Celebrating Black History Month Black History Month is a time to celebrate, learn, and appreciate the rich history and contributions of Black individuals throughout history. It happens every February in the U.S. and Canada, and in October in the U.K. (because, apparently, history needs different calendars too). Why Do We Celebrate Black History Month? Well, once upon a time, history books weren’t exactly fair. They left out a lot of important Black figures. So, in 1926, historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History started Negro History Week. Eventually, in 1976, it expanded into a whole month because, let’s be real, one week was not enough.
