This year, we lost the great entertainer, activist and human being Harry Belafonte. Much has been made of his contributions to music, acting and his work in the Civil Rights Movement. But, not as much as been made of his effort to push Hip-Hop out wide - in Hollywood. "Beat Street" dropped 39 years ago and it represented a number of things. First of all, it was one of the first movies to highlight Hip-Hop in an authentic manner from a New York perspective (specifically The Bronx). With Mr. B as the producer, he made sure everything was done right. To this day, actors and performers get royalty checks. The movie produced a number of stars, both Hip-Hop and acting. MC Debbie D and dance wizard Mr. Wave (of the infamous New York City Breakers) were two of the greats to emerge of of the movie. In honor of the late, great Harry Belafonte, Chuck "Jigsaw" Creekmur pulled together the two "Beat Street" alumni to discuss the seminal movie and the impact of the great man that waved a flag in the name of the culture.
