Surviving On An Island With £100 - Part 1

Alright, so I'm currently at the airport. I have my passport and £100 on me

I'm traveling to an island called Gran Canaria to survive the next five days

This is a £100 holiday. I hope I've seen it now

I'm trying to make a big deal for you To make something right

Make up what I'm about Alright, we have arrived Alright, so first thing I want to do

is change my pounds to the local currency Euros Hola I'd like to change this please

I need the passport Oh, my passport? gonna do that because she converts my pounds my hundred pounds to 85 euros

which is absolutely ridiculous so we're gonna find a way to get into the central

and then figure out ourselves from there the cheapest mode of transport in any

country is the bus so we just need to head straight for the bus stop does this

go to the central central no which one goes to the central

I've been told to go to the top on the right and from there

I should be able to grab a bus to the central. You always have to

get to the central, at least for me. From there I can figure out my bearings

and know what the I'm going to do. I'm not too scared on this challenge

because I've got my sleeping bag. I'm so happy. I don't have to squat in hostels

hoping not to get cool. I can just find a nice comfy spot on the beach and just pass out the whole night

It was 2 euros 30. No one could spot me. I was like, look, I've got 10 pounds

I'm like, well, it's like 2 euros. so that's giving you an idea of the type of people they have here hell the problem

with the exchange is 100 pounds equals to 114 euros right if they gave me 100 euros i wouldn't

mind but they're offering 85 so they're taking 30 euros for like charges and fees like that's like

way too much and that cuts into my budget which makes it a lot more difficult for me to survive

over the next five days. All right, so I'm back in the airport. I figured instead of converting the whole 100 pound

and losing about 30 euros, I want to see if I can convert just 10

I know there's a limit to what they convert, so hopefully they can do 10

and then the charges aren't that bad, and I can just freaking get on the bus, get into the central

Hello. All right, there you go. So I was offered 8 euros 50 for my 10 pound

So I've gone for that. So instead of losing 30 euros, I've lost 3 euros, which isn't bad

Alright, so we're currently in the Central

First thing I want to do is find some food to eat because I'm bloody starving

So I've got six euros left from the exchange I made We're going to use that for dinner

Then we're going to find somewhere to sleep Alright, so I'm at the square close to the bus stop

And there seems to be a few stalls around They've got one with like crepes

They've got another with hot dogs ideally i'd like something substantial for six euros because i haven't eaten the whole day today

um which one is bocadillo yes all right okay for 350 yes yes please yeah thank you so i found a

store with a sandwich called bocadillo for three euros 50 which isn't bad at all we're gonna go for

that and it's that and it comes with either chicken or meat now for those of you asking

or wondering if I'm still vegan. Right now, I'm still trying to figure it out

I'm going through a phase where I'm kind of just eating anything

which is really bad. But right now, I'm figuring it out. Let's just put it as that

I know in the long run, veganism is my lifestyle. That's like my direction

That's my path. But right now, in this moment, I'm eating meat

I don't speak Spanish but I understood what she meant. Alright so it's currently 8 o'clock and 20 degrees which means it's not too cold

What we gonna do is we gonna walk around and try and scout some areas to bed down for the night so really it the same situation everywhere i go not knowing the safe areas or like the dodgy

areas where to go where to stay away from and i guess i could do some research on that but

i also don't want other people's opinions of a place or an area to kind of taint my own

experience of it because most times when people tell you stuff about like different areas oh stay

away from here stay you go over there you experience it like you don't experience the

same thing that other person experienced so i like to kind of leave it open and just um

kind of figure out myself right so i've just been walking around and they don't have a lot of

anti-homeless benches where they divide it up and it make it difficult for you to sleep on i don't

know if it's because there aren't a lot of like homeless people here but everything's just pretty

like open all right so i've been walking for about 40 minutes but i finally found the beach

it's like the promised land and guess what there are people like setting up tents

on the beach there's people sleeping here there's a tent there's another tent

I was gonna keep going further to the main beach but this one seems pretty chill

there are a few people sleeping here as well so that tells me it's pretty like it's good to go

there's a sign that says no showering no dogs and no bicycles nothing about no sleeping

good good good i don't actually speak um spanish but yeah um i wanted to ask about this beach is it it's

pretty chill like they don't disturb you yeah yeah it's good yeah you can sleep here yeah all

chat and we've actually got more companies so more travelers um coming to join us which which

like i didn't expect this at all but like these guys are these guys are pretty cool

all right so it's almost 11 p.m a bunch of the guys are over there they're having a movie night

I've got a bed down next to Costa. And we're going to cool it a day

It's currently 7am. I woke up to abandonment. Costa had abandoned me and retreated to the

wall over there and Linos is over there so I am literally the only one in this

area by myself everyone everyone has found like a really good spot so I'm just gonna kind of

claim this area they're like two palm trees here so I'm gonna claim this area

You can kind of like just stay in between here or just around this palm tree

But yeah, 7am on the beach, day two. Alright, so I'm all packed up

There's my stuff. and everyone is just disappeared everyone has packed their stuff and everyone's gone

and i'm like what the heck although costa is still here and then there's a tent still there

but everyone else everyone else is just packed up and gone it's like they come here at night and

then in the day they like they just get on with their lives so i'm kind of just here linos is over

there and costa is over there so i'm gonna do a workout i'm gonna take a shower and then we're

gonna go as well okay so that's one bang chest one bang is a hundred reps so ideally you want to

do one bang chest one bang abs one bang shoulders one bang arms and then we're

gonna do legs look at the legs look at the legs compared to the upper body it's

a bit of cheating you've been cheating to but look at the cards could compare

and soap so I've just had to borrow some from Linus. Now I heard there a shower head over there somewhere So we going to go there and take a shower

We're going to walk around the city, see what we can find, see what there is to do

grab some food exchange our money at a decent rate and then just enjoy the rest of the holiday i guess

that was actually very lucky me finding this place yesterday because i was just gonna walk

past i was looking for somewhere else i was also just thinking to stay on one of the benches in

the city so good thing i didn't and i persevered 40 minutes walk until i found here and it just

happened to be perfect all right so I've just seen a familiar face Santander let's see if we can

exchange it here I know usually you might have to bank with them to exchange it but let's give it a go I'd like to exchange some money please I'd like to

exchange for yours Because if you are a new customer here, you have Santander's bank

I have Santander's bank in the UK. Do you have an account here in Spain

No. Is that possible? So for some reason, my clock is an hour ahead

Even though my phone knows my location, like I'm using Google Maps

and my network is already charging me £2 a day to use the service

So the math is not mathing. I have 80, 90 pounds. I want to exchange pounds to euros

The chica, she's not here. I think I understood that. I'd like to change 90 pounds

So it's not bad. And then our breakfast looks rather small. Thank you so much

They're lovely, amazing people over here. Breakfast was 8 euros 10. Wasn't as feeling as I'd like, but we are on a budget, so no complaints here

Right now, I'm off to go meet a friend, Igor. You guys might have seen him in the Spain series, the 100lb holiday Spain series

Which we did about two years ago we're about to meet again and

Hi Celeste, hi. Nice to meet you. We're with Celeste and Igor and we've just gotten to Las Palmas beach

So we're going to walk around, take our shoes off, feel the sand, relax on the beach, maybe jump in the water

And just enjoy the rest of the day I guess. So Igor and Celeste have gone for a swim

I told him I had my daily dose of cold water today so I'm just gonna stay right here

And he's giving me some apples so happy days. So we just walked into an all-you-can-eat restaurant and Igor's friend, Alvarter, made the suggestion

about going to an all-you-can-eat buffet once a day and stopping your stomach so much that you'll

fool the rest of the day and in that way you get to save a lot of money so the the buffet is 10

11.95 or 12 euros so it's not a bad shout we've been here about two hours and we're thinking to

turn this into a challenge and see how long we can actually stay here before we get kicked out

So we'll just stay here and keep Ian and Ian and Ian and Ian

And so we're there. All right, so we came up with an idea to write down a list of challenges

that we're going to be doing over the next few days. okay so it's almost three hours and she's finally come up to us and asked us if we want to pay by card or by cash

so it was $16,000 alright so these guys are set on heading to a hostel

I was tempting them to sleep on the beach but they don't fancy it too much

plus the weather looks like it will be raining tonight at 10pm

so probably not the best shout they have found a hostel in a cave on the mountain

so it doesn't get more exciting than that so we might go and check it out and seeing it's one bed

it might be a beach situation in the cave okay so we have a long journey to get there right

we have like an hour and a half to get there currently at the supermarket um i feel like i shouldn spend more money but i also tempted to spend more money Why Because I feel like I have too much on me for the next three days I have 69 euros

that's way too much. Now I'm gonna go for cereal. Okay so we grabbed some things from the shop which cost 5 euros 50

bringing our total down to okay so Alberto has just booked to the Airbnb and

they've suggested we get there in the day because walking through the jungle at

night is very dangerous and scary there's no electricity and we need to be

careful we need to be careful like just walking around yeah is it gonna be like

haunted in any way We are officially on the bus

It takes us an hour 30 minutes to get to the place. So by the time we get there, it will be late

So we're currently in the middle of nowhere. We're just going off the first bus

The location is still about 30 minutes away. On another bus, we're on a road, which is slightly on a mountain

And like they warned us, we don't want to get there late. they don't even act like they're going to stop no

there's no 303 at this bus stop there's no bus 303 here

so what do we do you have to hitchhike

The 303 only stops if you signal it. Yeah. Okay, you're up mate

So it's not so hard. It shouldn't be so hard. Oh, finally

Trecent to tres. Alright, so we're finally on the bus. We've got 30 minutes to go

Then we get to walk the scary mountainside to find our cave

Okay, so we're halfway. We've got 15 more minutes to go. And then the real challenge starts

Oh, . It's completely pitch dark. We don't know where we're going

but apparently We're gonna be there in a few minutes and we're gonna have to stretch or walk through the forest

for the Airbnb yes Airbnb what is what is it called out house right oh thank you so much so just straight ahead or is it this

straight head straight ahead right oh inside oh oh no we just walked all right

So we're currently in the hostel. We're charging up our stuff. There's people in the living room

drumming and like playing the guitar and like singing. It's got like this big

traveler community vibe. Alright so we found a chess board and apparently Alberto is their final boss

So we're gonna play Eagle and see how well we do. I'm not good at chess by the way

And I haven't played in a while but that's not an excuse

It's raining. We're currently on our way to the cave. Spur

Sounds good. We'll check out tomorrow. And we just we just lay on the floor and it's safe if something just comes in and like eats our feet

Yeah If you're ever in Gran Canaria, this is what 30 euros will cost you

But it's so much harder than it sounds
