0:00
hey welcome my name is David I'm the
0:01
host of the freeze dry business Channel
0:03
and if you're not familiar with me I
0:04
live in boisey Idaho I run a freeze
0:05
drying business on the side of my
0:07
full-time job and I really love this
0:09
industry and one of the things that I
0:11
like doing in these Recaps is
0:12
highlighting the area that I live right
0:14
behind me is La Park Turf Bar and Grill
0:18
now it's connected to the lauis park
0:21
horse racing facility that used to exist
0:23
here in boisey Idaho in fact actually
0:26
it's not boisey it's called Garden City
0:28
Garden City is kind of this little Inlet
0:31
within the boisey and kind of Meridian
0:33
area squeezed in Ada County and it has
0:36
different types of laws regulations
0:38
things like that and in fact they used
0:39
to have casinos all along this street
0:43
called Chinden that's a little bit close
0:45
to here they also had a racetrack and it
0:47
was called the bah Park they had a lot
0:50
of different races running from May
0:52
through August it was a lot of fun to be
0:54
able to have something really unique to
0:56
this area now the bah Park and horse
0:58
racing doesn't exist anymore in Garden
1:00
City but there's a lot of history that
1:02
went on here and in fact if you're
1:04
familiar with the horse racing movie
1:06
called seab biscuit there's a jockey
1:09
there named Gary Stevens he's a famous
1:11
jockey that's won a lot of different
1:13
races for a lot of different horses and
1:15
he came out of this little baah park and
1:18
used to race here quite a bit to kind of
1:19
get his experience and things so look
1:21
him up also they used to have actual
1:25
slot machines in the bar and grill area
1:27
and the interesting part about these
1:29
slot machines is the state of Idaho does
1:30
not allow any type of gambling now they
1:32
have the Ido Lottery where you can do
1:34
scratch tickets they also have the
1:36
Powerball and the Mega Millions they do
1:38
have some pull tabs things like that but
1:40
there's no any gambling outside of some
1:44
uh Native American reservations that are
1:46
in the state so to get through those
1:48
loopholes the owners of this horse
1:51
racing Park to kind of boost up Revenue
1:53
because they shorten down the season of
1:54
their horse races they found that if
1:57
they bought these slot machines that
1:59
basically would run simulations at
2:02
random of past historical simoc casted
2:06
horse racing Races they would then be
2:08
able to program in the slot machines a
2:11
randomized like winner and a randomized
2:13
kind of slot that would then generate a
2:16
winner uh from the slot machines isn't
2:18
that crazy so kind of a fun personal
2:19
story is during my bachelor night we
2:22
actually went to the LA Bois Turf Bar
2:25
and Grill and played these slot machines
2:26
I didn't win anything but I remember
2:28
going here and it was so because they on
2:30
the little screen they had actual horse
2:33
racing it was a live like video of what
2:36
a horse race it could have been in
2:37
Indiana could have been in the 1970s 80s
2:40
but that's what you were watching on the
2:41
screen and then all the kind of random
2:43
numbers would populate on the on the
2:45
slot machine it was crazy well needless
2:47
to say the state of Idaho legislation
2:49
didn't really like that loophole so they
2:51
changed some laws and they basically
2:53
said you can't do that anymore and the
2:54
owner said okay well we're just going to
2:56
shut the whole place down because that
2:57
was a main revenue for our part and we
2:59
we can't really see the racing continue
3:02
so this actual laois Park that used to
3:05
have horse racing has remained dormant
3:08
for about almost 10 years here in Garden
3:11
City and what they're going to transform
3:13
it to that just actually got done with
3:15
the whole design is they're going to
3:16
make it a beautiful nature park for this
3:19
area it's going to include some like
3:21
natural types of inlets from the Boise
3:23
River that runs uh really close to here
3:25
and I'm actually going to go right now
3:27
and show you where kind of the Stables
3:30
are and everything like that used to be
3:32
so let's go over there yeah so right
3:33
behind me is where a lot of the training
3:36
areas for all the horses that were
3:39
living here during the racing days were
3:42
all right back here and the boisey green
3:44
belt actually runs right along where you
3:46
can see in the Fate distance the green
3:48
fence right along there and I remember
3:50
as a kid we'd be riding our bikes down
3:53
here and then we'd see all the horses
3:55
and see right here it still says race
3:58
license required now all this is going
3:59
to be torn down all this is torn down
4:01
because they're going to be putting a
4:02
really beautiful Park and kind of nature
4:06
place in this area it's going to be
4:07
absolutely beautiful well there you go
4:09
there's a little bit more that you know
4:10
now about boy Idaho I hope it's kind of
4:12
fun getting the taste of kind of where I
4:15
live if you're not familiar with boisey
4:16
I love learning about new places so
4:18
let's now get to the recap of the videos
4:20
that were posted on this channel all
4:22
right the first video that I posted was
4:23
episode 6 of my Vlog that I try to
4:26
capture as much as I can about my life
4:28
as a freeze dry business business owner
4:30
I do own a business here it's called
4:31
freeze dry Depot if you ever want to
4:33
order from me I've actually got my store
4:35
connected to my YouTube channel so you
4:37
can check out the products now in this
4:39
Vlog I shared about my journey of
4:41
signing on a new wholesale client that
4:43
was out in Wilder Idaho now a couple
4:45
things that I included in that Vlog if
4:47
you haven't checked it out is one I
4:49
walked through how I actually put
4:51
together my wholesale order sheet I use
4:54
Google Docs and I've used it since I've
4:56
started this business now if you need
4:57
something like this it's very easy and
4:59
simple for you to start generating
5:01
wholesale Sheets if you're not even
5:02
familiar with how to do wholesale I make
5:04
it really easy I've stuck with easy
5:06
myself for my business all you got to do
5:08
is go to the video description I've
5:09
highlighted there the wholesale line
5:11
sheet on Freeze Drive bus.com click on
5:14
that link then you're going to put in
5:15
your email and I'll automatically send
5:17
you the Google Doc link that you can
5:19
then file and copy and then reproduce
5:21
yourself okay now the other part of this
5:23
Vlog is you just seeing me go through
5:25
the motions of everything from the boxes
5:28
that I use to package up all the goods
5:30
and then my delivery to the actual
5:32
client and then I tell a little bit
5:33
about the client and their history it's
5:35
a family run Orchard that's out in
5:37
Wilder Ado so I was really thankful for
5:39
them to to sign on with me so check that
5:41
video out video number two that I posted
5:43
in June was I interviewed blue Alpine
5:45
freeze dryers and one of the co-owners
5:48
of that company if you're not familiar
5:49
that I have actual podcast I've got it
5:51
both in video form through the playlist
5:53
on this channel I also have it on Apple
5:55
podcast and Spotify podcast so you can
5:57
listen audibly to all of those episodes
5:59
but this one I talked to Cory Merritt
6:02
he's one of the three brothers that
6:03
started blue Alpine freeze dryers over
6:06
in St Anthony Idaho it's very close to
6:08
me I'm hoping to get there here very
6:10
soon and be able to do an actual full
6:12
video tour of their facility but Cory
6:16
and I talked everything from what makes
6:18
them different in the marketplace why do
6:20
they start freeze drying and start
6:22
developing a freeze drying business I
6:24
talked to him everything about his pumps
6:25
his electricity what type of food and
6:27
recipes he can do in the freeze dryer I
6:30
talked to him about what types of advice
6:32
he would give to entrepreneurs in the
6:33
freeze drying space so if you want to
6:35
know more about blue Alpine freeze
6:36
dryers check out that podcast I'll
6:38
include it in the video description you
6:39
can watch it via video form you can also
6:41
download it on Spotify and apple podcast
6:44
video number three is all about how to
6:45
make product labels for your
6:47
freeze-dried product I made this pretty
6:48
General because I use Avery labels for
6:51
all of my product I've used it since the
6:52
very beginning because it's very easy to
6:54
use now you can go to avery.com and you
6:56
can create your own account and then you
6:57
can create templates based on the size
6:59
of sticker and label that you're going
7:01
to use and that makes it really easy
7:03
because when you start adding more
7:04
product different types of candies
7:06
different types of fruits different
7:07
flavors all of that you're going to want
7:09
to easily replicate your product labels
7:12
so that one you can have the same type
7:14
of branding same type of uh description
7:17
for your product that type of thing but
7:19
then you can easily interchange the
7:21
ingredients and also the different types
7:23
of ounces and maybe even the allergens
7:26
that you might have for different
7:27
products so that's why I made this video
7:29
and I made it a tutorial where I
7:31
actually screen share my own templates
7:34
and then walk you through how to create
7:36
one it's very easy to use if you haven't
7:37
checked that out check out the video
7:39
description below because I include that
7:41
video in there and I'll also include it
7:43
in the thumbnail at the very end of this
7:45
video so that you can easily click to
7:47
that video and check it out all right
7:48
the fourth and fifth video actually came
7:50
back to back because I did my first live
7:53
stream on YouTube if you missed that it
7:55
was a lot of fun I had some trouble kind
7:57
of understanding where the chat was but
7:59
I'm going to get better at that and I'm
8:01
going to do another live stream here
8:03
very soon so make sure you hit the Ping
8:05
notifications on your subscription that
8:08
you have to my channel and if you're not
8:09
a subscriber hit the Subscribe Bell
8:11
right now and you'll be connected to
8:13
everything about freeze drying and
8:14
freeze drying as a business that's what
8:16
this channel is all about so when a live
8:18
stream comes up and I've notified you
8:21
that notification will go directly on
8:22
your phone you'll be notified you can
8:23
hop in I did a kind of a Q&A that was a
8:25
lot of fun so I'm going to do more of
8:27
those that was the fourth video but then
8:29
the following day I already had it
8:30
scheduled was my second part to
8:32
interviewing the owner of sweet potato
8:35
awesome but this episode was my
8:37
anniversary of speaking to Josh Kingdon
8:40
who's the owner of sweet potato awesome
8:42
back last year around the same time and
8:44
I wanted to talk to him about how his
8:46
business is going he recently purchased
8:48
HRC 100 freeze dryers from Harvest R
8:50
which can do up to 100 pounds a product
8:53
so I wanted to ask him how are those
8:54
machines doing what's the efficiency is
8:57
it doing better than what your previous
8:58
types of Freez dryer setups was now if
9:00
you're not familiar with sweet potato
9:01
awesome they freeze dry sweet potatoes
9:03
obviously and he's developed a really
9:05
specific process for how to cut up the
9:07
sweet potatoes he does it all
9:09
organically and we talk about that in
9:11
the first episode and then we also
9:14
follow up with that in this episode that
9:15
I just posted too so if you're wanting
9:17
to know more about entrepreneurs and
9:19
freeze drying check those episodes out
9:21
It's really informative and in fact that
9:24
first episode that I posted about Josh
9:26
and sweet potato awesome is actually my
9:28
fastest growing podcast episode so a lot
9:30
of people are liking it so check that
9:31
out now let's talk about the people that
9:33
I connected with in the freeze Dr space
9:35
that maybe you're completely unfamiliar
9:36
with or maybe you are but it's going to
9:38
provide you a foreshadowing for upcoming
9:41
content that I'm going to be coming out
9:42
with on this channel number one is I
9:44
talked to Brian over at the live life
9:47
simple retired at 40 YouTube channel a
9:49
lot of you probably subscribe to his
9:51
channel as well as mine because you want
9:53
to know more about freeze drying freeze
9:55
drying different recipes now he's
9:57
focused on everything freeze drying as
10:00
far as home use I'm focused more on the
10:02
freeze drying as a business type of use
10:04
and a lot of us have a lot of crossover
10:06
in that and I talked to him for probably
10:08
over an hour and a half one about
10:10
YouTube I talked to him about what he's
10:13
doing in his YouTube channel and it was
10:15
really nice to just be able to talk to
10:17
someone who's in this space who has
10:19
tried different freeze dryers equipment
10:21
all of that and one of the things I
10:22
gather from him is that he's very much
10:24
connected to people like you he has an
10:27
email list he has recipes he has a
10:28
cookbook book he has all types of videos
10:31
that you can search on his channel and
10:32
it really inspired me to continue going
10:34
with this YouTube channel because that's
10:36
what I want to be after eight years of
10:38
doing YouTube just like he has now at
10:40
some point I'm hoping to get together
10:42
with him in person because he's got some
10:43
connections in Idaho that makes it kind
10:45
of convenient for me to go and see him
10:47
and I hope that we can collaborate talk
10:49
everything freeze drying and it's going
10:51
to be a lot of fun now the second person
10:52
that I connected with that you may not
10:54
be familiar with is Tech Source systems
10:56
this company builds freeze dryers custom
10:59
for all of their clients and in fact
11:01
their freeze dry that they have right
11:03
now that you could maybe even purchase
11:04
is $130,000 but one of the things I
11:06
gathered from these commercial freeze
11:07
drant companies that I've been talking
11:09
to is there's a completely different way
11:11
to look at the purchasing of freeze
11:15
dryers and other types of equipment and
11:17
that's this that it doesn't necessarily
11:19
have to be a capital expenditure meaning
11:21
you don't have to come up with the cash
11:23
all up front and get a loan so that you
11:24
can purchase it outright you can
11:26
actually look at talking to your account
11:28
about making that freeze dryer as a
11:31
lease or financing so that you can use
11:33
it as an operating spense that's ongoing
11:35
some of you have really large freeze
11:37
drying businesses or maybe you are
11:39
hoping to get to that point and so
11:40
you're trying to find a way to meet the
11:42
demand of all these orders or maybe
11:44
you're trying to track down that huge
11:46
elusive client that's going to place an
11:48
order for 20,000 of your products but
11:50
you need the freeze dryers to do that
11:51
you need the packaging machines to do
11:53
that that's all something that can be
11:55
done through an operating expenditure
11:57
versus trying to outlay all that cash
12:00
via capital expenditure I've got so much
12:02
to learn on that front but just to let
12:03
you know that techsource systems is
12:05
another company they're based in Utah
12:07
just like Harvest Right and they
12:08
actually know each other very well I had
12:10
a really good conversation with their
12:11
owners and in fact I've got an upcoming
12:13
episode of the frozen assets podcast
12:15
Series where I'm going to be talking to
12:17
one of their Consultants Jean ligman who
12:20
actually has a lot of experience with
12:22
vacuums freeze dryers all of that and so
12:25
he actually has a connection with that
12:27
company so that's going to be a lot of
12:28
fun and I'm making more and more
12:30
connections with freeze dryer so that
12:32
you feel more informed about everything
12:34
that's out there as you scale your
12:36
business now the third person that I
12:37
talked to was e automation I talked to
12:39
the owner Josh and this is a company
12:42
that I met with back in March in Las
12:44
Vegas Nevada if you want to check out
12:46
the video that I posted about that I've
12:48
got it up here in the thumbnail but also
12:50
I've got it in the video description and
12:52
I interviewed their sales engineer at
12:54
the time there at their facility to talk
12:57
about what is packaging automation how
12:59
can it benefit you how can you make this
13:01
all make sense in a break even
13:03
standpoint so that you can afford to not
13:06
have to do as much labor intensive work
13:08
as we know we do with candy unwrapping
13:10
with packaging with all the types of
13:12
things that go into a freeze-dried candy
13:15
or fruit business all of that can
13:17
actually be automated so that you're
13:19
spending more time marketing advertising
13:21
meeting clients going to shows doing a
13:23
lot of the fun stuff that I know all of
13:25
us enjoy doing but we're still doing the
13:27
manual labor of scooping up
13:29
candy and ice cream and all that type of
13:31
stuff to be able to put it in the bag so
13:34
that's a really fun interview that's
13:35
going to be coming up as well in the
13:37
podcast and if you haven't checked out
13:39
the video about Eis automation check out
13:40
the video description below now hey
13:42
thanks for joining me on this monthly
13:43
recap if you want to see more Recaps
13:45
check out the video description or I'm
13:46
going to include more thumbnails of
13:47
those videos coming up next I'll see you
