0:01
four must-see sights and attractions in
0:04
the 800 year old city of Turku in
0:07
Finland hi I'm Gary beverage of tips for
0:10
travelers join me as I take you on a
0:12
journey around four must-see sights and
0:15
if you're ever in Turku in Finland it's
0:17
a beautiful city it's a very old city
0:20
and it really is quite something to see
0:22
it's the oldest city in Finland at over
0:24
800 years old although most buildings
0:26
are relatively contemporary as the city
0:28
suffered many fires into the mass of one
0:31
in the 1820s which pretty much destroyed
0:34
the whole place it was briefly the
0:36
capital of Finland before Helsinki took
0:39
on that role the first site is toku
0:42
castle this is the most visited
0:44
attraction in the city and it started as
0:46
a fortified fortress and was added to
0:49
and extended over the centuries the most
0:51
significant part is in the 16th century
0:54
when the swedish prince john and his
0:56
bride ruled the region for seven years
0:59
over its history it's been a fortress a
1:01
palatial home and court a warehouse a
1:04
barracks a prison and now it's a museum
1:07
the walk and talks of the castle
1:09
transports you through centuries of its
1:11
life as you climb around the twisting
1:13
stairs and hallways you come across
1:15
ancient rooms filled with intricate
1:19
there's even an ancient old church
1:21
filled with religious statues and
1:24
there are numerous temporary and
1:26
permanent exhibitions of items linked to
1:29
there's gorgeous renovated halls and
1:32
rooms with grand pillars and it even
1:34
waxwork recreations of life in the
1:36
cartilage in the 16th century there's
1:38
lots to see here and so make sure you
1:40
allow plenty of time to do it justice
1:43
the second attraction and real must-see
1:46
is the beautiful turku cathedral this is
1:50
another popular and must-see sight like
1:53
a castle it's another ancient site with
1:55
origins almost as older the city it's
1:58
actually Finland's national shrine and
2:00
the residence of the Archbishop of
2:02
Finland the huge Tower is over 100
2:05
metres high and the cathedral runs
2:07
services in multiple languages it's also
2:09
an important venue for music
2:11
concerts as well as its religious role
2:14
inside it's very impressive it's got
2:16
vast towering vaulted ceilings columns a
2:19
huge beautiful organ a stunning altar
2:23
and then various areas dedicated to the
2:25
significant players in the city and in
2:27
Finland's history many important figures
2:30
are buried within the cathedral itself
2:32
it's a gorgeous place in stunning
2:34
grounds and a definite definite must-see
2:38
the third sight is the river or this is
2:41
something that you should spend a lot of
2:42
time walking along the focal point in
2:45
heart attack is this beautiful river
2:47
aura that runs right through it the city
2:50
itself developed along the banks of the
2:52
river and today it remains a place where
2:54
locals and visitors gravitate to it's
2:57
got walkways filled with flowers stroll
3:00
along there's lots of cafes to sit and
3:03
relax that you can even take boat rides
3:05
along the river itself these large ships
3:08
moored along the banks and these act as
3:10
bars and restaurants so in the evenings
3:12
after work and on the weekends people
3:15
are drawn to the river aura and they
3:18
fill the area creating a real vibe now
3:20
the river aura is also important because
3:22
this is where many of the major events
3:24
of Turkey to take place so for example
3:26
when I was there the tall ships racers
3:28
were in town they visited took a number
3:30
of times so the river is very important
3:33
in terms of the social life of Turku my
3:37
fourth thing to do is the SS Yuka Pekka
3:40
this is a great and very unique activity
3:43
so another must do is to go on one of
3:45
the lunch or dinner cruises on the old
3:49
Yuka Pekka it's something of a Turkish
3:52
institution and you cruise out along the
3:54
river hora you go past support plus the
3:56
ferry terminals and you head out into
3:58
the archipelago now the archipelago
4:01
consists of about 40,000 islands of all
4:04
sizes it's a very beautiful area this
4:06
grand summer houses there's boats and
4:09
there's lots of different islands which
4:10
you can either visit for the day or you
4:12
can stay on now the SS Yuka Pekka it
4:15
takes you out to get a taste of the
4:17
archipelago for a few hours you're a
4:18
meal included it's a great experience
4:20
I hope you find that helpful that's
4:22
giving you a sense of this beautiful old
4:24
toka 800 years old lots and lots of
4:27
history it's a very stunning place to
4:29
visit I hope you found that helpful if
