Claudia Grant From the 1985 anime series Robotech, back when Anime definitely still had more bad examples of black girl anime characters than good ones, there was at least one character that was done really well. That character is Claudia Grant. The classic anime series tells the story of how robot technology uses giant machines to fight extraterrestrial invaders of Earth. Claudia held the rank of lieutenant and was in charge of a crew of 15,000 people a board the massive battle fortress. She is a relaxed and confident leader. 2. Bob Makihara Bob Makihara is a character from the anime series Tenjou Tenge. He is known for being one of the strongest characters in the series and is one of the only black anime characters with dreads. The creators of this show did an amazing job imagining what a black person would be like growing up in Japan. Bob is a character that is very proud of his culture, being that he is from South Africa . He fights in a martial art style called Ritualistic Capoeira. 3. Afro Samurai Afro Samurai is probably the first Black Anime character you think of. Developed in early 2000 for an American audiences, Afro Samurai takes place in a feudal Japan, the time of samurais and ninjas. He is a highly skilled badass samurai that witnesses his father being killed as a boy and lives to get revenge on his killer. This anime series is a must watch! Plus, the vocals of ninja ninja is done by Samuel L Jackson and the music is completed by RZA of Wu Tang. 4. Michiko Malandro The lead character from the anime series Michiko to Hatchin, Michiko is one Brazilian you don’t want to mess with. At first, you might think this is another stereotypical black person that is escaping out of prison. Michiko actually escaped a least four time. However, by the end you grow to love this character and what she stands for. Michiko might also be the only Afro-Latina lead in an anime. 5. Kirikou Rung Kirikou Rung is a young black man from the anime Soul Eater. It is said that the creator of Soul Eater Atsushi Okubo specially made Kirikou Rung to help combat the lack of diversity in anime. He can fight, trains in a special school where he is one of the top three students, stays calm under pressure, and does it all without being overly stereotypical. Those are our top 5 black anime characters, but we have one more honorable mention. And that’s Picocolo from the anime series Dragon Ball. There is probably not a single black person from America that watches anime that didn’t relate to Piccolo and his character.
