New Orleans Snow - A Rare Southern Wonder
New Orleans Snow - A Rare Southern Wonder When you think of New Orleans, the first things that likely come to mind are jazz music, Mardi Gras, and maybe some of that spicy gumbo. But snow? That’s not exactly what this lively southern city is known for. Yet, on those rare occasions when snow does visit the Big Easy, it’s like a surprise guest at a party — unexpected but warmly welcomed. Snow in the Land of Beignets Let’s be real for a moment. New Orleans isn’t exactly the North Pole. The city’s subtropical climate keeps things balmy most of the year, so when snowflakes actually make an appearance, it’s kind of a big deal. Locals rush outside in their mismatched winter gear (seriously, who in New Orleans owns a proper pair of snow boots?), and suddenly, every yard turns into a photo op. One memorable snow day happened in December 2008. It was the kind of day that made you wonder if the Saints had won the Super Bowl early. Schools closed, people made snowmen the size of garden gnomes, and social media (or what existed of it back then) exploded with pictures captioned, “Y’all, it’s snowing!”
