The International Crane Foundation: A Towering Effort to Save Cranes If you’ve ever seen a crane, you might have thought it was a tall, mechanical thing used for construction. But in the animal kingdom, a crane is an elegant bird that could teach even the most sophisticated human a thing or two about grace and poise. And guess what? There’s a place dedicated to saving these magnificent creatures, and it’s called the International Crane Foundation (ICF). Located in Baraboo, Wisconsin, the ICF has been working tirelessly since 1973 to protect these incredible birds. With only 15 species of cranes in the world, these birds are pretty exclusive — almost like the VIPs of the bird world. But unfortunately, not all of them are doing so hot. Habitat loss, climate change, and, let’s face it, human activity have all taken a toll. Some species are endangered, and others are teetering on the edge.
