financial management picking up today
0:13
first one in a while we said we had more
0:15
good news now this is if people are with
0:18
the new Valencia region in Spain right
0:19
it is just how these work because the
0:22
autonomous is delightful news you can't
0:24
wait to pass it on because the way
0:26
things work is we know in Spain it's um
0:27
within each autonomous region they can
0:30
do their own thing on some things and
0:32
this is one of them yeah what you have
0:34
in Spain is you have National Tax so
0:36
that's the base like income tax and then
0:38
regions can add their own on and they
0:41
can decide what they do with wealth tax
0:44
uh succession tax which we know is
0:46
inheritance tax and what happened is we
0:49
know we had a change in government in
0:51
the Valencia region we got rid of the
0:54
Socialists and so
0:58
um what that part of their Manifesto is
1:00
that they were going to reduce taxes
1:02
where they could so on the 21st of July
1:05
the Valencia government made a very very
1:07
bold move and it approved to suppress
1:10
inheritance tax in the Valencia region
1:13
uh go and they've backdated it to the
1:16
28th of May 23 so since then there's
1:20
been no inheritance tax to be payable
1:24
from people to either their children or
1:29
their spouses so in Spain the under
1:31
inherited sex rules you have four groups
1:33
of people right group one is children
1:37
grandchildren adopted children under 21.
1:40
they always got the most allowance group
1:41
two is children and adopted children
1:44
over 21 grandparents and spouses group
1:47
three is brothers sisters aunts and
1:51
uncles and group four is non-related
1:54
people cousins
1:56
Etc so for groups one and two so that's
1:59
for children spouses and obviously if
2:01
you leave money to your parents their
2:04
inheritance tax now has been suppressed
2:06
and that makes a huge difference before
2:09
in the Valencia region spouse to spouse
2:11
you only got a hundred thousand Euros
2:13
allowance before you had to pay
2:15
inheritance tax
2:17
and for most people if their properties
2:19
were worth five hundred thousand in
2:20
joint names
2:22
obviously you were over that hundred
2:24
thousand threshold and this doesn't just
2:27
apply to beneficiaries who live in the
2:29
EU
2:31
it applies to beneficiaries no matter
2:33
where they are in the world so it also
2:35
applies to non-eu countries so that's
2:37
countries like the US Canada Australia
2:39
UK so if you have assets and you live in
2:42
the Valencia regions you're a tax
2:44
resident here you die and you leave your
2:46
assets to one anyone in group one or two
2:49
no matter where they are in the world
2:51
they don't pay inheritance tax
2:54
wow okay so no no not a limit on it it's
2:58
just there's none at all yep and it's a
3:01
huge huge huge difference we used to
3:03
have a 99 it's basically a 99 discount
3:05
and then that went down to 25 then it
3:07
went down and 50 and the old socialist
3:10
government said they were going to get
3:11
the allowance down even more Charlie 25
3:13
discount or zero the other government
3:16
has come in now and said no why can't
3:19
people leave what they've worked so hard
3:21
for to their children now group three
3:22
which is brother sisters aunts and
3:25
uncles isn't included in this however it
3:27
is expected that they will include this
3:30
group within the next year or so it
3:32
could be sooner than that now group four
3:34
I'm afraid if you're not married you
3:37
fall into group four if you're not
3:39
related to someone leaving the money you
3:41
fall into group four or if you're a
3:42
distant family relative you fall into
3:45
group four and therefore you have to pay
3:47
the full brunt of inheritance tax as per
3:50
the national rules there's no discount
3:51
and it's horrendous so if you are not
3:56
married and you do actually want to
3:59
leave your partner something and avoid
4:00
inheritance tax if it's gonna you know
4:02
you need to consider possibly getting
4:06
married
4:07
um and if you have got money to leave
4:10
and you don't want to pay inheritance
4:12
tax obviously leave it to Children if
4:15
you then want it to go on to other
4:18
family members maybe you can put
4:19
something in writing saying that they
4:21
give something to other family members
4:22
remember if they live in the UK and
4:25
they've got money they gift it to
4:26
someone they have to live for seven
4:27
years otherwise that person will pay tax
4:29
so there are ways around it but it is a
4:32
huge huge move forward and a very very
4:34
bold move and they also did say that
4:37
they would look at wealth tax because
4:38
wealth tax again is is her is is
4:42
it can amount to a lot of money each
4:45
year even if your assets aren't that big
4:47
say you've got a house and it's
4:49
increased in value you know you charge
4:52
wolf tax and some people are asset rich
4:54
and cash poor and it can have a huge
4:57
effect on them so they're looking at
4:58
wealth tax as well but for now Valencia
5:01
region has come in line with other
5:03
regions like Madrid Barcelona Murcia and
5:07
the lyrics have done it as well
5:09
um in the groups one and two inheritance
5:13
tax has all but gone okay so people that
5:17
were getting elderly and we're thinking
5:19
of selling their house and they want you
5:21
to downsize but for all no because of
5:23
the inheritance implications and we're
5:25
going into rented accommodation you can
5:27
sell your big house now you can buy
5:29
yourself a smaller house at the moment
5:31
with no inheritance tax liabilities for
5:33
your children and then you can invest
5:36
the rest to give you an income obviously
5:38
this remains in place as long as this
5:40
government remains in place but
5:42
hopefully if they make many more
5:44
positive tax moves people will vote to
5:46
keep them in place
5:48
um if you look to what the Spanish
5:49
people said prior to the election they
5:51
were fed up being taxed to the hilt
5:54
um they were fed up with the family
5:57
values being attacked because in Spain
5:59
obviously the value of the family very
6:00
highly and they were attacking family
6:03
values and so the Spanish people
6:05
actually did something about it
6:08
um they actually said look enough is
6:09
enough we're going to change this so no
6:12
central government
6:13
is still a bit of a mess but Regional
6:15
governments seem to have their act in
6:17
order at the moment we've had change in
6:19
local governments in lots of
6:21
towns and cities as well and let's see
6:24
if they do some positive stuff as well
6:25
but that is absolutely brilliant for
6:27
everyone out there and you know if
6:29
anyone says to you it only applies to
6:30
people that live in the EU that is
6:33
incorrect it is across the board so if
6:35
you live in Spain and you leave your
6:37
money to the UK to someone in Australia
6:39
someone in Canada I don't know someone
6:42
in Indonesia Thailand wherever okay I'm
6:46
still subject to the same rules as if
6:47
they lived in Spain wow okay and it
6:50
always seemed to be here I've said every
6:52
time it's the old inheritance tax it's
6:54
it's a rotten humbug tax that because
6:56
it's you know it's their money it's
6:57
their house
6:58
but if you look at the UK the amount of
7:01
extra I think I couldn't remember if it
7:03
was the first three months of this year
7:05
they bought in something an extra 5
7:06
billion in inheritance tax in the UK
7:08
because in the UK spouse's spouse is
7:12
free but then you leave it to anyone
7:13
else it's not and if you go over your
7:16
allowance it's taxed at 40 and for most
7:19
people their houses are over that
7:20
allowance so it gives them no leeway to
7:23
leave anything else so in the UK you do
7:25
need to look at trusts Etc to alleviate
7:27
inheritance tax obviously trusts are not
7:29
acceptable anywhere in Europe or France
7:31
Spain they don't accept trust but this
7:34
just means in the Valencia region at the
7:36
moment people can breathe a little bit
7:38
easier I think even I was worried I was
7:40
saying to my husband if something
7:41
happens to you and me you know our
7:43
daughter we left the house this that and
7:45
the other she can't afford to pay the
7:46
inheritance tax on it no that was
7:48
something yeah yeah it was always a
7:50
worry at the back of everyone's mind so
7:52
that is you know it is a huge bit of
7:55
good news and I think people should be
7:57
very pleased with it and you should keep
8:01
an eye on what the government in
8:02
Valencia is doing and I know expats we
8:04
tend not to vote in elections but you
8:07
can vote in Spain and if you want things
8:09
like this to happen and a party is doing
8:12
it for you will come the next elections
8:14
please go out there and vote and keep
8:16
them in power because otherwise if
8:18
there's a power shift and it goes back
8:20
to the Socialists they will scrap all
8:22
these things and they will bring back
8:24
taxes that maybe are not for your
8:27
benefit so please just don't sit on your
8:29
Laurel sink or things have changed if
8:31
there is a next election and you're
8:32
happy with what's going on go out there
8:34
and vote yeah you need to get rid of the
8:36
party that's making your life better
8:38
make sure you're registered in time
8:39
because it's quite a way ahead of the
8:40
election you need to be having things in
8:42
place here's the thing you're talking
8:43
about the groups um that that will
8:45
affect so if in group four there
8:47
um so get married or pay the inheritance
8:49
tax
8:50
that's a tough one ask me an easier
8:52
question I've had quite a few people get
8:54
married you know they're they're getting
8:56
on in life they've been together a long
8:57
long time they're as good as married I
8:59
suppose
9:01
everyone got married
9:02
um you know if you've been with your
9:03
partner 20 30 years what's the
9:06
difference a bit of paper is going to
9:07
make apart from save you a hell of a lot
9:08
in tax and if you want your partner to
9:11
be secure if anything happens to you why
9:13
not do it you know why not look after
9:16
them why not think of them
9:18
um so that's something people do need to
9:20
consider as I said you know it's been a
9:23
huge change it wasn't expected it was a
9:25
very very bold move and I applaud them
9:28
for it because they said they were going
9:29
to do things like this and lots of
9:31
parties they say they're going to do
9:33
things and they don't this is one party
9:36
that is actually following through so
9:38
let's see how far they go listening and
9:41
exceeding expectations for over 31 years
