0:44
to the live stream very excited because we have a guest on this week and we're going to be talking Expedition cruising
0:50
as you've probably seen so we will certainly start off by focusing very much on the Expedition questions I know
0:55
a couple of questions coming that are not Expedition and we'll get to those towards the end but let's get going I
1:01
want to bring in straight so as I said we're focusing Expedition and I'm very excited to have Martin on before I bring
1:06
Martin on just a couple of bits and pieces remember if You' got a question please write the word question at the
1:12
beginning so we know that it's a question because I'm sure there might be lots of chat going on also the reason
1:18
I'm doing the live stream this week is my video this week is around looking at options to do at Artica for Less uh so
1:25
it's a video that I did in conjunction with Martin of polar roots I'll get him to explain per in a second
1:32
um which is a specialist travel agency and he was very helpful to develop and I'll talk again about it later we
1:37
developed as part of that this uh comparison chart which looks at I think
1:43
it's 21 different uh cruise lines that go to Antarctica they also probably go
1:48
to the Arctic as well and we'll talk about that because that's can be downloaded I'll give you the link for that later but also through the videos
1:54
but let me bring in Martin hi there Martin how you doing hi Gary
2:00
good well thanks very much for joining so Martin maybe just to start um maybe you could just explain a little bit
2:06
introduce yourself um and talk a little bit about uh polar roots and and what
2:12
polar Roots is sure thanks uh thanks Gary so uh first of all I just want to
2:17
say uh it's a pleasure to be here I've followed the channel for a long time now so uh to appear is H is a is a real
2:24
honor so thank you very much for having me um I uh have co-found and director of
2:31
uh specialist Trav uh specialist travel agency that's uh polar roots and we specialize in Expedition cruising
2:37
primarily to the polar regions and and Beyond uh I've worked in sort of the sale of expedition cruises now for over
2:44
15 years so I've really seen the market develop uh particularly you know in the last five years or so as well um and
2:52
I've spent uh I've just uh come back from a cruise to Antarctica which signed off my 150th day at se on an Expedition
3:00
cruise ship so hopefully some good um expertise and and knowledge there uh for
3:06
for for everyone watching to help out with any questions regarding Expedition cruises and and yeah with polar Roots we
3:13
work with 20 uh 21 for Antarctica about 23 in total with with some specialist lines 23 Expedition Crews operators uh
3:21
for primarily the polar regions everything from you know small sailing ships of eight up to uh the maximum we
3:28
work with is is the ships that go from sort of 500 passengers with with Landing so everything that we work with there
3:34
must be Landings but typically as as you've said before Gary the the typical Expedition cruise ship size of sort of
3:40
between 100 and 200 passengers is is most common um and yes we work with we
3:45
work with um yeah over 21 operators uh so we got access to hundreds and
3:51
hundreds of itineries and and all sorts of destinations around the world and the one you just back from which I followed
3:57
was that that was actually a charter you was a whole po Roots polar Roots Charter um ship was it was 100 passenger I can't
4:04
remember about 100 guests well actually we no it was 66 guests in total so we we
4:10
went super small so obviously one of the developments recently in Expedition cruises is ships getting a little bit uh
4:16
larger um so typically you know ships between 130 and 200 passengers now so we
4:23
uh knew there was a bit of demand for you know an under 100 and well under a 100 passenger uh ship so so we H did a
4:30
charter on a ship called the mvw um and uh yes it was an amazing we did Antarctic Forkland and South Georgia um
4:38
and it was uh brilliant it was it was an amazing experience and and so great to you know we had nothing no group
4:44
Landings everyone could get off you know to it's six six or seven Zodiacs to get everyone off it was super quick and and
4:51
lots of time ashore um and yeah we were very fortunate as you as you said on the
4:56
social media we were very fortunate with the conditions so we had some uh two blue sky days in Antarctic Peninsula and
5:04
great weather in south Georgia as well and we also were incredibly lucky and and uh it still will be probably one of
5:11
my Expedition career highlights we actually got to set foot on Elephant Island which is obviously where
5:16
Shackleton and past that when never I've been just gone past it land yeah I mean
5:23
it was it was uh yeah it's it's incredibly rare to make a landing it's it's it can you can quite often get
5:29
zodiac Cruise there but because it's such an exposed piece of land it's it's a very difficult place but anyway the
5:37
the the sky aligned and and we made a landing there as well so it was yeah an incredibly special trip for me good
5:43
let's get the question there was a question I just spotted which I think Simon had made a question how do I get the video link I think Simon I don't
5:49
know if you're talking about this live stream hope you got the live stream hope you're now seeing it if you're talking about this week's video there is
5:54
actually if you're on um YouTube in the uh description notes for this live
6:00
stream there is a link to the video but it's also on the channel if you go on my channel um it's it will be there under
6:06
the video section but I will also uh there is a link there if you're watching the live stream on Facebook or on
6:12
LinkedIn I'll put the link there afterwards but uh it should be there on the channel so Martin let's get stuck
6:17
into the questions uh Lots coming in so there's quite a lot around um Fitness
6:22
and we we'll talk about that a little bit later what you can see where are some lines are saying but starting off with rosemary who is uh Rosemary's done
6:29
quite a few uh Expedition around the world quite exotic stuff often smaller ships sum of stuff you were talking
6:35
about um so he was always looking for kind of new itineries so she's asked the question are there any Expedition
6:40
cruises that go to Hans Island I must Adit I've never heard of it before uh which is can Canadian Greenland border
6:47
Pont had cruises that went there but I don't see it listed on their website anymore I guess Pont do have some quite
6:52
interesting things that they only maybe do once or twice so so offand Martin do you know anything uh that you can answer
6:57
on that one yeah so it's right up in the north and and what so I was sort of
7:04
probably I'm going to have to come back to Rosemary and look at this specifically because it's quite it's quite a unique place but it's right up in the north and so I was wondering
7:11
whether some Northwest Passage ones would call in a sort of Goku but it's actually sort of not on that on that
7:16
route now pon as rosem quickly uh says uh either last year or the year before
7:22
did a very Northern uh sort of Northern Canada into Northern Greenland itinerary
7:29
um which probably yes would have would have called in at H Island but it's quite that was quite a unique itinery it's not the sort of most common uh
7:37
tread path from um for most Expedition cruise lines for various reasons
7:42
operating and ice conditions I'm imagining up there potentially so Pont
7:47
aren't running that same one this year but what they tend to do Pont is if they've got a very interesting specialist one and it and it has had
7:54
interest they'll tend to run it every potentially every other year or every three years so I can make some in quiries with Pont to see whether that
8:01
that's coming back around in their program in in future um in future departures I know that a Expeditions did
8:09
quite a Northerly one um but I don't think Hans Island was specifically named
8:14
and obviously as you said before Expedition Cruise doesn't necessarily give names of places it will definitely
8:22
visit um but I'd be interested to see if that's going up that way so there's an a Expeditions one that I would probably
8:28
have a look at as well but that is one I'm gonna probably have to take away and come back to Rose if you come back to
8:33
rosem me I once Martin have thing I'll either connect you or I'll po it on to Rosemary great thanks for that so
8:39
there's a couple of questions here I'll bring them up both of them um Martin because they're sort of linked in a way
8:44
not quite but sort of link they're around Fitness so art Quest has the question I'll be 80 when I start my H
8:50
grutin Cru to Antarctica this November very nice any advice on what kind of training I should uh emphasize to be
8:57
ready I like she get they're getting a uh Expedition ready or skip the training
9:02
if fa of less trainer itinerary and then Megan has asked a question uh which is more about um disability I guess but how
9:10
do you fit how fit do you need to be to make an expedition Cruise worthwhile I have Emy CFS which means sometimes I
9:17
don't have much energy are there some lines better than others for disability um so Martin any you any thoughts on on
9:26
the terms of Fitness um overall for expedition
9:32
yeah so um I think with regards to Fitness I if you if you're the kind of person that goes walking and and you can
9:39
walk you know if you go walking in the countryside or in the in the Hills or the mountains depending on where you live you're going to have no problem uh
9:46
on on most Expedition cruises so even on more active Expedition cruises there will still be a choice of things to do
9:53
so that you can for example if you're not you know you could stay near the beach observe the wildlife you can
9:59
obviously being amongst the Penguins and and take it fairly easily and then there will also be choices to go off and do a
10:06
walk and depending on the size of the ship and the program it might even be that there's a medium walk option and a
10:11
strenuous walk option so and you can dip in and out of that as much as you wish so for for just is just talking general
10:18
fitness so you know if one day you want to do the strenuous hike the next day you might just stay by the beach and and
10:24
you can just mix and match that as you wish so I do think in terms of training I think if you um you know if you you do
10:31
want to be active I think you want to be able to do a walk and it's obviously also going to be over uneven surfaces as
10:37
well so you just sort of want to make sure you know for example take walking poles with you but someone like her to
10:42
Gren I'm not sure which ship it's on so if it's on the Fram it's about 20 sort of 30 40 people but if it's on the r
10:50
amonson or the nanson it will actually be sort of in the four four to 500s and
10:55
and H um tion or HX as they're now known have a a really wide ranging program so
11:03
I don't think there will be an issue of you sort of mixing and matching in what you want and then they also offer zodiac
11:08
uh cruises I know as a second activity and obviously that just involves sitting there taking pictures so I definitely
11:16
think it's worth doing some walking and getting your sort of general fitness up
11:21
um but then what I would recommend is that you pick the activities and if
11:27
you're not sure then go for the sort of easier activities and build up don't
11:32
don't sort of come out on day one and go let's go for the strenuous hike because some of those hikes are pretty uh pretty
11:38
strenuous so go sort of build it up and if you do the medium one you think that was easy then great go for the go for
11:43
the strenuous one next time and I think that's the way to sort of build it up all the ones I've been on you're right
11:50
there will say if you you step one is along the beach there'll be these penguins or SEALS or whatever stay along
11:56
the beach or near close by then there's plan b or is up to that level and then
12:02
for the Die Hard like the reactor ones that's and you right it's um so so you always get to see something and I guess
12:08
also depending on the arery there may be a lot as you're saying zodiac cruising stuff I mean in terms of the disability
12:14
the most I have two two of the trips I've been on there have actually been people who are wheelchair bound they've
12:19
gone often with their family and obviously they haven't been able to get out much but the Cru LS have always
12:25
tried to make sure that at one point they find a way of let getting them to stand on land um you know they obviously
12:31
when it's a very calm Bay or something but they have always they've kind of gone that way to make sure that even
12:37
people in wheelchair who can't do any of the the walking along the beach stuff they've at least touched land once um
12:43
and they've been pretty good at or they've taken them out on some of the zodiac cruising and stuff and I guess there advantage of the smaller ships
12:48
they they they will try and and and help so good it's where is if someone is
12:53
wheelchair Banner is worth this checking out because uh because you do want a cruise line that's actually going to do
12:59
that so we have had you know we know that there are better cruise lines that are more willing to to do that and I think just the other note on that is
13:05
that you do also have to appreciate that you will need to be sort of handled in and out of the zodiac and potentially on
13:11
an offshore that so that's the only other thing that I yeah it's a very it's a very physic yeah it's a very physical
13:16
kind of thing yeah yeah so I think that's the only thing but yeah you can absolutely do it and there are there are cruise lines that will certainly
13:22
certainly do that um do that for you but I think you the first question was they said they were 80 the oldest person on
13:27
my last qu was 92 and they were fitter than I were so is no obstacle yeah so's got a
13:35
question on uh what options are there to do the Northwest Passage are there are there many options or are
13:41
pretty limited because when like the N narrow of time yeah so it's definitely
13:47
during the summer uh just for the timing obviously for for the for the ice and the passage to be able to to get through
13:54
um and then you've got two kind of options you have got some cruises that will go into the Northwest Passage but
13:59
perhaps not make a full Transit and they'll come back out and they'll sort of go in and and sort of come back out and it becomes perhaps more of a
14:06
northern Canada with a with a sort of a northern beginning of the Northwest Passage itinery um and then you but you
14:13
then also have the full Transit and I think most people when they think of Northwest Passage are sort of uh
14:18
thinking about the full Transit but yeah so there are ships that go through I think you've got I mean HX go through a
14:25
Expeditions go through I think need to check Pon go through as well um so there
14:31
are there are more options seor as well Seaborn was offering one at one point yeah yeah yes I did yeah I did see
14:37
Seaborn in there as well um so there is but but it's normally only once once per
14:42
ship and and normally potentially as part of a repositioning over to I guess Alaska and and down that side so it's
14:48
normally only once um per ship the biggest uh common advice so with the
14:53
Northwest Passage it's generally about 30 days give or take a bit and that is actually one of the areas that we advise
15:00
considering a slightly larger ship so something like HX which they go through on the the nson uh or the or the amonson
15:08
because 30 days if you're on a small ship with one restaurant and maybe one bar and uh you know lectures uh it isn't
15:16
going to be like a regular Expedition cre to Antarctica where you're Landing twice a day there is a lot of miles to cover and so therefore there is landing
15:23
throughout the voyage but it's not going to be twice a day it's going to there are even going to be days where the the main activity is standing on deck and
15:30
and observing the the scenery so a slightly larger ship can offer you know
15:35
if you think of 30 days in the same restaurant the nanson and Amon for example have three restaurants and that just mix mixes it up a little bit um but
15:44
of course it then means when you actually make a landing it will be slower so it's one uh one area just to
15:49
consider that the the that that your ship will probably be more important than for example if you go to Antarctica
15:55
and you've got two Landings a day and and really your main focus is about potentially your main focus is about
16:00
being on land or exploring as much as possible but yes there's definitely options they do sell out very quickly uh
16:07
because the their program doesn't you know doesn't tend to be that that big um but yes there's definitely some options
16:13
that we can uh that we can have a look at for you and uh in terms of the two I think you've advise us before Gary I
16:19
would say if you're going to go do the Northwest Passage I would definitely recommend the full Transit yeah it sounds yeah it's one
16:25
that I keep looking at it's like yeah here's someone who's clearly watched the video and downloaded the thing so Dean
16:32
here um so and it's quite an interesting one because um so in that document that
16:38
I mentioned earlier which you can download let me bring that up just to remind people who've Jo so we' created this document here which you can is
16:44
splits all of the cruise lines into Ultra luxury luxury um premium uh budget
16:51
Etc and um El de spotted that actually World Explorer appears twice once under
16:57
Atlas And once under qu do you want to explain why why yeah yeah absolutely good spot
17:05
Dean I have to say uh so that ship basically operate is operating for
17:10
Antarctica for Quark um and it's uh operating uh for other times of the year
17:16
for Atlas plus I think Atlas still have it for this season although obviously now this Antarctic season's almost at an
17:21
end now um so at the moment that ship is used by uh by two cruise lines at
17:26
different times of the year it's not actually the only ship that gets used by two different cruise lines at the end of
17:32
the year different times of the year so for example um the uh sea Venture which
17:38
which is now actually changing this season but the sea Venture for Polar latitude is used by them in Antarctica
17:43
and it's used by Adventure Canada uh in summer so ships do sometimes move between operators um in terms of the
17:52
nuts and bolts of the ship obviously it's the same so you know that's that that in some ways is great but the team
17:58
obviously that are operating the Expeditions and how the Expedition is focused and how they sort of uh they
18:05
sort of get guests on and off the ship obviously that experience will be different depending on the cruise line
18:10
that is operating The Vessel at that time but uh to the quick answer is yes
18:15
it's the same ship is used by two different companies and actually Dean quar are I there's one of their ships
18:22
which they they they're swapping the world Explorer in for is going to Windstar um just as the side we we
18:28
talking about H and and uh H Expeditions just to um point out is that the
18:34
companies have split completely now and they're actually owned by different people so htin is owned by one set of
18:40
private Equity based in London and HX Expeditions is owned by a different set of private equity in London because I
18:46
just been doing a big excise on ownership and H I guess had some Financial challenges with everything I
18:52
don't know what quite happened there um and then they had different share owners who were private equity and they split
18:57
the two companies so now it's called hertin which is the Norway sellings and
19:03
HX Expeditions which now does the Expedition stuff um I think the management from what I read moved across
19:10
uh the management the actual operating team as it were are the same that St the same I stand yeah I think I think I
19:17
think the confusion with it has become is because hate because obviously the Heritage hate Jacks have sort of held on
19:22
to for a couple of years it been now sort of in a hybrid State called hack her and Expeditions which actually I
19:29
sort of understand because you know the teams have come across but I think it actually presents more confusing but I
19:35
believe they have now gone they are now hate Jack and then her to grutin is and they're painting their ships next year
19:41
as well so they won't look like her to grutin ships anymore so I think very quickly I think the HX will become a bit
19:49
all the website everything now it's very it is different you can see that Qui quite rapidly sort of differentiating L
19:56
in the question um any ant Artic cruises that go to South Georgia and also areas
20:02
that we can see the emperor penguins on the same Cruise so I guess um you South
20:07
Georgia not going to see emperor penguins emper penguins are right down in the South are there any that go to
20:13
the same on the same thing I I am you so
20:20
there there's a there's one that you could have a chance there's a couple that you could have a chance um but uh
20:26
one of them is the um p on shako the ice breakers ship um so the the shako runs a
20:34
wed sea Explorer and South Georgia itinery um which actually went on about
20:40
three years ago and we were very lucky we did see uh 12 emperor penguins in the wed sea and then we went to South
20:46
Georgia and obviously saw the Penguins up there um but we could very easily have not seen emps because the time
20:54
there is not when the nests breeding season and they're all together it was it just that we saw them
21:01
on a ice flow so we were quite sort of Lucky in that respect um also obviously depending on budget Sho is Pon Flagship
21:09
so it's also the most the most probably one of the most expensive
21:14
options yeah oceanwide um I have also seen I've been exploring the wed sea um
21:20
quite a bit and I don't know I'd have to specifically look if they've got a wed seat and South Georgia explorer that
21:25
could offer you the chance to see them my general advice if one of those two options is is not available or or
21:31
budgets not there is I would probably split those trips into uh because if you
21:36
want to see empan winds a couple of the uh operators so Quark being one um
21:42
oceanwide being another they run specific EMP penguin Snow Hill itineries
21:48
and what they do is they bring the ship as far as they can and then they use helicopters so it's the helicopters on the ultramarine or or the
21:55
atius has helicopter or takes helicopters and they they then helicopter you into
22:02
um the into Snow Hill to actually see the colony and that that takes place earlier earlier in the season that's
22:09
your only guaranteed well I mean almost guaranteed way to see emperor penguins really on that specific itinery and for
22:16
most other itineries it's going to be a bit of a chance of luck as to whether you see them or not so if emperor
22:22
penguins is focus then would go on a Snow Hill emperor penguin um specific
22:27
Expedition um if it's for South Georgia itself obviously you've got a multitude
22:33
of of uh cruises that go to Antarctic forlands and South Georgia and and any of those that go to South Georgia for
22:39
more than a you know more than a couple of days You're Gonna you're going to see uh plenty of King Penguins in south
22:45
Georgia and that the season as well South Georgia is so amazing oh
22:51
yeah uh Tom asking the question um had a great time on lindblad National
22:57
Geographics Galapagos Cruise how do their Antarctic and Artic Cruise offerings rate Pro and cons I haven't
23:03
been on limat National Geographic I've met people who have who speak very highly of them um and I've seen I guess
23:11
their ships quite I've seen their ship um endurance urance just got that got
23:18
that modern kind of uh bit like a Expeditions kind of thing so from your
23:24
perspective you know your clients and stuff how did they Rate liml National Geographic is the one that you recommend
23:30
to people and what sort of people do you recommend it for yeah so ly lindl National Geographic I think are probably
23:36
one of the most uh reliably reliable in terms of what they're going to deliver
23:42
in terms of their experience on board so if you had a great time in the
23:57
galapagus: example in Antarctica they they've got some quite new two new ships
24:02
uh over there whereas actually the the galapagus:
24:28
Association as well so that just adds a an extra element to things like the photography on board there'll be a
24:34
photographer from National Geographic which doesn't mean you'll come away with a load of National Geographic images
24:40
because obviously they keep them for themselves but it's interest they're interesting to talk to they're interesting for any tips and and tricks
24:46
and stuff that you should need so it adds a really nice interesting element to it as well but um Great Expedition te
24:54
Geographic if you had a great time the most reliable uh Brands I think
25:01
you'll find the experience in in the Arctic Antarctic excellent with them as well good you're you were freezing a bit
25:07
there but your audio's get was fine so that you were freezing a bit but we could hear your audio fine there it's
25:13
like so think hopefully people just stick with it because the audio is perfectly fine um so there was um this
25:20
is probably a yes or no question that I can give an Michael asking do you plan on booking a biking Expedition Cruise
25:25
just so you can compare them all I haven't got any plans to book a viking Expedition Cruise um I've seen the ships
25:32
which look very beautiful but they're also slightly a little bit um they are slightly bigger ships than I like I like
25:39
to go on the small small because I think Viking is at 400 you might know hand I can't remember how big it is is it 400
25:45
or 500 something so my understanding is just right so they would do they would have fewer Landings would they or fewer
25:52
Landing sites they can go to Just because the the the greater numbers is that right that be right yeah so Viking
25:59
is a softer I would describe Viking as a slightly softer Expedition but but
26:05
compensated by the fact obviously the ship has more in the way perhaps what you may describe as traditional Cruise
26:11
facilities obviously Viking is a bit of a niche um product in that respect but um yes you're probably realistically
26:18
going to get one Landing a day uh when you're down there in Antartica um and
26:23
that may only be for an hour maybe an hour and a half depending on how many how full the ship is and how many
26:29
rotations they have to do because obviously if you remember you can only have a 100 people on land at the same
26:34
time so if that ship is full at I think it's 380 I think you're talking four groups uh that need to be cycled through
26:42
they do um generally offer a secondary activity they have that sort of quite fancy boat that sort of goes up and down
26:49
the the sort of um the ramp the back U they do of some Scenic cruising off that
26:55
as a secondary activity
27:01
and so I kind of would recommend it if you are perhaps looking for a sort of if
27:06
perhaps if you come from from cruise and you're looking at Expedition and you're not sure whether you want to take the
27:11
full leap to to to to start sort of coming around in Zodiacs twice a day
27:16
then it could be a good option um but if you are looking at a sort of expedition
27:22
and you want to be doing you know two Landings a day then there is there is
27:27
definitely a sort of a some a con that you have to weigh up in on that particular ship it's it's going to
27:33
probably be one a day maybe an additional activity um so that yeah if there's pros
27:39
and cons and and I know people that that is enough you're going to get off the ship you'll being amongst the Penguins
27:45
you you then on the ship you're very comfortable and you've got some great sort of more more um Cruise like I
27:50
suppose facilities um but if if your focus is to be on land then personally I
27:56
would keep to under 200 and and go one that is going to give you the the possibility of two Runnings a day and
28:02
that would be my advice yeah I mean the ships look amazing I mean I was in once and the ships look beautiful and you're
28:08
right Advantage you have all the the more cruisy stuff they do with the the different choices of the dining and the
28:15
stuff so uh Ken I have um is asking a question which I do have quite a strong
28:21
view on going to Viking with to anarctica in November very nice uh trying to decide just to use our iPhone
28:28
for pick or take a large digital camera I know few people have asked 100% take your better camera uh I think you know
28:35
you will get super pictures with your iPhone but it will drive you crazy um that you can't get up close particularly
28:42
if you're seeing Wales your iPhone will you know because the whales will Pro may be quite far away but you know one of
28:47
the things if you look at my the video that my Antartica videos and also the one that's linked to this sort of um
28:53
live stream doing uh the best photos were taken with a camera where had a on
28:58
because you can get up you know close with the face of the seals um you know and also you know be in mind
29:05
particularly if you're on you have to keep certain distances away but you can still get really nice close shots so so you know on my last trip I went you know
29:11
lots of lots and lots of people using iPhone and then they would see my pictures and they're like oh my goodness I wish I'd bought a camera with more of
29:18
a zoom now obviously as the zoom gets better on iPhone that helps a bit and stuff but I would absolutely take a
29:23
better camera with with with the zoom so it's more about the zoom to be honest than than than than anything else
29:29
because obviously the quality in iPhones pretty good you got like the iPhone 16 but but I would strongly recommend and I
29:34
did see travel agent Sarah making some comments there the other thing to bear in mind um quite correctly is make sure
29:40
of course you got gazillions of uh SD cards because you will take 10 billion pictures and make sure you got lots and
29:46
lots of batteries because batteries do run down quite quickly in the in the cold and also just if you're on one of
29:52
the cruises where you're going out you know if you're on bike if they're doing the Zodiac thing and you're coming back and doing Landing you know you may not
29:58
have time to charge batteries so just make sure you're kind of kind of loaded up with with those two do you I guessing
30:05
you agree with that Martin you I whole heart yeah I whole heart
30:10
agree the other thing I you don't get out of an iPhone or or or whatever mobile phone is I don't think you get
30:15
the detail level that you can get out of a digital camera like if you see those really stunning pictures of a penguin
30:20
head for example and you've got the detail of the feather you just don't get that detail out of out of um out of
30:26
iPhones now it's not to say that if you're not into photog could I
30:35
would a huge hugely expensive digital camera just to go if photography is not
30:42
your thing um but but if you are kind of asking the question and you're weighing
30:47
up whether to take the camera or not then take the camera definitely yeah I mean I think you don't need a massive
30:53
Zoom unlike if you're going to the Arctic at my experience you know there because distance from polar bear you
30:58
need a really big Zoom so I do take I have because they're very expensive but I have one because I bought it when I
31:03
went to Arctic I wouldn't go out and buy a big zoom lens for your digital camera but if You' got some some Zoom that
31:10
makes a big difference but you don't need the big Zoom the big Zoom that would be a lot and even on my last trip
31:15
um some of that I knew had actually rented a big zoom lens and they hadn't uh they they hadn't used it they didn't
31:22
use it at all I just noticed Martin's actually dropped out of the the I guess maybe his Wi-Fi dropped um but hopefully
31:29
he'll he'll come back in um so Fraser brought Fraser up great to see
31:34
you I'm so delighted Miami so Fraser um you know Fraser from Fraser at C he was
31:40
due to fly on Friday from Heathrow to Miami of course those I think most
31:45
people know he was completely and utterly closed down um and he was
31:50
managed luckily to go this very convoluted route um via um Frankfurt I
31:56
think it was so I was really pleased to see that you made it so Martin is back um so you got booted sorry
32:03
Gary your Wi-Fi is sort of freezing lot so I guess You' probably had a had a funny uh connection so hopefully your
32:09
back and whatever so um Sarah was saying actually by the way also Martin that um
32:14
Hans Island uh she thinks Albatross Albatross can can do that as as well so
32:22
but you and you're going to come back to us for the question that um thing so
32:27
let's have a look so KY um how does ponant compared to Silver sea or Seaborn
32:32
in the ultr CATE Gary did say the food is not great and it's very French so it's good to understand how they compare
32:40
um maybe I'll start on this one Martin because I've been all three haven't been on Seaborn turn but I've been on
32:46
Expedition I mean they're all very very close in reality they're all luxurious
32:51
they all have great ships and as M was saying earlier you know I haven't been on uh comant shako I've been on there
32:57
more sisterships things I mean in terms of the food I'd expected pan to have incredible food you know being French
33:03
and and whatever and the food was just okay to be honest when I was on Seaborn but I did the Kimberly the food was kind
33:09
of okay but I think they know that and have addressed it um but they are very very similar so a lot of it comes down
33:15
to to preference I mean you need to bear in mind if you're going on pant in my experience anyway you may have 80% 90%
33:22
of the ship could be French so you just need to be comfortable that you're going to be in a more multi lingual
33:28
environment obviously silver sea and Seaborn there it's in English now if you have a bigger group on so for example
33:33
when I was on Silver sea recently feels not that recent but they had a big Chinese group on so they brought they
33:40
had some specific Chinese uh guides on to then sorry Expedition team to take
33:46
them out so if they've got a big enough group they will C that but it's pretty much in English so you need to be very
33:51
comfortable what Pont did is they would split out on my particular one I think there was 15 English speakers most of
33:57
part of a big group so they would run uh separate lectures for us in English and
34:03
in in French to the French group separately however I have been on others where where if it's a much smaller group
34:09
they may just do translation I don't if that's your experience is as well but I did know that on they told me on some of
34:15
their smaller ones if there's like three or four English speakers they will translate you know rather than do
34:21
separate lectures so you just need to kind of that's one thing to consider um but they they were great I
34:28
personally like really like silver because they've been doing Expedition for a long time they have Great Expedition team um but they're all
34:35
they're all very close a lot of it hinges around I guess personal preference uh the the thing that I like
34:41
about Seaborn is their two ships are all new silver he has Silver Cloud and
34:47
silver other one which older than of course they have the Endeavors which is newer so it's important to choose the
34:53
right ship again panana has the older sister ships and they have the newer one so it's also you know you also a lot of
34:59
comes back to the ship experience as well because I think you're going on Silver SE on uh endeav is much nicer
35:06
than going on Silver sea and Silver Cloud so it's it's a lot of kind of that This ship's important is there anything you wanted to add or or anything you you
35:13
do or find it your clients find between pant silver SE Seaborn or you direct
35:19
certain people towards one of those three yeah I think I think the um with
35:26
Pon I think the the one thing that I would say with Pon um because obviously you're right it is
35:32
a mainly French Cruise Line and there is going to be uh split language if you like now I think for Antarctica
35:38
specifically generally they normally have enough English speakers on board and what happens is they actually just
35:44
you get an English program and the French speakers get a French program and it's almost like you just sort of
35:49
coexist actually uh within the S but you you don't I haven't we haven't had experience of people having translated
35:56
lectures in Antarctica or all the Arctic to be honest but if you go somewhere more spe if you go to one of their more
36:02
special you know a destination that's perhaps not quite so big in the UK speaking Market markets then yes you you
36:09
could end up with with getting what you want for me the big thing with Pon is their ships are capped at 199 passengers
36:15
which makes them a category one ship and that means that it's two uh two grou two
36:20
rotations if you like for Landings and therefore I think out of the three
36:25
silver sea and Seaborn and I think Pont is the cruise line that gives you perhaps
36:31
a a more active and perhaps more time on Shore whereas silver sea and seore now I
36:38
think excluding the silver and deor their ships are over 200 in fact I think some of the silver sea ships are now 270
36:45
I think the Seaborn is 250 something um so you're now into the potentially if
36:50
that ship is running full you're into three rotations per Landing so they still uh advertise two Landings per day
36:58
but you may if it's a full ship be down to sort of 45 minutes under an hour because you've got three rotations to do
37:04
in a 3 to four hour slots um so I think if if being on land you know if the
37:10
exploration side is really key then I think Pon on capping it ships at 199 does have a significant Advantage I've
37:16
traveled with pom myself I know obviously that you have as well Gary um
37:22
I was lucky to be on the Sho which was which if you want the most ultimate if you want the ultim luxury ship then then
37:29
the sho I'm afraid is it but obviously that's one ship and the majority of Pon
37:34
is is out of the sister ships which are also very nice uh I think your comments about the food are fair I think I
37:40
thought it was good you know I've had I've had dinner on on the ships before it was good um but yeah I think because
37:46
it's sort of French you maybe go with slightly elevated expectation which sometimes I think leads but for me we we
37:53
work quite closely P we have lots of great feedback about it I think for
37:58
Antarctica and Arctic you're generally gonna be pretty safe that there will be a number of British people sorry
38:04
english- speaking people on there um but but it's a consideration also I tend to
38:09
find pont's fairs a little bit lower than silver sea and Seaborn uh particularly their early booking offers
38:15
and they're also very good for solos I think uh out of the three for solo passengers their deals are very good as
38:20
well so there are some big pluses uh but yes it is something to consider that was
38:26
a good that was a good link into the question from Sherry it was the solo supplement because certainly um you know
38:33
pant certainly when they launch uh I normally see pretty solo supplements so
38:39
are there any other lines that you find are pretty good with the no solo supplement I guess based on my because
38:45
I've done all of them solo it's normally been early season end of season uh and it's Pont and silver SE have sometimes
38:51
had them some haven't had them I I got a Seaborn which had Kimberly once but that was they were doing it because I think
38:56
Kimberly was they just launched K wasn't that busy but if people were looking for solo deals what is their best way in and
39:03
there's another question a little bit later with someone talks about the sharing cabin option of driving price down but maybe we'll talk about solo
39:10
first and we'll come back to that later so good cruise lines for me for solos is pom uh I think they have a lot of good
39:17
solo deals I think uh silver sea uh can have solo deals but not normally until
39:23
it's a bit closer to the time and it tends to be quite specific whereas Pon tend to have very good deals when they
39:29
early release so that's probably a good one to look at AE Expeditions um now they've capped their ships at 136 now
39:36
offer 10 solo cabins per ship per Voyage um so again if you're if you're into
39:42
early booking then um that would probably be another one to have a look at as well um Quark also have solo
39:50
cabins on the ultramarine although the ultramarine is probably the highest uh price point of of their three ship
39:58
um so there's three there's there's sort those are three places that I would direct someone to have a look at but
40:04
from our perspective and sort of but we we often get we know where all the solo
40:10
deals are because different Cruise Lines will release solo deals at different times and we know where they all are so
40:17
um whether it's with ourselves or whether it's with uh your you know another agent I think that is where an
40:23
agency can probably um come into its own and that they will know where the solo deals are at the time of
40:29
inquiry um because yeah you know it it's something that's getting
40:35
better I suppose but still probably isn't where it should be in terms of solo pricing I think but uh yeah we we
40:41
know how to Haag laor is another one they tend to have 25% so solo supplements um that's another one that
40:47
we tend to have a look at quite frequently for solo Travelers so I think an agency can come into their own there
40:53
by looking at what's actually available but those four uh p on AE quark and Haag
40:59
Lloyd are probably four to have a look at that I know do have some solo which I think that's right because I think when
41:05
I did the have I glow through you to the Canadian Arctic and stuff I think that had I think it was that was that was a
41:10
solo and there was a couple of solos on that so so with the solo deals Mar is it because basically there's so few of them
41:17
that they would tend to release those through agents rather than advertise them because often know with with the big lines I always say to people like
41:24
just you know if you follow if you subscribe to the email newsletters you'll often find if solo deals are
41:29
coming out like you know Crystal for example is doing lots of solo deals and they just pump those out through their kind of Market email and new with with
41:37
Expedition do they tend to sort of not you know blast out an email they'll tend to work through agents with solos is
41:43
that why you saying you kind of know where they are more I'm just people want to keep up with Sol like Sher wants to
41:48
know where the solides are is it best to then be working with an agent I think so yeah the problem I
41:55
think with Expedition is the capacity of the ship isn't it because the inventory is obviously a huge amount less and so I
42:02
think what tends to happen I think is um I think when it gets to I I I'm not
42:09
sure the exact Theory but I guess it must get to a point where they're looking at the occupancy for the season
42:14
and if it's perhaps not quite where they want it to be then they'll not then they will perhaps encourage things like Solo
42:20
solo sort of solo deals and things so we tend to find that it sort of they they
42:25
or they tend to come in some at different points um but the the sort of
42:31
cruise lines we've mentioned are kind of quite reliable for examp you know as I said AE now have 10 per Voyage so you
42:38
know as soon as that season's released there's 10 solo cabins now that are available um but yeah other you know
42:44
there are there are plenty of cruise lines that where we where people will be paying 25% or less solo supplement but
42:50
it's not something that I could say if you go and check it today I know it will be there so some sometimes there bit
42:57
it's not and I think you know I think regardless of the agency that that you book through you you shouldn't pay any I
43:04
mean certainly with us you don't pay any more than you would pay the cruise line so having someone looking at all that for you who knows the market and knows
43:10
where the solo deals will probably save you a lot of time and even if and if you inquire today and there isn't a solo
43:17
deal available you you can leave the inquiry with them so that if something comes out they can then Rec contct you
43:23
afterwards so um but uh but yeah we we we deal a lot with solos and and you
43:30
know very rarely does someone need to pay over 25% unless it's a specific very
43:35
you know for example that um emperor penguin Snow Hill Island itinery probably isn't going to be solo deals on
43:42
something but but apart from a few things it's uh we can normally do pretty well for solo
43:48
travel so let's move on um to a couple questions uh around kind of the the sort
43:55
of the impact of the environment and stuff it's from Stein valin and he's got a couple of questions bundle so I'll
44:01
pull up the questions and we'll focus on because he's got two questions built into one I think so the first question is any of the lines that we we talk
44:09
about the 21 lines I guess and have the best environmental commitment we'll come to the money thing separate because
44:15
youve got a follow-up question um based on the our experiences how quickly is climate change affecting the scenery
44:22
think of doing a short one earlier or more complete one a few years later okay so from your perspective
44:27
what what what is your what are you seeing or hearing or what is your views
44:33
on terms of are there any lines that have a better kind of environmental commitment my understanding is they all
44:38
have to follow the out rules but I don't know that for sure you'll know better um
44:43
and then what impact do you think it's having on scenery and and what's kind of what's the general thing thinking in the
44:50
community because obviously as well as Polar Roots you run the I think you've run the expedition
44:57
network is that that's yeah the Expedition Cruise network yeah which is which is just gives I'm the chair so
45:03
it's a it's a u B2B organization so I guess just from viewers perspective is B
45:09
but uh it means I work with uh more Cruise Lines than than just we deal with at polar Roots I guess is probably the
45:15
the main benefit um in terms of environmental um that you're absolutely
45:22
right so anyone any operator that goes to Antarctica uh has to be a me should
45:27
be and it's a voluntary thing but Mo but all of them that do Expeditions are members of aato and aato do I think a
45:35
very a great job at regulating to make sure that obviously um the ships are
45:41
going in a responsible way that you know things like Wildlife is uh respected and minimum distances are observed they've
45:48
been great um when circumstances have changed and things have need to be put into place and they've got a way of
45:54
getting that out and and getting action break quickly um so I think that looks after the sort of environmental concerns
46:02
that most people would have going to a destination like Antarctica and and for
46:07
the Arctic for example AO is a is a different organization but but you know principally they do um similar things in
46:15
in for the Arctic as well um so I think that looks after what I think most people would be concerned about um
46:22
interestingly most could one of on your video you mentioned about the big cruise
46:28
lines where you won't get off at all they they are not members of IO interestingly and and on my recent
46:33
Voyage we I won't name the cruise line but we turned up at our Landing site and there was a large cruise line sitting in
46:39
the bay um and uh we we had to radio them to move uh and they only moved once
46:46
they decided they were done so it was quite interesting just to see if that had been an iato member there would have been a a regulatory uh sort of push back
46:54
on that but anyway that that's that's beside the point um terms of cruise lines that are at the Forefront of it so
46:59
all all me all Cruise Lines going to Antarctica will follow ioto regulations uh and that covers I think most that
47:05
want to know but those that are at the Forefront there would be two for me the first would be ha Jax I think they've
47:11
done some they're the biggest one of the biggest cruise lines and I guess with bigger Cruise Lines you've got bigger
47:16
budgets which means you can you can spend the money to lead the way in things uh to do with sustainability that
47:22
um that cost money essentially so they were one of the first cruise lines to B single use Plastics throughout their
47:28
entire operation from obviously the the the drinks in the bar even through to the single plastic use in the kitchens
47:34
and and Beyond uh they're currently testing electric zodiac operations uh
47:40
you know that's another thing that they're doing they've got a A New Concept for a ship with zero emissions
47:45
so and they have an incredible uh onboard Science Center that uh goes on
47:53
on all of their ships but particularly on the nanson and the amonson and they do do some great work there as well for
47:58
Citizens science as well so I think they are probably one of the sort of leaders
48:03
of of things and and very often things that happen there tend to filter down to the rest um and then the other one for
48:09
me would be AE Expeditions or Aurora Expeditions if you're in the states or it's AE in the UK and Aurora everywhere
48:16
else um they are the first B Corp certified Cruise Line um or Expedition
48:22
Cruise Line um and that means they've been through a very rigorous um
48:27
process I guess in order to achieve that bort credit creditation and I think that
48:32
I'm I think that they are the first cruise line to achieve that status which means that sustainability sits at the
48:38
the very Forefront of of what they do uh where I think a potentially have the
48:43
edge is because their ships are smaller and you know it feels 130 feels better
48:49
whereas obviously HX ships are a bit larger and and the Amazon and nson are are up to four four to 500 people um
48:57
which again is that more softer Expedition side but those would be the two that I think are probably leading the way if you like but I do think all
49:04
all me all members of IO um look after those environmental credentials very
49:10
well um I just want this is a sort of a question I I um which is a little bit
49:16
further down when we're talking about environment so Anthony's asked the question how do you feel about lines that use noisy helicopters in sensitive
49:23
areas potentially disturbing Wildlife personally I rarely surprised that people do it but
49:29
I'm sure it's very popular but it was interesting I know in silver sea bought Endeavor from Crystal they got rid of
49:35
the helicopters um and and partly because they build more cabins as well but they also didn't want to use it but
49:42
I guess there's a few that use them quar Scenic uses them can't remember who else uses them so I I think I'm very
49:48
surprised that even within the even iart allows them to use helicopters but um I don't know if you have a view or you
49:54
don't want to comment I I think we'll probably agree with you a little bit I think they are they are
50:00
regulated um by IO and they are only allowed to fly over uh areas where um
50:09
that they have if they're going to fly over Wildlife it has to be at a at a height that I guess uh is not disturbing
50:16
to the wildlife that's on there um and as I said we've as you mention for example oceanwide and Quark have those
50:23
Snow Hill Island um itineries whereby need the helicopter you can't get
50:28
snowhill without a helicopter so there's a sort of purpose I guess to that as well um for me the big I think there is
50:35
I think there is an environmental consideration um but you know I I think that that would probably be looked after
50:41
by aato in its operation but for me it's the landing of the helicopters on and off the ship you know and that that is
50:48
actually if you've got a balcony underneath the helipad uh you're going to know about you're G to know about it
50:54
I did I did watch a video I think it was on Scenic and was like first of all it looked kind of scary cuz the landing bear was really small but I remember
51:00
thinking like yeah it just for me one of the magical things about Antarctica is just that quietness and the the peaceful
51:07
and it's so you know seems pristine and quiet and then you got the helicopter going it just seems I mean I'm sure it's
51:14
incredibly beautiful um because I've seen some of the videos from stuff I just feel like I'm just really surprised
51:20
it's it's done but I guess it's like yeah I don't know it's a
51:26
for me as they say um I wouldn't choose an Antarctic cruise on a helicopter
51:32
myself I think if if it's because you want to do a helicopter I think uh yeah I wouldn't choose a g on that basis but
51:38
yeah you You' covered it Gary so we didn't actually quite answer start Stein Val M's question so in terms of this the
51:45
scenery I mean um certainly when I've been on board both the Arctica an
51:51
Arctica I mean obviously there's a lot of talks around the impact in the different regions of climate change and
51:57
we get shown a lot around you know the ice spread and stuff and I think I saw some in the Press they were talking
52:02
about the ice this year again for couple of years in a row is smaller than it was but it is kind of changeable and
52:08
obviously you've got the massive um enormous um iceberg that broke off and
52:14
is now kind of stuck outside South Georgia I mean it's it's hard because I've only been within the space of a few
52:20
years but from from your perspective but is it is is the scenary changing a lot I
52:26
mean is it noticeable uh if you were going to go like now in five years time are people
52:32
seeing a difference um is it is it that Dr I know when I went to the Arctic when we went to Sal I mean you could see that
52:40
I mean the guys on the ship were telling us here's my picture from when I did my
52:45
contract five years ago here's from three years ago and here's today you could see you know the the Retreats of
52:50
the glaciers um in anartica is it the same are people seeing the difference I
52:55
think I think it's less obvious there is definitely effects and your your guides and and your Expedition team will be
53:02
able to show you um but I think it's less obvious to probably you know us
53:07
that are going because Antarctica it's you know having just come back uh there's still incredible
53:15
ice incredible icebergs everything's covered in snow and yes there is some difference in in glaciers but I think it
53:22
I do think it's less uh obvious but your guide will tell you and be able to show you some instances of of where where it
53:29
definitely uh has changed I think it is more obvious in the Arctic um you know
53:35
with spard in particular obviously a lot of spard if you're going anything from sort of mid June and onwards uh
53:42
obviously there's a lot of um a lot of uh rock you know rock rock and and it's
53:48
not all snow covered um from sort middle of June onwards and then I think it's more Stark where you can see the valley
53:55
that the that glaciers used to sit in and where they're sitting now and and but that's obviously also there's many
54:01
parts of the world that have that same story if you like um the other thing that I think with spard is the sea ice
54:09
so I remember when I first started um Expedition cruising 15 years ago there used to be a real um you used to only
54:15
circumnavigate fard much later in the season because quite often the SN the
54:20
sea ice would prevent a ship being able to fully circumnavigate and and and these days you can circumnavigate Spar
54:28
pretty much from anything from mid June onwards uh so that that's that's an effect that I've noticed the other
54:34
effect that I have um that I did discover this time um there's two uh in Antarctica where there is a bit of an
54:40
effect the first is AD Deli Penguins um are moving further south in the
54:45
peninsula um and when we were on this Voyage we only saw a deli Penguins once
54:51
and not many of them actually there was there was a Gen 2 Colony with some ad Deli in it and was told that's because
54:57
the Adelis who uh basically live on snow and ice have moved further south um so
55:03
again that could be um a reason to perhaps do a voyage that goes south of
55:08
the Antarctic Circle um just to sort of give yourself a better chance of of seeing that and the second effect I have
55:15
seen is less seals on Ice flows I remember the 15 years ago on my first
55:20
Antarctic creu there was seals on Ice flows everywhere um and this time there there was still some seals was on I but
55:27
but certainly nowhere near what I remember I remember there used to be absolutely everywhere so there's a
55:33
wildlife effect a little bit but equally you know um whales currently uh are are
55:39
having an the populations are they think up to and around what they were before
55:45
the whale po uh before um whaling started um and definitely this Voyage we
55:51
saw whales everywhere and uh and that's a great uh that's a in fact it got to
55:57
the point where which sounds awful but people were when there was whale sightings people started to want to know
56:02
how far away they were that is I mean that's a great that's a great story I have seen a
56:09
wildlife change I think in the scenery it's less obvious in Antarctica but in the I remember there was a talk we had
56:15
to talk about that I remember the talk about the Peng that were showing up penguins are having to move further and further like down I think you're right
56:20
that does this is actually about the Arctic um Elanor are there any Cru lines
56:26
you recommend in the Arctic where you may see Nal Beluga Etc do you have any
56:34
so I've been to the Arctic a few times and I have never seen a naral whale so
56:40
uh I am desperate to see a Nale whale but I'm starting to think that a whale with a a unicorn uh a unicorn Spike may
56:48
be something of myth but so I've never seen one but northern uh Northern Canada
56:53
uh I guess Northern Greenland uh is the places that you want to go for that I do know people who've seen nwell whales so
57:00
obviously they they they do exist but uh um yeah Adventure Canada as a as a local
57:05
specialist are very good up there Quark have got a great program up there Pon as we've already mentioned AE uh so yeah
57:12
nor get get as North as you can uh in in Canada I think for the best chance of
57:17
seeing nals and believe because when we went on that when I went on that Haack Lloyd um Canadian Arctic and Greenland
57:23
some of the some of the the um in uh settlements that were quite up north
57:29
they had the they I guess hunted n and they had the for skeleton if that's the
57:35
right word word for those but we didn't we didn't see any no no but I mean like even early on in this last
57:43
trip we saw quite a lot of whales and it was quite encouraging when we went to uh
57:48
grifin where they were talking about you just the what it was thousands thousands thousands 70,000 W something and then
57:55
the the talk about just how rapidly uh the whale population is is rebuilding
58:00
which is which is pretty pretty exciting um so there's a couple of questions
58:06
before we run out of time uh there was a couple of questions on some packing bits so I'll just pop those up um Larry's
58:12
asking the question can you bring telescoping metal hiking SS on Cruisers I'm guessing he's talking about Antarctic Cruisers but maybe not do you
58:19
need to pack and check like certainly you can bring them on and all the ones have been on but a lot of the cruise
58:24
lines have them as well uh as well um yeah yeah I um check with the cruise
58:31
line uh but I also know um hiking sticks people like their own as well um but yes
58:36
you you absolutely can take them you will dip them in the um disinfectant solution as you will dip your boots in
58:42
as well as anything um that touches obviously touches the the ground um but yeah absolutely you can you can take
58:48
them if you like your own but yeah if you're going with probably anyone mid-market and above you you might find
58:54
they have them on board already um anyway I know um Haag Lloyd they even have them in a special cupboard in your
58:59
in your cabin as well so right right and then the question to some the layers thing Simon I'm planning to use my
59:05
skiway plus under layers I mean that's the key thing is under layers in some of my other videos Simon I've got you get
59:13
to see me dressing and undressing not completely but I start with the underlayer but I mean you're right the
59:18
layers so I always wear the the um I guess long johns as we call them and then I would wear like sort of trousers
59:26
over that and and um like sort of a sweatshirt thing and then lers and then
59:31
pretty much every does every um Cruise Line give you the the you know the big
59:38
jacket um uh no that there is some that don't you
59:43
definitely need to check uh it is actually interesting because a lot of there's been a bit of push back more
59:49
recently about people who obviously are if you get a jacket every time you go very often these jackets are brilliant
59:55
when you're down but when you you come back I mean perhaps if you live in Canada you might uh and parts of America
1:00:01
you might get use use of them um but yeah is worth checking there are definitely cruise lines that don't
1:00:06
include them um but in terms of uh Simon's question uh skiing basing your
1:00:12
packing on what you would do for skiing is is a great uh a great way to pack because if it's blue sky and and sunny
1:00:18
you might just need the Parker jacket with a with a simple layer underneath but just like skiing if the wind gets up
1:00:23
and a white out comes down then it gets cold and windy very quickly so yeah layers layers is uh and basing it on on
1:00:31
skiing is a is a great way to pack but I mean your point is a good one Mar I think the Cru probably should look at
1:00:37
that whole Parker situation because you know whil it's very nice getting a brand new Parker but I've I've been on like an
1:00:43
like Arctic even on Silver sea alone I've been on on two ant
1:00:54
arcticsooner basally like it's got silver over so we kind of basically much
1:01:00
dump dump I haven't taken them back so I feel like on ha Lloyd they
1:01:05
gave you one but you didn't keep it I can't remember but it just feels like you they they're fantastic but I'm not
1:01:11
sure you really need to I I I strongly recommend if you get
1:01:17
given a Parker jacket by a cruise line and it's not and it's a gift it's not a obviously if it's on loan you need to give it back but if if you get given a
1:01:24
uh given or gifted a Parker jacket by the cruise line and you know you're not going to wear it again give it them give
1:01:30
it give it to them back give give it back to them before you get off the ship uh a part A partly because they can use
1:01:38
them elsewhere so I know that some of the cruise lines um give them to say local schools in Aire or I know that
1:01:44
I've seen some gear some agencies that use that have gear rental uh they they
1:01:50
will take them uh to to to rent them basically out to future people uh but even if they're not part of that program
1:01:56
I think that giving them back to the cruise line you know shows that actually
1:02:02
you know that you need to do something with this and do something and do something with it responsibly whereas yes you're right you bring it back in
1:02:07
your suitcase if you've got space and then if it sits in your cover and it's just going to be disposed of that love is a waste so exactly
1:02:14
exactly like Rosie was saying around um like rose because I was mentioning earlier Rosie before we talking like
1:02:20
rosby has been on like she's saying she's been on 10 different she been on 10 Expeditions got 10 different jackets
1:02:25
and it's like it seems crazy like they keep doing that so we have charged through I think we've answered pretty
1:02:31
much all the questions um we didn't get to answer any of the non uh non Expedition questions but next week I
1:02:37
will be back next week and I can answer the non Expedition once Martin thanks so much for joining just remind everybody
1:02:43
um so it's Po from Polar I've left a link in the the description here um just
1:02:50
a reminder just going bring a few bits up so um we whoops helps bring the right
1:02:56
thing up uh this is a video which um Martin helped me with uh working which
1:03:01
is live on the channel now uh which just I think it's called Antartica without for L without going broke it gives you
1:03:07
some tips on how to overall manage and get the price of expedition cruising T
1:03:14
Artic down then also there is that download uh which again I put a link there it's tips travis.com poolar which
1:03:21
Martin worked on very kindly and it looks at those 21 lines it looks at the ships you'll see it's got uh all sorts
1:03:27
of things like rating from luxury Adventure do they have solar cabins do they have solar sharing how many people
1:03:33
in the Expedition team facilities lead prices etc etc and then also on there's the details of uh of Martin's uh of Po
1:03:41
Roots there which I guess is also important I should probably mention is um although you're UK based you can uh
1:03:48
do bookings for for us and can you do Canada as well or yeah and you got
1:03:54
you've got a number there on the on the document there with with that so that's great so Martin thanks so much for
1:04:00
joining I really appreciate you giving up your time hope people are saying they had a great they found it very helpful so that's great um so thanks very much
1:04:07
again um everybody for joining and thanks very much Martin thanks Gary thanks
