The Terra Grappler is simply an A/T tire. While the Trail Grappler being the most aggressive with widest block valleys is a mud terrain tire. Now here sitting in the middle, the Ridge and the Recon are both hybrid tires. A hybrid is simply a mixture of two different tires. Where The Ridge Grappler for example has a mud tire’s shoulders while its middle stays all terrain with compact blocks arrangement. The Recon Grappler is a combination of Toyo Open Country RT and Nitto Ridge Grappler. If you are wondering what’s Toyo doing here, they both are part of a same company, ran by same people, and looking at their design it really makes sense. Now…Let’s check out all of these tires one by one. Starting with Nitto Terra Grappler G2which is its 2nd generation and now comes with updated design. And, besides exhibiting a new look, the tire provides better traction on snow and is quitter on roads. With bigger central rib, the tire offers more contact with the road, so they provide more grip as well. But the thunderbolt lightning sipping visible on all its blocks is still not that effective, as the tire tends to slip and loose traction in wet conditions. Moving on to the Nitto Recon Grappler With these newest tire offering, Nitto is able to bridge the gap between the Terra and Ridge Grappler. So, they come right in the middle in terms of aggressiveness. These tires come with (50k miles warranty) and they are the only one to have this. Compared to other, all tires have dual sidewalls and variable pitch technology. But here Terra Grappler has 3PMSFR. But also has 2 ply sidewalls, where its 3 plies in Ridge and Recon Grappler, so they are more durable than Terra Grappler. In terms of performance, Recon Grappler provides better on road experience than Ridge Grappler. And at the same time, they also offer you with greater off-road performance if we compare them with Terra Grapplers. The tire basically provides you with an aggressive design without compromising on road comfort. The staggered shoulder blocks are scalloped and have reinforced foundations where no stone ejectors are embedded and instead, they have ridges in between. This forms aggressive shoulders and at the same time lock the movement of the blocks, improving on road handling. But since the tire’s shoulders come in to play on corners, the Recon Grappler with its minimal design although provides good on road grip, but still suffers a little on wet roads. So, on its shoulder blocks, there isn’t too much going on. However, the central area of the tire is quite opposite with aggressive arrangement. So, can these tires outperform Nitto Ridge? Well, Ridge Grappler is another hybrid which is built on A/T platform, but it’s still more aggressive than the Recon Grappler. The tire features bolder stone ejectors and bulkier sidewall lugs. And this combined with its softer material, the tire is able to perform better off road. And although the tire has same 3 ply sidewalls, these bulkier lugs further protect the tire against sharper objects. Other than this, the tire features slanted Z shaped grooves in the middle and bigger staggered shoulder blocks. And all of them make wider channels so more volume of mud, water and dirt can pass through. Meanwhile, the sharp triangular blocks with notches are able to cut through all sorts of terrains. The tires however are louder than the Recon and Terra Grappler. Moving on to our last tire, the Nitto Trail Grappler, which is MT tire designed for not just mud but all kinds of off-road terrains. The tire offers a straightforward and open tread design where central area contains 2 blocks forming wide channels in between. And on sides, you see serrated shoulders with blocks that are divided by deep incisions. And these shoulders than extend to sidewalls and provide you with the biggest lugs in the Grappler family. Overall, these tires are not designed for roads. So, they are pretty noisy compared to others, but with 3 ply construction and wider grooves they are the best for off roads. So, if you’re mostly staying off road, you can consider these tires, otherwise Terra, Recon and Ridge Grappler go from least to most aggressive. So, you can choose any of these according to your needs.
