Come with me as I check out the city and enjoy some local Omani food in Sur, Oman! Sur is an historical seaport on Oman’s eastern tip. It lies roughly 93 miles southeast of Muscat. It has a long history with sailors and is also known for its shipbuilding. As early as the 6th century, Sur was an essential center for trade with East Africa. The wooden ships built there traveled as far as China and were even used for pearl fishing. But before checking out the sites, my guides Ahmed and Ameer from Oman Travel took me to get a taste of Sur’s famous Omani seafood! We’d be eating at Al Hawash Restaurant. It had a beautiful interior, like a traditional Omani house. There were Omani flags and pictures of the sultan hanging from the ceiling. On the right were cases of fresh fish and lobster. In the kitchen, I saw them baking lobster, fish, calamari, and mussels. I was so excited to try them all! Elsewhere, they had some tuna coated in Omani spices, which they fried! Then, I watched them filet a kingfish. The cook de-scaled it, gutted it, butterflied it, and coated it in a masala. Then, I watched them grill some chicken kebabs, cook some pressure-cooked lamb, and more. We had a whole platter of seafood! We decided to eat it on the terrace. We had lobster, shrimp, calamari, mussels, kingfish, grouper, four rice dishes, and two salads. The lobster was stuffed with cheese and had a bit of spice to it. I also loved the masala on the calamari! The mussels also contained the Omani masalas. They were meaty and so creamy!
