Well, for sure we're not going to be allowed to show this on the video
0:04
And this does not belong into this kind of store, but they don't seem to care here
0:08
My name is Janek and I'm an honest guide to my city I love, which is Prague
0:13
And many tourists come to our city and they like to buy and bring home some nice souvenirs
0:18
So today we're going to go souvenir hunting, but not for nice souvenirs, but for the most hideous ones
0:24
For the ones that we're kind of ashamed that we sell in our city. I know we're past COVID and we don't talk about vaccination anymore
1:00
but if you want to get some John Som vaccine antivirus, you can get here
1:06
But if you're a fan of AstraZeneca, there you go. So, guys, we did some crazy shopping here in Prague
1:13
and we got some bizarre souvenirs that we found. Let's kick off with something easy here
1:19
And that is this pink thing with the astronomical clock on it
1:26
This looks nice. The astronomical clock in pink. Let's take that. And now you may wonder, is it just a pink round thing with astronomical clock
1:35
No, it is a portable comb with a mirror. So you can finally comb your hair and look at the astronomical clock at the same time
1:47
Oh yeah, much better. Also, astronomical clock. Reminds me of my good times in Prague
1:53
We will also sell this video here, so you will sell it in the store
1:58
The main reason we bought this pink thing is just to show that it doesn't really matter
2:03
what thing it is you can stick whatever branding, whatever city, whatever building on it
2:09
In this case, it's being sold in Prague so there's Astronomical Clock. The Astronomical Clock in Prague is its own designated souvenir shop and if you know how
2:17
the clock works, you will understand that they actually stick this picture onto this sideways
2:22
because whoever was putting it on, you know, put the one on the top, which would make sense
2:27
but he apparently doesn't know how the astronomical clock works. If you don't know that either, you can watch our video about it
2:36
Not only the astronomical clock is being printed on souvenirs in Prague but also the sign Prague the name of our city And you can buy a little you know fridge magnet with the sign Prague
2:47
But then once you look at the magnet, you discover that the city on it is not Prague, but Kutná Hoda, which is a completely different city
2:56
Now for you as a foreigner, you may not recognize it at the first glance because, I mean, there's some godical church in the background
3:03
There are some statues. So it's like, yeah, that does look like Prague
3:07
So that makes sense. But for a Czech person, if we look at it, we right away recognize that it's a different city
3:13
When we showed it to the shop owner or the woman working there, she was laughing about it
3:18
And she said, I didn't even recognize it because I've never been to Kutnáhora, which is the city, portrayed it here
3:23
And believe it or not, this was not the only magnet that was showing a different city and had the sign Prague
3:29
We also found magnets from the city of Pilsen, where the famous Pilsner beer was born
3:35
And there was a picture of their square and there was a sign Prague
3:39
And if you're wondering who made this mistake, we actually looked at the back and we can see that a company from Hungary, Budapest, makes these
3:46
And it's made in China. We can buy some laseňské oplatky But they have the Nobel more fan
3:52
So we'll buy 80 We have that Speaking of other Czech cities besides Prague
3:59
We have many spa towns like Karlovy Vary or Marianské Lázně And these towns are not only popular for their spa
4:07
But also for their wafers Which are called laseňské oplatky So if you visit one of these towns
4:14
You want to buy it as a souvenir In Prague we don't have spa but we do have the spa waffers
4:19
So you can buy waffers from Prague that are the spa waffers
4:25
that usually you buy in the spa towns. Clearly says from Prague
4:31
But if you look at where they were made, they were made in the spa town of Luhacovice
4:36
We're trying to wrap our heads around this. I mean, the sign should say waffers bought in Prague
4:42
not from Prague, because the town they're from is four hours away
4:47
I just, I don't get the idea behind this. Well, dude, they taste like they're from Prague
4:56
They taste bad. The next souvenir we got today is also on the bizarre scale
5:08
but you can actually acquire it for free. And it's here in my left back pocket
5:14
and it is these expired Belusian rubbles that we got for free from a scammer I mean he literally threw it in front of us So if you know the story you know what going on If you don make sure to check out some of our older videos
5:27
because that would make for a nice souvenir, no? Why don't we? We can
5:31
We look for the most bizarre souvenirs that are sold. Do you have any tips
5:36
Next up, some dirty stuff. Now, imagine if you could buy a toilet seat cover with Prague on it
5:45
Well, you can't buy that, but you can buy a keychain. That is a toilet that has the seat cover with Prague on it
5:53
But why? Why? No, I mean, seriously, why? You know, in Prague, they got toilets and they got seat covers, man
6:01
So they turned that into a souvenir. Anyhow, Honza, you found it
6:05
You're going to put it on your keys and wear it. I'm unfortunately going to have to put this on my keys
6:10
and now this kind of tells us or gives us the idea of what most of the souvenirs in the touristy
6:18
center are all about and that is naked dudes or naked women in this case you can't really see the
6:24
guy's naked because he's in a big barrel but once you pull the barrel off he shoots out what
6:32
he shoots out what happens to be his you know a guy just gave me a really weird look man he should
6:39
scene. Now, it may not be a problem to sell these kind of silly little souvenirs in the stores here
6:45
but when we went around the corner, we actually found a shop that was selling like actual very
6:51
large sex toys. And these can only be sold in stores where kids are not allowed to enter
6:57
yet they were just selling it there and they didn't really care. And I was wondering if somebody would actually go to that kind of store to buy a sex toy. And then we thought about it
7:04
with Honza, and it's mostly just things that, like, the stack parties that come to Prague
7:09
just buy kind of for fun, and I guess then they just, like, toss it away
7:13
I don't know, but it was kind of weird to see it in a store sitting next to an ice cream and a bottle of water
7:17
Now, there's also a few things that we didn't buy, but are sort of an issue in terms of souvenirs
7:27
especially for locals or Czechs, and that is mainly matryoshkas, the little Russian dolls
7:33
Czechs are not really big fans of those including me and that's mainly because they come from a
7:39
country that was occupying us for a certain period of our existence but to be fair there are not that
7:46
many stores that specialize in the Russian dolls. I mean there's one around the corner and there's
7:51
one over there but the one over there and another one over there actually do sell the dolls but
7:56
they more American than Russian because most of them are like NFL players and baseball players and basketball players and American actors and music bands So we actually talked to the store owner and he said
8:09
yeah, we hand paint them in the Czech Republic and we've been doing it for many years
8:13
So it's kind of funny. When we asked him why so many different players and teams and different bands, he simply said
8:34
well, I want to please everyone who enters my store. Now that I have understanding for
8:39
The one souvenir I will never understand why people buy and I will not accept it being sold in the city center of Prague
8:47
are hats with Soviet symbols on them. Tourists do really buy them, and they wear them around a city in a country that was occupied by Soviets
8:58
I don't think they're aware of that fact, so usually when I see them, I tell them
9:03
I usually tell them, look, I mean, I may not really have an issue with that
9:07
but somebody who's older, like my parents, would definitely not be happy seeing that around
9:13
Now, to be completely fair regarding the souvenirs we found, we were cherry-picking for these bazaars
9:18
we asked most of the store owners we like hey what's the bizarre things you have around and
9:23
they pointed us to them most of the stuff that's being sold in these souvenir shops we're okay with
9:29
and you're going to be happy with you know buying a little magnet that you're going to put on your
9:33
fridge and if you happen to buy this one i mean you're going to have two cities from the czech
9:36
republic it's a buy one get one free speaking of souvenirs if you want to see good souvenirs and
9:43
not only the bizarre ones maybe the ones that we like to get with hansa when we go abroad so we can
9:48
give you some recommendations of what to get in Prague. Honza likes to buy food when he goes
9:52
abroad. I usually collect beer coasters. So let us know if you want to see an episode like that
9:58
Write it in the comments and stay tuned. Subscribe for the future episodes from the lovely city of
10:03
Prague that we live in. My name is Janek. Honza is behind the camera and I'll see you next week
10:07
on another episode of The Honest Guide. And don't worry, I will not be wearing a hat in the future
10:15
episode because I have my new Orloj astronomical clock comb. So I'll comb my hair
10:24
And in the end I always teach you Czech words. I'm going to teach you how to say a wafer
10:28
In Czech a wafer is oplatka. Oplatka is a wafer. And if you want to say a wafer from Prague
10:35
you're going to say oplatka z Luháčovic. A wafer from Prague is oplatka z Luháčovic
