The Falken Wildpeak AT3w gives you amazing on road comfort and wet traction, while the General Grabber ATX is very efficient in terms of wear and winter performance. Both tires are also great off road but Falken Wildpeak AT3w provides you with a little bit of an upper hand. For example, on muddy terrains, although all terrain tires are notorious for performing poorly Wildpeak offers deepest tread in the category going up to 19/32” where maximum seen on Grabber is 16/32". The deep tread voids provide good enough mud cleaning while stepped edges on Z shaped blocks and the notches on c shaped ones cut through the mud much more effectively in comparison. The General Grabber ATX is not so efficient with mud as it features an interlocking design, which by the way looks very similar to BFG KO2. It has 3 ribs in the middle which are wrapped around each other, and they create a web of groove which doesn’t allow mud to leave that easily. Similarly on rocky terrains where durability counts as one of the main factors, the Grabber ATX provides weaker sidewalls. Although both tires have 2 ply polyester casing and 2 running steel belts on top, reinforced with 2 layers of nylon. The Falken Wildpeak AT3w provides you with 2 more layers of polyamide running around the tire’s rim, so you actually get 4-layer sidewall construction compared to just 2ply on grabber ATX. Furthermore, the Falken Wildpeak features thicker sidewall lugs, which grab and pull more efficiently during flexing, when you air down the tire to lower PSI values. Moreover, all its shoulder blocks are also aggressive and provide better lateral traction in comparison, as they are equipped with notches and ramps on one side and saw tooth edges on the other, where each block is serrated on itself. These bite into the surface with more force and provide superior gripping power, comparatively. General Grabber ATX only lacks because of its shoulder blocks, and although they are staggered, they don’t provide enough features, so the tire lacks a lot in the lateral traction. And although Grabber ATX still does great in dry conditions, providing you with good enough handling times and braking distances, on wet roads, the lateral traction component really affects its performance, and so the tire cannot outperform its competitor. Falken Wildpeak basically provides you with dual siping design where the summer sipes in the middle provide ample dry traction and the interlocking sipes on the shoulder blocks deals well with wet conditions. On wet roads, two things are the most significant, one has to do with sipes, and the other, with the tread’s flexibility. And Falken gives you both. Its tread is very soft and gives all its sipes flexibility to stretch and squeeze, and this way they suck in the water particles underneath much more effectively and spray it out as the tire rolls over. With deeper tread voids the tire is also great at evacuating water at a faster rate, and so it shows superior hydroplaning resistance as well, which further increases its wet traction capabilities. That’s because with faster water evacuation, the sipes don’t have to do too much work. But with a softer rubber composition, the Falken Wildpeak has to compromise a little in the tread wear department, though it still is not too bad as it’s deeper tread takes a while to burn off. The General Grabber ATx on the other hand, is one of the best tires that you can get when it comes to wear. Its stiffer compound offers a good Kevlar composition which helps it last a long time, while the full depth notches and siping ensures that the tire does not limit Its traction values with wear. The tire also surprises a lot on snowy terrains. And although both tires are 3 peak mountain snowflakes rated, the General Grabber comes out superior in almost all performance scenarios. Furthermore, if needed there is an option to add studs on this tire, which can significantly improve traction on icy terrains. Thanks for watching. Subscribe for more.
