Both Falken Wildpeak AT3W & the Toyo Open Country AT3 are the companies flagship All Terrain tires. When it comes to Falken Wildpeak, the company's three main objectives were winter, wear and wet performance. That's why they named this tire the 3 W. So, was Falken able to achieve that? Well, the key lies in their designs. With the tire's optimized shoulders blocks, Falken Wildpeak AT3w creates a very biting zig zag longitudinal grooves that separates the tires central area. The tire has 2 differently shaped shoulder blocks with varying widths but similar 3d siping. On the inner side, one of them has stepped edges to it, while the other is notched with a deep cut. The tires outer sides are also very aggressive, where the stepped edges are very prominent. That's why this tire has fewer handling times, both in wet and dry conditions than the Toyo Open Country AT3. So, why Toyo AT3 is lacking behind here? Well...When it comes to cornering, the tire's sides come in to play. So here the Toyo AT3 overall has less aggressive shoulders. But still, the tire showed a better grip on dry roads. The tire simply has more compact blocks now, and together they provide more contact with the ground. This results in shorter braking distances when compared to Falken Wildpeak AT3w. In the middle, the Toyo AT3 features prominent S shaped blocks which show sharp edges and are further surrounded by others with incisions in them and they face in all directions allowing this tire to hug the surface its on firmly. Here, the Falken Wildpeak also has the same kind of thing going on for it, as it has a Z shaped block, surrounded by others, in a similar manner. And even with more compact blocks in Toyo AT3, the tire isn’t able to perform better on wet roads compared to Wildpeak. The Wildpeak having sharp edges and side stairs to its central blocks from a wider groove pattern while still keeping its traction on roads, especially on wet ones. It also has a lot of tread depth to it as well. (Almost 1.6 mm more on average then Toyo AT3. So, with WIDER and DEEPER block valleys, the Falken Wildpeak is also able to evacuate more volume of mud and snow in comparison. While the sharp stepped blocks with deep siping latch on to the surface it’s on.Similarly, on rocks, the tire aggressive shoulders give more grip in comparison forming better lateral traction than the Toyo AT3. This means that while climbing on rocks, The Falken Wildpeak is less prone to skid sideways. Other than this… Both tires are 3 peak mountain snowflakes rated, here the Toyo AT3 with its 3d wave like siping and compact but sharp-edged blocks give greater bite compared to Wildpeak. So overall performance on snow is seen better on Toyo Open Country AT3. Looks like Toyo also has a win here… So, which tire to get? Well, if we talk about the Toyo AT3, the tire was overall better on roads. And on the other side, off road performance of Falken Wildpeak AT3w was better in all terrains except for snow.
