Hello and welcome to Prague. We are under one of the main highway bridges, under the main highway
0:05
that is in Prague, and there's this traffic sign. Do you know why the traffic sign is here
0:10
That sign is there, six kilometers away from here, so that the city could get rid of touristic beer
0:16
bikes on this square. This sign creates a zone where it's illegal to ride in on a bicycle that
0:23
is wider than 1.2 meters, which these beer bikes are, and that's how the city wants to stop them
0:29
from entering the city. And there's hundreds of these signs all around the city. So I guess you
0:36
figured now that this episode of The Honest Guide will be about bizarre, useless, and signs that
0:42
nobody follows here in the city. And there's a lot of signs in the city. Believe it or not
0:51
but even this area was affected by the mass tourism that's happening in the center of Prague
0:56
And that is proven by this sign that prohibits entrance on a Segway
1:02
The official name of the sign is your personal carriage device. And there is more than 600 of these signs around the city of Prague
1:10
600 of these plus 600 of these. And you may be wondering, why is there a sign prohibiting Segways on a highway
1:19
Well, the reason is that if you're creating a zone, you have to put the sign on every single entry point there is to the city
1:26
or to the zone, which creates some really bizarre signs around the city, which you're looking at
1:33
right now This one is my favorite But believe it or not there are more bizarre and pointless signs around the city so let go look at them Oh that actually a good sign You can click that one
1:50
We've moved to the city center of Prague, and we would like to show you some useless traffic signs, because they're pointless
1:56
Let me show you an example. We're standing in front of a crosswalk, five meters in front of a crosswalk
2:01
which means you cannot legally park your car there. There is also a yellow line on the road, which means you cannot park there
2:07
And also, if you would park there, you wouldn't leave enough space for other cars
2:11
Legally, you have to leave three meters so cars can go by. And on top of all of this, there is this traffic sign that is saying the exact same things that I've just mentioned
2:20
And on top of all of that, people still park here. So I think the sign is pointless and it doesn't need to be here
2:27
And just from where I'm standing, there is 47 different traffic signs
2:31
and I think many of them are useless and pointless and I will show you more of them
2:38
Oh look, parking spot is free, another car can park in. Another forest of useless traffic signs according to me is right here
2:50
There are these two signs, actually three, four, no stopping nor standing
2:54
but I believe that legally you can't stop nor stand here even if the sign wasn't here
2:58
because you cannot stop on a road unless you leave three meters of space for
3:03
another car to go by. So, useless. And don't forget that with every sign there's
3:09
also a pole and in this case there's also a pole for the garbage and a pole
3:13
for the lamp so it's sort of a holy trinity. So I guess if we remove the
3:17
sign it will be only a holy double They survive without the sign
3:31
We're on a square in Prague and there's more than 30 different traffic signs
3:35
on this little square. Just to put that in comparison, there's only 27 cars right now
3:39
And in some extreme parts of the square, each parking spot has its own three different signs
3:46
that describe who and when can park there. And just on the square
3:51
there are six times three traffic signs that only tell you that the parking here
3:56
is for residents only. I'm no expert here, but isn't it possible just to put one sign
4:02
on the beginning of the square saying, this square is for residents only
4:06
and you save five times three signs? And if you think there has to be signs
4:11
there has to be law and order, otherwise people would be parking everywhere and illegally
4:15
Well, people still park everywhere and illegally. Signs are not going to stop them from doing that
4:20
And I don't blame them. I'm just saying there's no equal between signs means everybody's parking correctly
4:26
Nope. I was pointed out to this traffic sign by the Prague tram drivers
4:34
It's a no stopping or standing sign. And the reason it's here, so cars wouldn't park here because then they're blocking the way for other cars, which would normally be here
4:41
But in this case they have to be on the tram tracks which then is blocking the proc trams and they are stuck in traffic
4:52
The point of that sign is so that cars don't stop or stand here
4:56
Well the city cops don think so so they rather boot the car so they stop and stand here for as long as possible
5:11
One of the bizarre traffic signs that I'd like to mention is the one behind me
5:15
probably the highest traffic sign there is in Prague. Why is it so high, you ask
5:20
Well, because the city kept moving it up because crooked taxi drivers used to climb up on top of it
5:26
and cover up one of the words on the sign, changing the meaning of the sign so they could legally park here
5:32
So whenever they climbed up and put a sticker over it, the city put it up higher and higher and higher up to this position
5:38
Also, there's black color on it, black paint, because at one point they couldn't climb up high enough
5:44
so they just threw an axe filled with paint on it. Bizarre, huh
5:56
One of the reasons we made this video is actually a fan sent us a photo and he pointed out that he can't even see churches and sites overall, these traffic signs that are in the city
6:07
And also quite often people point out that there's so much graffiti in the city, but nobody really talks about so many signs that they're everywhere
6:15
Well, I think today we showed you that there can be less signs because many of them are useless and many of them are just bizarre
6:22
That's it from today's Honest Guide video. My name is Janek, there's Honza behind the camera
6:27
You can subscribe to our channel, which will make us happy, and we will show you more signs and more people waving at the camera in Prague
6:34
And a Czech word at the end is značka, which is a sign. Značka also means a brand, but if you want to say a traffic sign, you can say dopravní značka. Traffic sign. Dopravní značka
