When I was in 8th standard I cooked a dish for the first time on my own. A very good friend of mine used to bring a kurma-type potato dish and chapati for lunch. I loved the taste and asked her mom for the recipe and tried it at home. Those days, we don't eat much onion/garlic at home. So when amma was not at home, I cooked the dish with some assistance from my paati | grandmother.
This potato paal kootu is the first dish I cooked on my own. My paati loved it and it tasted closer to the one, which my friend used to bring. That's how I got more interest in cooking.
This is a popular recipe in South Indian Tamil weddings. They usually serve as an accompaniment for biryani or as a side for poori in the reception.

2 cups boiled and cubed potatoes
¼ cup peas
3 tsp oil
1 bay leaf
1 finely chopped onion
1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
½ portion tomato
Few curry leaves
2 slit green chili
1 cup water
Salt as needed
Few coriander leaves
To grind
¼ cup coconut
1 tsp fennel seeds
7-10 cashew nuts
1 green chili
¼ cup water
