The Giant’s Causeway…the eighth wonder of the world. But is the road of individual rocks a miracle of nature and science…or a blunder by the Irish giant Finn MacCool, who needed his clever wife to get him out of the mess he made? Here are the conflicting stories… The Giant’s Causeway attracts more a million visitors a year, making it the most popular tourist destination in Northern Ireland. The myth of the giants MacCool and his Scottish opponent Benandonner live on in the mysterious stone landmarks left behind. There’s the Giant’s Boot, the Giant’s Gate the Giant’s Organ and many more. It’s a UNESCO world heritage site, but surprisingly perhaps, visitors are free to walk along it as they wish. From a distance it may look like a solid road but it’s made up of thousands of interlocking hexagonal shaped columns of rock. The causeway used to be owned a local aristocratic family who recognised its potential as a tourist attraction…so why did they blast a hole through it? Thankfully, the causeway is now looked after more carefully by the National Trust. And don’t worry, you’ll be perfectly safe if you visit; the causeway is now free of all battling giants.
