The body produces it naturally. Supplements offer 3 MG of melatonin when all our body needs is .25 MG of melatonin. That's 12x the amount our body needs. The issue here is that we become dependent on an external (exogenous) source of this hormone. The body produces it naturally, we just need to support it in doing so. Melatonin production can be increased by decreasing the body temperature (cooling down the room), as well as eating foods rich in magnesium and glycine. Reducing exposure to artificial/junk light.
