However, the show had such a devoted following that fans bombarded NBC with letters, persuading the network to extend it for two more seasons. After the sixth season, Will Smith wanted to focus on his movie career and the show ended, to the dismay of most of us. 2. Steve Urkel Crashes the Party One of the longest running black shows of all time is Family Matters. Although much of the popularity of the show can be credited to the character Steve Urkel, initially, Urkel was only supposed to appear in one episode. When the character appeared in one episode halfway through the first season, he was such a hit with audiences that he was made a regular. The rest is steve urkel history. 3. Living Single for the win Living Single was the most-watched show in African American households for all five seasons it was on air. The only other series to tie the record is The Parkers. 4. 10 Shades of Martin Martin Lawrence is known for his many characters, but did you know he played a total of 10 roles in Martin? Martin played Martin Payne, Sheneneh Jenkins, Edna (Mama) Payne, Ol’ Otis, Jerome, Roscoe, Dragonfly Jones, Bob, Elroy Preston, and King Beef. 5. Dee had enough Sheryl Lee Ralph, who played Dee on Moesha, was done with the show by Season 6. Why? She thought the plot twist that made Frank Dorian’s dad instead of his uncle was a horrible direction for the story line. She felt the show was such a great example of a black family that making the patriarch a liar who had an affair during his first marriage was the wrong message to send. That’s it for this episode.
