Verbal vs Non-Verbal Communications

What is verbal and nonverbal communications and how do they differ

Well, communications using words or verbal and all other forms of communication that are not strictly tied to words is really considered nonverbal communication

Now, things like facial expression, tone of voice, inflections, context, body language

all of that are types of nonverbal communications, even though they may be somewhat tied to verbal communication

Now, a more scientific dissection between verbal and nonverbal would first begin with metacommunications

And this is when you have a verbal communication, but you have undertones

secondary elements of the verbal communication that have meaning beyond the actual message you're conveying beyond the actual words. This could be

things like your tone of voice or your the manner in which you use one word

choice versus another and it gives some significance to the meaning of what

you're saying or at least how it's perceived. So there's communication happening beyond just the words that are being said and more along with how they're being said

and the conditions under which they being said Okay next would be kinesic messages and these are conducted without using words and they can be visual or vocal in nature So they can be related to verbal or nonverbal communications Visual would be things like behavior how you act in a scenario

If you're offended when somebody asks something and you act that way or you're surprised or you seem anxious

All of this is a form of communication to others when they perceive it. The way you move your hands or your body in a given situation, the clothing you wear in the context of a situation communicates something to others

So any of these things can be communications. But the key aspect is that they're kinesic and that they're visual in nature and they're outside of the use of words

Another way without the use of words is vocal communication. So it's not the words you're saying, but how you're saying them with the accent, pronunciation, any sounds you make along with them, changes in tonal quality or raspiness in the voice, modulation between keys going high and low in the things that you're saying

This is a form of vocal kinesic message. So these are the categories or generally the ways you would talk about verbal

versus nonverbal communication and what it means to have metacommunication within a

verbal communication and kinesic messages or communications that accompany primarily nonverbal communications
