0:00
in today's video we're going to be
0:01
taking a look at survival kit items that
0:03
you can procure from your grocery store
0:07
and make at home They don't have to cost
0:17
around Hey everybody welcome back to the
0:19
channel And today I wanted to do kind of
0:22
a I don't know a short video of some
0:24
items that I have been finding lately at
0:27
my local grocery store and Walmart These
0:30
are items that um I'm actually seeing in
0:33
the checkout lines And what we're going
0:36
to be looking at primarily is containers
0:39
that you can get at your local grocery
0:41
store in Walmart and how you can turn
0:46
uh components for your survival kits
0:49
fishing kits hobo fishing kits things
0:51
like that So there's a lot of different
0:53
options out there and I want to show you
0:55
some of the things that I've been
0:57
discovering lately and see what you guys
0:59
think You know when we go
1:01
to the grocery store checkout uh it is
1:05
filled with candy And candy containers
1:09
um I'm finding are excellent resources
1:12
for building kits around And um if
1:15
you're going to be buying this stuff for
1:16
yourself anyway or for your grandkids or
1:19
whatever um and you have these
1:21
containers why not upcycle them turn
1:25
them into something else something
1:27
that's more productive And uh these
1:30
little M&M mini containers I'm finding
1:32
are pretty cool and they come in
1:34
different colors So this is a red one
1:36
Here's a blue one where I've taken the
1:38
label off of it It's a pretty good size
1:41
container Uh so there's a lot of things
1:43
you can do with this Also uh I'm finding
1:47
these little Altoid tins um very handy
1:50
This one is uh the I don't know what
1:53
these are Arctic I've never heard of
1:54
these before but it's kind of a cool
1:56
tint because it's got a hinged lid to it
1:58
but it's still metal so you can do stuff
2:01
with that for survival And then of
2:04
course this is what I would probably
2:08
consider kind of the uh gold standard of
2:13
uh candy container survival kits It's
2:16
Altoids standard metal tin
2:20
And I have tons of these in my in my
2:23
gear boxes and I use them all the time
2:26
for storing stuff But what's great about
2:28
them is that they make fantastic
2:32
containers to uh house your flint and
2:35
steel kit and uh to make char cloth And
2:39
one is not your typical color So what I
2:42
what I did is I um sanded all the paint
2:46
off of this and then um burnt it in the
2:49
fire making my char cloth And this is
2:51
how it comes out And then of course the
2:52
more times you use it the more of that
2:55
dark rich color you get But it's a
2:59
fantastic container for uh making char
3:01
cloth and holding the flint and steel
3:03
kit It can hold a pretty good sized
3:07
flint There's a smaller one
3:11
There's my striker out of an old file
3:14
And then in the bottom I just keep a
3:16
bunch of these swatches of old clothes
3:19
These are I think um from a pair of work
3:22
pants or something Cut them up It's kind
3:27
material And that all goes in the
3:31
tin And now when I get to camp and I
3:34
make a fire I can make some char cloth
3:36
with this And the tin also serves as a
3:40
way of protecting the contents Uh you
3:43
know flint and steel that big piece of
3:46
flint is pretty sharp and you want to
3:47
keep that uh protected in your pack You
3:50
don't want that just you know loose in
3:52
in a pocket because it will cut through
3:55
the material on your backpack or or your
3:58
uh your gear So the metal container also
4:01
serves a purpose of protection So the
4:04
Altoids uh tin Awesome Of course the
4:07
other Altoids tin that I showed you Now
4:09
on this one I actually put some
4:11
mini fishing stuff in here So a lot of
4:16
times um with survival kits you'll get
4:19
little spools of monofilament line And
4:23
uh there's not terribly lot of
4:25
monofilament line on here but it is
4:27
useful So instead of throwing that away
4:31
or not utilizing it I take those out of
4:34
some of those kits that I get and then I
4:37
add to it Here I've added a little bait
4:39
that's um already rigged and ready to go
4:41
Just need to hook that to some line So
4:44
that's got it's a grub with a sinker
4:46
head on it And then this package here uh
4:50
this contains um some leader line some
4:53
hooks and some sinkers And then the only
4:57
thing you really need to add to this is
4:59
probably maybe a small um
5:02
bobber But that all fits into that
5:04
container very well And once again it's
5:07
protecting the the the
5:10
contents and it keeps it all nice and
5:13
neat Another candy container that I see
5:16
a lot of at grocery stores are these gum
5:19
containers Uh the label I've taken off
5:21
of this one But what's fantastic about
5:23
these is that it actually has two lids
5:26
open ways of opening So you've got this
5:28
large opening here but then you have a
5:32
uh small controlled spout And this is
5:37
for keeping your slingshot ammo um under
5:41
control One thing about slingshot ammo
5:43
is um it's very hard to contain and uh
5:48
you know taking it out one at a time uh
5:50
can be difficult sometimes So this
5:52
little container that where I can just
5:54
shake out what I want uh one shot piece
5:58
at a time is it's very valuable So it's
6:00
a nice little container and then of
6:02
course you can refill it through the top
6:04
lid Another cool container that I found
6:07
recently or actually my wife found this
6:09
and she gave it to me and I was really
6:11
surprised by it This is a Tic Tac
6:13
container Um it's huge Uh but once again
6:17
it has several different ways you can
6:18
get into it So you can load it up with
6:20
whatever you want Now I in here I have
6:22
about I don't know I want to say 25 ft
6:26
paracord Um if I shoved a bank line in
6:30
here instead of paracord I could
6:32
probably get a lot more But what's cool
6:36
seals pretty well but it's got a hinge
6:40
top right so that way I can I can load
6:42
this thing fill it with what I want And
6:45
similar to the gum container it has a
6:49
spout And that's a perfect place to run
6:55
through Get it all tucked back in there
6:58
And now you have a way of pulling out
7:02
cord just as much as you need but it's
7:06
also protecting that cord It's keeping
7:08
it dry Uh it's keeping it tangle-free
7:12
and it's a really nice little easy
7:14
container that you can fit in the palm
7:15
of your hand You can throw this in your
7:17
uh backpack in your BDU
7:19
pocket and just pull that cord out as
7:21
you need it Of course with this red M&M
7:25
container I you know I have a feeling
7:27
with red this needs to be like a fire
7:29
starting kit So that's a very easy thing
7:31
to build You know you should always have
7:35
um uh a bunch of fire starters that
7:39
maybe you've made at home These are
7:41
little cotton I think they're called
7:43
dental dams and then they've been soaked
7:45
in paraffin But you know I can drop in a
7:49
bunch of those at the
7:51
bottom Kind of shake them down so that
7:54
they fill the space really well And then
7:57
what I can do is I can take a mini ferro
8:08
there And then here we have a birthday
8:11
candle But this birthday candle is a
8:13
trick birthday candle You can't blow it
8:15
out So this is a nice windresistant way
8:18
of starting a fire And then I can just
8:22
pack more of these little fire starters
8:28
edges Get it as many as you can in
8:34
there Now you got a pretty nice little
8:36
fire kit um that is very easy to
8:41
access Keeps the contents all uh
8:44
contained um really uh not a bad idea
8:48
for maybe a kids survival kit or their
8:51
backpack Now of course what I would do
8:52
is with a children's one I would make
8:54
sure I would take the candy label off
8:56
and I would wrap this in something like
8:59
duct tape and then I would label this
9:01
fire kit And of course and of course I
9:04
would show them how to use this before
9:06
they ever go out Just this is not
9:08
something you just stick in someone's
9:09
backpack and hope that they're going to
9:10
figure it out But for a kid you know
9:13
there's a few items in here that they
9:15
can get a fire starter Now of course
9:16
they're have to know how to use a ferro
9:18
rod That's something you need to teach
9:19
them um and decide of course if they
9:21
need to carry a pocket knife or not If
9:22
they don't or you don't think they're
9:24
old enough then you need to put a
9:25
striker in there for them and have them
9:27
practice at home and how to fluff up
9:29
those tinder tabs But they can get a
9:31
fire going with this little kit Another
9:33
kit that I just finished making and uh
9:37
was a lot of fun actually was a hobo
9:40
fishing kit Um fishing kits have a
9:44
really good place in in the whole
9:46
survival kit um realm because even
9:49
though food is never a huge priority
9:52
when you're trying to get out of a
9:55
survival situation the hope is of course
9:56
you're going to be rescued long before
9:58
you ever need food And the human being
10:00
can go a very long time without food Um
10:03
but uh it's also kind of fun um to have
10:08
one of these small fishing kits with you
10:10
and throwing it in your daypack so that
10:12
if you are out hiking and you discover a
10:14
stream or a small pond in the mountains
10:16
and you want to just fish for a little
10:17
bit and try your hand at it well you got
10:20
some stuff to to mess with and it's
10:21
great practice And this one uh what I
10:25
did is um first of all I stripped off
10:27
the label and then I wrapped it in duct
10:32
containers are kind of thin in the
10:35
middle and I think it's that's
10:37
intentional of course because they're
10:38
trying to save as much money as possible
10:40
So they're very flexible very thin The
10:43
duct tape helps uh strengthen the
10:46
container a little bit gives it some
10:48
more structure but also that duct tape
10:51
can be taken off a piece at a time and
10:53
utilized um in my survival situation
10:57
Then what I did is I took a zip tie and
11:00
I tied it um a little bit closer to the
11:03
top about 3/4 way up And then I started
11:07
wrapping my Kevlar line around this all
11:12
up And once I came to the
11:15
end I cut a notch in the lip of this
11:18
container so I could put that uh line
11:21
through it And now it's all contained
11:24
and it's not going to come undone And of
11:27
course the line at the bottom is tied um
11:29
through the zip tie So that's not going
11:31
to go anywhere So that's your line And
11:33
what's kind of nice about this is with
11:37
the zip tie what I've
11:38
discovered it fits my hand really well
11:41
and that is kind of a place for my
11:44
thumb So now I can kind of control how
11:47
I'm going to use that line And I think
11:49
the the big experiment is of course is
11:51
taking this out and trying it and see
11:52
how um it does coming off of this
11:55
container We we'll have to see how that
11:57
going to work It it may or may not but
11:59
at least you have the line that you can
12:01
utilize Then at the bottom what I did is
12:04
I had some of this mason's twine It's
12:06
really tough stuff Um very hard to cut
12:09
but I I made a little lanyard and then
12:12
put tape over that so it doesn't go
12:15
now you know this hangs and I can grab
12:18
this and I can start fishing And then
12:22
some inner tubes uh thrown over there
12:24
just as grip but also as emergency fire
12:28
starters And in this kit uh is a ton of
12:34
got another one of these little
12:42
grubs here Looks like a little
12:48
tadpole Got these little bait
12:52
balls Couple different floats Styrofoam
12:56
floats That one probably needs to be
12:58
replaced Starting to
13:02
disintegrate here I've got uh a whole
13:07
of sinkers and hooks
13:14
And then this is another little
13:15
container that I had that I filled up
13:18
with all kinds of stuff There's
13:19
additional hooks in here There is
13:21
another little there's another little
13:23
critter to fish with And then of course
13:46
fly some additional line This is
13:48
monofilament line once
13:50
again And a larger sinker these little
13:55
sinkers So there's a lot of different
13:57
stuff that I I was able to pack in this
14:00
uh tube And these little tubes you can
14:02
find these all kinds of different places
14:07
Um you know a lot of times uh different
14:10
kits will come with these tubes like
14:12
eyeglass kits repair kits things like
14:14
that So um you know always be on the
14:17
lookout for containers of all different
14:19
sizes in all different places because
14:20
you can find some really good stuff And
14:22
I never I never throw stuff away that um
14:27
I think I can reuse um for these types
14:30
of kits And of course honorable mention
14:33
is always uh pill containers Now this is
14:37
this is a smaller pill container And um
14:40
I found these uh espit uh style fuel
14:44
tabs that are round and they fit in this
14:48
small pill container perfectly I've got
14:50
uh see one two three four five um fuel
14:54
tabs in here And what's nice about this
14:57
is you know of course these fuel tabs
14:58
they always smell Uh they stink really
15:01
bad but if you can put them in a pill
15:03
container that's going to keep them
15:05
fresh dry and it's going to contain that
15:08
odor so it doesn't get all over your
15:09
gear So pill containers are always
15:12
fantastic um containers that you want to
15:14
keep I've done a video in the past on
15:16
how to kind of do a DIY fire kit using a
15:19
very large pill container Um I'll put a
15:21
link u for that Um but you know any of
15:26
this stuff is easily found and for most
15:29
people it's trash You know they get it
15:31
they buy it they throw it away and they
15:32
never think about it again But um as
15:34
preppers and survivalists and bush
15:37
crafters we should always be thinking
15:38
about how we can upcycle and recycle
15:40
items that we find in our environment um
15:43
not only as an exercise for your brain
15:47
um on how to improvise things but also
15:49
just how to save money and get to know
15:52
your gear better Because of course you
15:54
can go out and buy a very expensive
15:56
survival kit and those are awesome at
15:57
times but sometimes making your own
16:00
stuff um just makes it even better You
16:04
get to become very familiar with it And
16:06
then of course uh the other thing to say
16:08
about it is go out and test the stuff
16:10
and see how it works for you carry it
16:12
and make improvements to it and keep
16:14
changing it and eventually you'll have
16:16
some really awesome gear All right uh
16:20
thank you so much for watching my video
16:22
Um if you like this kind of content do
16:23
me a favor subscribe hit that bell
16:26
notification I try to release a new
16:28
video at least once a week Um and as
16:31
always thank you so much for watching my
16:33
channel and we will see you next time on
16:35
the Prepared Wanderer
