in today's video we're going to be
0:01
putting together a DIY survival fanny
0:04
pack that you can build and requires no
0:08
sewing stick
0:10
[Music]
0:15
around all right so I'm at home again um
0:19
self-imposed got some back issues that
0:21
I'm trying to get addressed and um
0:24
they're going to be taking care of here
0:25
shortly but um until I can get out in
0:28
the field I'm kind of spending a lot of
0:30
time in my office just messing around
0:32
with things and one thing I wanted to do
0:35
is um is I'm getting my gear ready for
0:37
the spring camping season um I really
0:40
plan to hit camping pretty hard this
0:41
year and go to a lot of different places
0:44
and take you guys Along on that Journey
0:45
that's part of my goals um but I wanted
0:48
to put together a really nice compact um
0:52
kit that can be thrown into my larger
0:55
backpacks um and travel with me uh when
0:59
I go camping and out exploring I wanted
1:02
it to be what I would consider a
1:04
Possible's pouch uh that is a concept
1:08
that the mountain men used to call their
1:11
kind of go bag that had all the little
1:13
things that they needed to service their
1:15
rifles but also help them start a fire
1:18
and things like that so the the modern
1:20
concept of this pouch really came from
1:25
my um experience watching Dave McIntyre
1:29
um uh he won I believe the second season
1:33
of Alone um unfortunately he has passed
1:36
away but before he was on alone he had a
1:39
fantastic YouTube channel where he was
1:41
down in South America doing Ministry but
1:45
also teaching
1:47
survival um
1:49
Expeditions and he would go out in the
1:52
jungle with his team and these different
1:55
people that he would take out there
1:57
there and he always would take time to
1:59
go go through his equipment and his gear
2:02
and one thing that he had was this kind
2:05
of E&E pouch possibles pouch whatever
2:08
you want to call it that he always had
2:10
with him um this is something that went
2:13
in his larger backpacks and gear and
2:16
then he was able to remove this and then
2:19
take it with him if he went out
2:21
exploring or checking out different um
2:24
places so it's it's a minimalist kit it
2:28
has lots of different things in it that
2:30
can help you get through um a survival
2:35
situation and what I like about this is
2:38
um is that it's a very uh inexpensive
2:42
pouch that I found on Amazon this is by
2:45
a company called Elite uh spanker and if
2:49
you guessed it yes it is you know one of
2:52
the many Chinese companies that are
2:54
producing nylon gear and selling them on
2:56
Amazon um it's pretty wellmade I've had
2:59
really good luck with their products the
3:01
name is very strange I don't quite
3:04
understand why they have that name but
3:06
this is a utility pouch Molly utility
3:09
pouch and as you can see on the back
3:10
here it is set up to strap to um you
3:14
know a chest rig plate carrier or a
3:18
backpack and it's a Molly organization
3:22
pouch uh but the size of it and um the
3:28
setup of it is perfect
3:30
um for modification and turning it into
3:33
a really nice little possible survival P
3:37
so it's a fairly easy modification to do
3:39
but you are going to need some parts and
3:42
pieces now one thing that I always like
3:46
to um tell people when they're uh
3:50
putting together gear is make sure you
3:54
save and collect all those bits and
3:57
pieces and scraps that you get over the
4:00
years um when I come across old military
4:04
surplus that maybe is no longer good but
4:07
is being thrown out or I can get at a
4:09
pretty cheap price I will cannibalize it
4:12
for buckles
4:14
straps um I save things that I get um
4:18
from other pieces of
4:20
gear uh there's all kinds of things in
4:23
here that I I do not get rid of I just
4:26
keep it webbing of
4:28
course uh is a f fantastic item to have
4:30
this is standard 1-in webbing and 1in
4:33
webbing um is kind of the standard for
4:37
most
4:39
DIY uh nylon tactical gear so the
4:42
hardware you're going to need first is
4:45
some way of attaching a strap
4:48
to this Molly weedding right here so
4:53
what I like are these little Clips I
4:55
think these are called slick clips and
4:58
I'm going to try to put links down in
5:00
the description so if you guys want to
5:02
find these and purchase them you can
5:05
what's awesome about these slick Clips
5:08
are that they have this gate on each
5:12
side so you can attach this to the Molly
5:16
and then run your 1in webbing through
5:19
the other side and and they just open up
5:23
by applying some pressure and then you
5:26
close
5:27
them by squeezing them
5:31
then you're going to need some 1in
5:32
webbing now uh there's all different
5:35
types of nylon webbing um different
5:38
colors different styles this is Ranger
5:41
Green this is a um I think this is a
5:44
cotton blend webbing it's very
5:47
lightweight very flexible um you can go
5:50
with a nylon webbing that's much stiffer
5:52
if that uh works better for you and the
5:55
next piece of equipment you'll need are
5:57
these little 1-in buckles
6:00
Les so you pass the
6:03
webbing through the
6:10
Buckle and then what I do is to secure
6:14
it so it is a what I would consider a no
6:20
so
6:22
option is you run it back through the
6:25
buckle
6:35
and that creates a loop and that's where
6:37
that clip is going to go
6:44
through so if you don't have access to a
6:46
sewing machine you don't know how to sew
6:48
you don't have someone who can help you
6:49
sew this is an option I think eventually
6:52
what I'm going to do is I'm going to
6:53
take this Buckle off and I'm going to
6:55
actually have my wife who is very good
6:57
with sewing has a nice sewing machine SE
7:00
a loop on the end of this that'll be
7:01
much more secure and it'll be less
7:04
Hardware the next piece of gear you're
7:06
going to need is a fast Tex Buckle this
7:08
is going to be your ability to take this
7:11
thing on and off easily like a fanny
7:13
pack and you just need a 1-in
7:15
buckle these can be cannibalized from
7:18
all kinds of different packs or you can
7:20
order them on Amazon or find them at you
7:23
know fabric stores whatever need another
7:25
one of these buckles so this end is the
7:29
end
7:30
that is the adjustment and as you can
7:32
see when you pass it through it does not
7:34
come loose it locks on itself but if
7:39
you open it up or move the
7:43
Buckle it's
7:45
adjustable so this is very secure one
7:48
thing you probably want to do and that's
7:50
something that I need to do is probably
7:52
sew the end of this to create a tab or
7:57
wrap it with duct tape to create a tab
8:00
that way it doesn't easily pass through
8:02
here in case it gets too
8:04
loose then you need another one of these
8:06
slider buckles because this is going to
8:09
create a loop here that the webbing is
8:12
going to pass
8:13
[Music]
8:14
through on the female end of this Buckle
8:17
so that just has one
8:19
bar and your webbing goes around there
8:22
comes through that buckle and that
8:24
secures it so that is the no
8:27
so way to make a waist
8:30
strap now of course with this Molly you
8:33
don't have to make a waist strap if you
8:36
don't want to you can actually take this
8:38
Molly and not thread it through button
8:41
it and then just pass it through your
8:43
pant belt but I don't like a lot of
8:45
things on my belt because that means I
8:47
have to take my belt on and off to get
8:49
stuff on and off I much prefer a quick
8:52
release Buckle system or strap that I
8:55
can wear around my waist and take it on
8:58
and off as I need
9:00
all right so the front of the pouch has
9:02
um the the Molly webbing or Pal's
9:06
webbing on the front you can actually
9:07
attach more stuff to the front of this
9:09
but it's also a velcro field so you can
9:11
put patches on it and on the bottom you
9:13
have elastic retainers which um actually
9:16
fits a cat tourniquet perfectly um very
9:20
secure when the pouch is loaded up
9:21
that's not going to go anywhere so
9:22
that's a nice uh addition to the pouch
9:25
then you have a front zipper pocket
9:30
and then this thing opens all the way
9:32
down about halfway so you can actually
9:36
get into this thing and there is
9:37
organization built in this pouch so
9:39
let's just go through some of these
9:41
items that I consider you know my kind
9:44
of grab and go items we have a backup
9:47
headlamp um I've I've shown this
9:51
headlamp um in several of my videos I
9:53
have a lot of these and I have them
9:55
stashed and all kinds of different kits
9:56
but it's a little petzel Elite
10:00
uh it's very lightweight has an
10:02
emergency strobe also has a red light
10:06
feature to preserve that night
10:08
vision and then it doesn't take out much
10:10
room because it has a very thin small
10:13
strap as a survival you're going to need
10:16
some type of cover and some kind of
10:17
insulating layer to protect you so a
10:19
survival blanket uh is a great way to go
10:22
this one's from so and it's a much
10:24
bigger one than uh the standard smaller
10:27
ones that you get which is I have one of
10:30
these too this is like a little
10:32
one but this can actually be used
10:35
as uh a shelter so you can set this up
10:38
as a tarp um cover yourself up and this
10:41
will um actually protect one to two
10:43
people so it's a really uh convenient
10:47
small package uh emergency uh shelter
10:52
system this is the Contour feather it's
10:54
a really cool little knife um I love how
10:57
this thing just fits in your hand it
11:00
even has a whistle built into the handle
11:02
but the cool thing about this is it
11:04
actually has a surface on the spine for
11:07
striking a Ferro rod and it has a
11:10
builtin Ferro Rod right
11:14
[Music]
11:16
there and then also has a pull through
11:19
sharpener ceramic rods not those aren't
11:21
always the best but for you know some
11:24
emergency touchups of your little backup
11:27
blade it's a cool little feature and
11:29
then it has a very nice sturdy metal
11:32
clip on the back so you can clip this
11:34
onto something or run some paracord
11:36
through it and use this as a neck knife
11:38
but for a backup knife I think this is a
11:41
pretty good option as you can see in the
11:45
pouch there is elastic webbing sewn into
11:48
the back different layers and different
11:50
sizes so you can put a variety of items
11:52
back there and then it has a little mesh
11:55
slip pocket right here to kind of help
11:58
organize some longer skinnier items so
12:01
in the bottom I have a hunk of 550
12:05
cord I've got some um
12:09
wax uh dental dam that I use for uh fire
12:14
starting so little emergency fire
12:16
starters right there then I have an
12:20
emergency saw wire saw this is actually
12:24
the um military issue one that comes in
12:27
the aircraft uh survival kit pilot
12:29
survival kits it's a much better wire
12:32
saw than the
12:34
standard uh cheap ones that you get in
12:37
the the survival kits this is a little
12:39
bit more upgrated it actually has some
12:41
teeth to it it will cut and it has
12:44
paracord Loops built into it for
12:51
pulling and I have some tape flat pack
12:56
this is uh this is more like a AER style
12:59
tape it is a cloth-based tape um High VI
13:03
orange uh so I can use this to uh tape
13:06
up my
13:07
shelter and make
13:09
repairs um but it's very strong stuff I
13:13
don't know where I got this at I've had
13:14
this for years it goes in all my kits
13:18
um but any kind of duct tape would work
13:21
this is a small Frontier emergency water
13:25
filter this is the type that you
13:27
actually put the little tube on and then
13:32
you're sticking this into the water the
13:35
dirty water and then drinking directly
13:36
from it so it is a quick way of getting
13:39
a drink of water and and still being
13:42
safe doesn't take up a lot of room very
13:45
lightweight but I have other means of
13:47
filtering more water and I'll show you
13:49
that here in a minute and then of course
13:51
a big lighter with some duct tape
13:53
wrapped around it got to have that
13:59
very invaluable piece of equipment um I
14:01
have these in all my kits little fire
14:03
Bellows so basically this allows you to
14:07
stick this down into uh your pile of
14:11
Tinder and blow into it and that gets
14:14
the fire going much quicker uh really
14:17
great
14:18
for fires that are uh maybe built with
14:23
wet wood um you're having trouble
14:25
getting it started a fire bells can uh
14:28
usually get help that situation out and
14:32
then in here I've got a few items so
14:36
this is a piece of reflective material
14:39
that's been sewn into an armband that
14:41
way I can use this to actually uh signal
14:43
or Mark gear at night so if someone's
14:46
looking for me this will reflect back to
14:50
them uh this is another piece of
14:52
military surplus this is a signal panel
14:55
marker um made by specially products uh
14:58
in in PA it's a very lightweight piece
15:02
of material that's been sealed in this
15:04
bag these come in the aircraft survival
15:06
kits as
15:07
well and then this is my larger water
15:11
purification
15:13
kit but I have Aqua tabs so these are
15:16
going to be dropped into a bag of dirty
15:19
water and then you let them set for I
15:21
think about an hour maybe
15:24
less I also
15:26
have this little
15:29
a piece of plastic material that is a
15:33
funnel that fits a coffee
15:38
filter and that allows me to pour dirty
15:41
water in a container and filter out all
15:45
the the chunky stuff now this piece of
15:50
equipment um unfortunately I don't think
15:52
they sell these anymore uh the people
15:54
who had these uh their store closed down
15:58
and uh they're no longer available but
16:01
maybe this is something you could
16:03
potentially uh make or fashion yourself
16:05
but even if you don't have this plastic
16:08
uh kind of funnel definitely these are
16:12
readily available in a grocery stores
16:13
you should have these in your pantry
16:15
anyway so get yourself a couple coffee
16:18
filters and throw them in your kit to
16:19
make a water purification kit and then
16:22
the one thing that I do like to have are
16:25
these whirl bags they take up very
16:28
little room
16:29
they're pretty sturdy and they're great
16:31
for treating
16:40
water put your dirty water in there drop
16:43
a tab in and now you've got uh clean
16:46
water after it has a chance to
16:52
activate and the front pouch uh
16:55
navigation you're still going to want
16:57
some type of navigation that you don't
16:59
have to rely on your phone so a wrist
17:01
Compass this is a stto wrist Compass
17:05
actually these are pretty accurate and
17:06
they work very well um then a small
17:10
signal mirror this one is from
17:15
Essie and it's actually got a piece of
17:19
uh protective material that's sticky
17:21
that you just peel that off and then the
17:23
the the mirror is ready to be used but
17:26
that helps protect and it comes in this
17:27
little uh myar sleeve then another great
17:31
item from SC knives is this um WR and
17:34
Rain
17:37
notebook but it also has your grid
17:40
readers for
17:43
maps it has different ways of uh how to
17:47
navigate it kind of shows you how to
17:50
read a too map if that's something that
17:52
you need some refreshing on but it has
17:54
just uh a variety of map tools and then
17:57
in here you've got
18:00
you're writing the r notes that you can
18:05
take and then with something like this a
18:09
pencil is much preferred over a pen
18:11
because this is something that you can
18:14
of course sharpen with your knife and
18:17
you don't have to worry about the ink
18:19
running out and then I keep it just in
18:21
this little pouch to protect
18:26
everything and then uh of course some
18:28
kind of magnifying glass for you know uh
18:32
pulling out splinters or reading Maps
18:35
even starting a
18:37
fire and then uh some knot cards these
18:42
are great reminders that you know if you
18:44
are in a situation you're trying to tie
18:46
up a knot and you're having trouble
18:48
functioning thinking clearly because of
18:50
course you're excited or upset um maybe
18:53
you're cold and tired this can help and
18:55
uh they're just nice to have because if
18:58
you're with other folks you can always
18:59
hand off your hunk of paracord and give
19:02
them this not cardem practice so it's a
19:06
great lightweight item to have in your
19:08
kit this kit we have all the bases
19:11
covered we've got shelter we have some
19:13
first aid with that tourniquet and that
19:16
tape we have fire
19:18
making we have um tools we have repair
19:23
items we have signaling we have uh
19:26
navigation we have lighting
19:30
and all in a very
19:32
compact easy to carry kit that you can
19:36
take anywhere and you can put together
19:39
yourself and it's not going to cost you
19:41
a ton of money I hope you found this
19:43
video useful if you did do me a favor
19:45
hit that like button consider
19:48
subscribing I try to release videos all
19:49
the time at least once a week if I can
19:52
um hopefully going to be getting out
19:53
here soon after I get these back issues
19:56
addressed and uh once that happens
19:58
happens I plan to be hitting the trail
20:00
and camping quite a bit this year and
20:02
I'm going to be taking you guys on all
20:04
those trips with me um and this kit is
20:08
definitely going to be going with me
20:09
because it is so Compact and um there's
20:13
no reason not to have these Essentials
