8:24
individual caramel m m
8:28
and you can put those in the bag now
8:30
with these silicone mats it's fairly
8:31
easy to pop them out they actually pop
8:33
out right out of the little hole that
8:35
they're in and then you can put them in
8:37
the bucket that you want all right and
8:38
if you're not familiar with freeze-dried
8:39
Skittles Skittles pop and transform into
8:43
this this is the crunchy side of a
8:47
it's like eating popcorn but skills it's
8:50
delicious all right the Skittles are
8:52
done here's how the skills turned out
8:54
this was the tray that we put together
8:55
that had a little bit of spacing in it
8:58
and as you can see yes they're clumped
9:00
together but they're not as deeply
9:02
connected as you might think so they
9:05
easily kind of drop off and create
9:06
individual Skittles just like you got
9:08
out of the bag now this is the tray that
9:10
we had very little spacing on it's just
9:12
very compact you have to kind of break
9:14
apart the bigger chunks of pieces to get
9:16
those individual Skittles if you look at
9:19
this it creates a whole big chunk I
9:21
don't like having these big chunks I
9:24
like having individual Skittles just
9:26
like you're used to out of the bag
9:27
that's a wrap on this video These are
9:28
the two easiest candies you can do for
9:31
your freeze-dried business if you
9:33
haven't tried the caramel M Ms please do
9:35
they're delicious and I hope you enjoyed
