Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan on 'Sinners' unique spin on vampirism

What I found so striking about the film is the way you use vampires to kind of talk about a

corrupting force in like art and how Samuel especially is like trying to protect his soul

but also his art and I wondered if that is a story that you two could connect to personally

You know I mean in this industry I mean you know you're constantly trying to protect your art

you know and as you navigate you know for me as an actor you know performances how you portray

characters, you know, trying to bring a piece of yourself to roles or whatnot. And now moving over

into storytelling and from behind the camera as director and dealing with all the obstacles and

politics that are around that and protecting a vision that you have, but also understanding the

business side of it as well. And there's a fight that you got to have within yourself and also

with the things that be that kind of challenge that vision, you know, as best you can. Obviously

to be an open collaboration and things evolve and grow and nothing is ever the same From where you start to where you finish like you write one movie you shoot one movie you edit one movie you know what i saying so yeah i could definitely identify with that with that as well for me i had such such an amazing experience making this

film and i kind of kind of told myself i wouldn't try to over explain it you know um uh like what i

couldn't communicate with with cinematic language i was gonna you know i figured i would let be but

what i will say is that because i think it's a brilliant question for me it is it was less about

that and more about the idea of a faustian deal old delta blues legend of a man selling his soul

to be good at guitar for the remainder of his life you know and that kind of exchange you've

been dumped a bad hand by society or by faith you know what are you willing to give up to to escape

that. For me in this film, more than anything, the vampires offer a, or vampirism is actually

a way out of a situation with a very high cost. So that was what fascinated me about

it, about the idea
